What do you expect from a Greek hotel? This place is clean (cleaners in every day bar Sunday), the Studio (31) is of a really good size with a more than acceptable bathroom and a terrace that two people can comfortably sit on (with a table and umbrella) and admire the lovely views down to Pedi and its bay. Very quiet (with the exception of a couple of cockrels and a braying mule in the morning) Not far from the bus down to Pedi or Yialos and three fine restaurants just 5 minutes away at the top of the Kali Strata. Can't say anything about the breakfast as we were self catering. We've done lots of self catering packages in Greece and all we want is somewhere clean, comfortable to sleep in ( a real double bed not 2 singles pushed together!) and quiet. We spend most of the day out and about. On those three counts this is one oft the best we've stopped in.

Room Tip: Ours was on the ground floor and we still had a great view from the patio.

I have stayed at Taxiarchis for many years. The family who own the apartments are the most friendly and helpful people you could wish for. We would obviously not return if our stay wasn't extremely enjoyable and pleasant. The rooms are clean and all you could want or need for a beautiful holiday. I can't understand about some comments about the noise of the chickens, donkey etc. Surely that is better than disco, motorbikes, drunken revellers etc until all hours!!! As for the terrain - get yourselves fitter by walking - or if you can't, there is a reliable bus every 30 mins from near the hotel, or even a taxi. We choose to walk most of the time as you will always see different things to see and photograph every day. If you are unable to self-cater on two electric rings with two saucepans and a frying pan, then you should go all inclusive!! Did the previous reviewer research the holiday? If not, surely its not the fault of Taxiarchis or Symi if the client dislikes everything?

My wife and I have returned to Symi and these apartments on 31 occasions in the last 16 years, that probably tells you something!

Over that period we have become very good friends with Frank, Eva, Rula, Ike, Gorgios and Fransesca and received nothing but the best of hospitality and friendship on every occasion.

Although the island of Symi does stir early, first by the cockerel waking the dog that then wakens snooze button alarm clock that is the donkey, these are sounds that almost make me think of the character of centuries ago. Whilst we can accept that all are different, we find these natural sounds as having no negative impact on this isle and all it's wondrous beauty! I suppose it could be argued that the removal of the sound of the donkey would ease the dawn chorus but in so doing, would result in the removal of the only artery of transport to areas of the upper town, remote churches etc, etc, totally in-accessible by any form of motorised transport.

Removal of chickens from the dawn chorus would also result in no bolied eggs, or at least, even more expense!

Whilst we can also concede that the island and lifestyle may not be to everyone's taste, we can honestly say that we have only ever witnessed negative views on two previous occasions that both involved couples. In one case one of the wives was looking for a Macdonald's (not on Symi!) and in the other the wife in her 6" stilettos was looking for a night club, something not overly catered for then and not catered for at all now.
Symi is a traditional Greek Island in every way and although my wife and I have witnessed slight changes during our visits, these have been very well managed and any changes almost imperceptible.

There are two sandy beaches on Symi, St Nicholas and St Marina, both accessible on foot although these are not pavements! I regularly walk to St Nicholas in nothing more than a pair of Clarke's sandals that use magnetic attraction clips as the fastenings and find it totally acceptable.

Symi can get very hot as a Greek island and the temperatures are made very clear in any brochure I have ever read.

Our experience of this island that is paradise and more specifically these Taxiarchis Hotel Apartment Rooms on Chorio Hill, that have been our ideal home on every occasion have been exceptional and we wish to offer our huge thanks to you Frank and your wonderful family for your huge part in this.

My wife and I would advocate a stay here anytime for anyone looking for a traditional Greek Holiday.......................... Oh, and did we mention Paradise!

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent but 28 is our favourite!

I share the view of most contributors that these apartments are kept clean and tidy; it is quite impressive that the linen and towels are changed daily. Frank and his staff are generally very friendly and helpful.

We booked this accommodation as part of a self-catering package thru' Olympic Holidays but I failed to see how the provision of a double hob, a kettle and two cooking pots actually enabled any serious attempt to self-cater.

This lack of facility necessitated that virtually all eating, other than breakfast, needed to be done away from the apartment. We did not have the views that other reviewers have referred to, so meals on our balcony were not really an option anyway.

The sleep quality here is one of the worst I have experienced on a holiday. At 4.00am every day we were treated to a chorus of cockerels, dogs barking and a donkey sounding-off. This kept going until the sun rose about 3 hours later.

Once you have walked up and down the hill from Chorio to Symi Harbour or Pedi Bay a few times you will soon realise that the only practical way to make it to one of the six beaches on the island is by taxi boat at a cost of between €5 to €12 for the return trip per person. Some did attempt the walk across crumbling, hilly and dangerous terrain in flip-flops or sandals but, in the mid-day sun, I considered them to be unwise.

When you do reach you intended location you will not find sandy beaches, so take your beach shoes and be prepared to pay €3 to €4 for your sunbed. All beaches are serviced by a sole taverna.

I hear the chorus of regular visitors "Well, that's the way it is on the Greek Islands". At €70 per night per room (plus optional air conditioning at €7 per day), I simply ask "Why?"

Although the quality of restaurant food here is excellent, anybody who hasn't visited the Island of Symi or Rhodes recently will soon discover that eating out is no longer an inexpensive experience.

We found that the daily routine of walking down the hill to the taxi boat, renting your sun-bed, having some lunch at the taverna, returning by said boat, walking back up the hill before freshening-up prior to eating out again to be boring and expensive.

In addition to your accommodation, air conditioning and/or package costs, be ready to set aside about €50 per person per day for the other expenses I have referred to.

I appreciate that this review highlights perceived inadequacies of the location as much as it does the accommodation itself but, putting it in context, I would not come back. If this is what we should expect from a holiday on a Greek Island, as some have suggested (and I have been to others), then I doubt that we shall try another in the near future.

Last minute booking for 1 night. We booked one of the maisonette-style rooms (very spacious) where the double bed is upstairs and two sofa beds are downstairs in the living area. Impeccably clean throughout and rooms set in lovely gardens. Breakfast is served on a beautiful balcony overlooking Pedi Beach and the view is stunning. While breakfast is not buffet style, I thought that it was excellent - fresh bread, tomatoes, ham & cheese, boiled eggs, yoghurt with honey, tea and coffee. I actually preferred this as it meant that refrigerated foods were really cold when served and likewise eggs were boiled to order. Lovely well-maintained family property - would definitely return.

We stayed at the Taxiarchis in August and travelled with Olympic holidays. I have to say that we booked late and therefore did not pay the full package price so please bear that in mind when you read the review. The apartments are located in Chorio on the side of the town which overlooks Pedi Bay. To reach the harbour you have to walk to the other side of Chorio which looks over the harbour. Symi is very hilly with slopes or many steps. If you stay at the Taxiarchis you will have to walk up or down the a small slope to get to the bus stop. There are beautiful views over to Pedi but not all the rooms have views. The apartments are on the top floor and studios below and some of the studios look out onto trees and hillside. We had a studio which did not have a view other than trees. The studio itself was of a good size with a double bed, small table, dressing table and a sofa. The bathroom was quite small with a hand held shower. There was a small patio in front of the room with table and 2 chairs. The rooms are kept immaculately clean with the bedding and towels changed every day (except Sunday) and the linen was pristine. The small kitchen area (just a sink and draining board with cupboards underneath and a 2 ring cooker) does not have a lot of cooking equipment. I would think a frying pan would have been useful but there were only 2 saucepans. There is an electric kettle and a decent sized fridge. The apartments have a small terrace with a fantastic view over Pedi Bay where you can get a breakfast or a drink. The rooms have air con but you have to pay locally to use it.
You can walk down to Pedi bay from the Taxiarchis in about 30 minutes, it's a bit of a drag back up hill but you can catch the bus which runs frequently until 11.00 p.m. and costs E1.50. There are 3 supermarkets close to the apartments and 2 bakers and a butcher in Chorio if you are self catering.
There are 5 restaurants in Chorio: Windmill, Zoe's, George and Marias, Sylligos and Olive Tree (which only opens during the day). There is a small Giros/Grill shop. There are a number of bars in Chorio. For a bigger selection you need to go down to the Harbour where you will be spoilt for choice. Half way between the two there is a restaurant called Herotomeni with fabulous views over the whole area and good food (ask for directions).
All in all the accommodation is very good - but not so good that I would have been prepared to pay the full rate for it.

Room Tip: Most rooms do not have natural shade (22 and 23 do) the others have umberellas. But rooms with shad...

Lovely place, far enough away from the crowds (!) of Symi to be peaceful and an easy walk down to the port, with an quick bus ride back up. Frank has GREAT restaurant recommendations in Chorio (do NOT miss these) and at the port, speaks flawless English and was incredibly helpful. Our apartment was clean, linens fresh, and perfectly set up for two moms and two daughters.

Would love to go back!
