“A second great stay at the Astypalaia Palace”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

My family and I spent a week this summer at the Astypalaia Palace and it was just as enjoyable as the week we spent the prior year. Mike Vergoulis and his family provide a great atmosphere where there is personal and customized service including airport pick-up. The pure white hotel perched on a slight hill up a five minute walk from the windmills at the town center is a jewel of design, with even a tiny pool overlooking the spectacular hillside village of Chora, whose patchwork of small structures seems to sparkle and change shades as the sun moves along its path. The short walk allows you to be in the lively village in no time, with its restaurants and shops. On a practical side, we chose the same spacious dupleix for the three of us, allowing our teenage daughter to have her own studio, complete with kitchen with utensils and plates and glassware. You certainly don't have to cook breakfast at least as the family-made buffet breakfast is a delight (including delicious homemade cake each day), whether you take it inside or outside on the terrace, assuming the wind is tame. Our dupleix came with a fabulous terrace overlooking everything, including the town and the harbor, and featured a Jacuzzi which was new this year. We also like the furnishings and the standards of cleanliness throughout. In short, a sure bet in a terrific place.

Room Tip: The dupleixes have great terraces.

let's list:
breakfast was excellent and seemed very fresh each day-
staff (small) was just as sweet as can be -
view was stunning -
weather (not actually to their credit) was perfect both days -

only small thing, towels pretty worn - but not much of a problem when you're smiling about everything else

The view from the hotel and the room was awesome, however, we couldn't enjoy the tiny balcony not even for 5 minutes, during the five days we stayed there, because of the wind. So, we had to go out all the time, since if we didn't, we 'd be indoors with the windows closed. Breakfast was tasty, almost the same every day. We are afraid that the photo on the website is rather misleading...pool may be cute, but very small and not a swimming pool really ... It is an expensive hotel in comparison to others on the island, but, actually there was nothing exceptional. We hired a car from the hotel owners at 25 euros per day; car was new, small and nice, nevertheless not the one which can be used on some of the difficult island's roads leading to beaches... there was no choice of the car anyway.

My family and I visited Astypalaia a few weeks ago and absolutely LOVED the island AND Astypalaia Hotel Palace. Astypalaia Palace fits the mood of the island - welcoming, hospitable, warm, down to earth and memorable. Astypalaia Palace isn't about glitz and glamor (that would be contradictory to the general mood of Astypalaia). With nice rooms, Astypalaia Palace is about making you feel like family and making you feel like home. During our trip to Greece, my wife and I spent a good amount of time in Athens, Santorini, Nafplio and Crete... while we enjoyed our trip overall, it's Astypalaia that we frequently reminisce about. The owner (Mike) and his sister (Maria) were a huge part of the reason why we're planning a trip back to the island. They were extremely helpful, caring and went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our time there. From the time Mike met us at the airport, we felt comfortable and in good hands. They take customer service to the next level - the island of Astypalaia is like one big family. Mike and Maria make sure that you instantly become a part of it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room where you have a view of hora

This was our first visit to Astypalaia (and won't be our last). We were met at the airport by Mike, the owners' son, who pointed out various beaches on the drive to the hotel. Mike's sister, Maria, was the receptionist at the hotel and both Mike and Maria were extremely friendly and helpful. We were allocated room number 1 which was on the top (second) floor. The room was traditionally furnished and had a kitchenette, sitting area and four poster bed. The balcony was huge with a wicker sofa and two chairs, a jacuzzi and a wonderful view of the castle. We had the use of a lap top with free wi-fi for the duration of our stay. Breakfast was served in an area next to reception, with indoor and outdoor seating. As the hotel only has nine rooms the choice of food was not extensive but there was always bread, yogurt, jams, cheese, ham, some form of eggs, cake, cereal and each day a different homemade treat, eg cheese pies, apple cake, squares of pizza, etc. There is a plunge pool with sunbeds at the hotel but we spent most of our holiday on the beach. Livadi beach is a 10/15 minute walk away but we hired a car (very reasonable at only 20 euros a day) and ventured to other beaches on the island. The town square is only a couple of minutes walk from the hotel where there are several tavernas and cafés. You can also walk down the hill to the harbour where there are shops and more tavernas. A walk up to the castle is a must, with spectacular views over Livadi and Skala. We have visited many Greek islands over the past 25 years and Astypalaia is definitely the most picturesque and quiet.

having stayed on 8 of the dodecanese islands in some wonderful locations and amazing hotels, first impressions upon our arrival at the palace....we were a little disappointed.
the palace hotel is fairly new & the rooms were of a high standard.
the location is close to the chora(about 2mins walk).
it is a good 10 mins walk from the harbour/beach.
we did find this a little bit misleading from the photo's on their website.
i had to take the 'infinity' pool picture with the camera on the floor!
quite an expensive hotel in comparison to others in the area, but despite the quality and high standards of the hotel, their was nothing exceptional.
we would love to visit Astypalia again, but would we stay at the Palace again, not sure?
