My wife and I stayed in the Porto Scoutari for 12 nights in September 2004. When I read the other reviews on this site I was amazed by the variation in reviewers findings - it was either "heaven on earth" or awful, with no response in between! You can only speak as you find of course, but our experience fell someway between the extremes.
We certainly had no problem with cleanliness of our room or changing of linen etc. Also, for us the location was fine. It was 10-15 minutes walk into town during the day (not recommended at night) and the same to the nearest beach. At night or when we didn't want to walk, getting a taxi was easy if you asked at reception. The only time we had any problem was when three cruise ships were in the harbour at the same time and monopolised the local transport - that night the owner took us into town herself!!
The public rooms, grounds and pool are impressive and we never found the pool area full of loud people, English or otherwise. Though it has to be said that we only stayed in the hotel all day on one occasion, tending to spend most days "out and about" and return to the pool in the late afternoon/early evening.
The first room we had was a disappointment after the build-up the hotel had had in our holiday company's brochure (not the hotel's fault of course) and the hotel's web site. It was a decent size and had all the facilities promised, but was neither luxurious nor romantic. The worst thing though was that it had a connecting door to the next room and we could hear everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) that the couple next did and said - I am sure that they felt the same about us. We stuck it for a couple of nights but then asked for a change. The hotel responded quickly and offered a move to a more private room of the same standard or, for a fee, an upgrade to a suite. The first room offered was much more in line with our expectations, though in the end, we opted for the upgrade. The suite we had was beautiful - very large and well equipped and furnished, though strangely had a smaller bathroom than the first room! However, even in this room we did have some noise from adjacent rooms and the room above and I don't think the neighbours were doing anything unreasonable.
The breakfasts provided were very good compared to other Greek Hotels we have stayed at (we are up to fifteen islands and counting), but the bar seemed to keep to UK licensing laws and was often closed when we returned from our evening meal - very "un-Greek"!
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Porto Scoutari and found it to be "above average" for the small island hotels we have stayed in. In this assessment I have taken into account that, by the time we had paid the upgrade fee, it was the most expensive hotel we have stayed in in Greece.
