Ranked #203 of 592 Restaurants in Cephalonia
Price range: US$6 - US$34
Description: Petrangelos and his family welcome you to Maklithari Taverna in the village of Makriotika near Agia Efimia (5kms).Known as the balcony of Pylaros, Makriotika nestles on the lower slopes of Mount Agia Dinati and is a small authentic traditional Greek working village. With outside tables and amazing views Maklithari is the perfect location for a relaxed evening meal as well as celebrations, anniversaries, wedding party groups and family get-togethers; it is not surprising the Maklithari is where the locals eat all year round.

We saw the adverts on trees and telegraph poles and, as we had car hire, thought we would give it a try and are we glad we did! The gentleman that took us to our table valiantly batted away the wasps, which disappeared as soon as the sun went down, whilst we enjoyed the most delicious meal. We shared a rigananda (oasted bread with the best feta we have ever tasted together with tomatoes). I had the moussaka which was light (rare for this dish) and flavoursome with quality meat. It also came with a lovely tomato and cucumber side salad. My husband had the slow roasted lamb (a bit too rustic for me as I don't like bones) but he said it was delicious. Then came the complimentary yoghurt (again, so fresh I have never had anything like it) with peaches and a peach compote. Sorry to wax lyrical but it was an amazing meal with fantastic views of Agia Efimia. Parking is slightly tricky on the narrow road, but it is well worth a visit. The "bat" bar next door looks intriguing too - next year!

We stayed in the village of Makriotika for ten days and ate at Maklithari on three nights due to the convenience of the location. The owners/staff are very friendly and helpful, the location, which is on the village square overlooking the mountains and sea towards Agia Effimia, is gorgeous, and the food is delicious. We tried quite a few things on the menu, and were never disappointed. The spit roast pork was a particular favourite! On a fourth evening, the lady who we had rented the villa from cooked a main course for us, so we took a couple of containers up to the taverna and they were more than happy to fill them with Greek salad and tzatziki as take-away, to accompany our meal. The price of our meals were very reasonable.

Great food, would definitely recommend!

We were staying in Agia Efimia and looking for local greek village tavernas so when we saw this we thought we had hit the jackpot. The village is 5 mins by car from AE but a long hours walk if you don't have a car, or a taxi ride. It is a small taverna with a few tables by the taverna building and most of the tables are set across the road in the village square. It is a beautiful setting and I would recommend trying it for the different atmosphere, but our experience was a little disappointing after looking forward to it so much. Friday and Saturday there special it spit roast meats and this is what we had been looking forward to.
We ordered Tzaziki which was obviously home made because there was just too much garlic in it. It was so garlicky that it was spicey and on the edge of not being eatable, so not to our taste. The fried courgettes were tasty but limp, we like the deep fried ones that are crispy, so again not to our personal taste. Our main of spit roast pork was the most disappoint though, it was served on a platter (a half kilo for 2 cost 15 euro) but was mostly bone and fat and was luke warm, served with a small plate of chips which were again only luke warm. Probably because only one guy was serving, a young man who apparently was his son just stood about doing very little and then running into the street to play with the young children. A large mythos, litre of red wine and the meal described was 35.70.
If we had transport we would probably have tried the restaurant again, picking dishes that were cooked to order, but not worth the cost of a taxi and too far to walk back to. Opens evening only from 6 pm.

We have been holidaying in Kefalonia for the last 14 years and the last 10 of those in the village of Makriotika because that is where the Maklithari Taverna is situated.
It really is just a fantastic escape from the the tourist centres - traditional Greek food and hospitality is what it is all about - and such good value for money.
In fact it was one of the reasons for buying some land in the village and building our own villa!

If you want to go to an authentic Greek Taverna and be given the true Greek hospitality where you are treated as honoured guests and the owners are genuinely pleased to have your company then come to Maklithari Taverna the only taverna in the small village of Makriotika 10 minutes from Agia Efimia in Kefalonia. Petrangelos and his wife are so welcoming and can't do enough to make your visit memorable. And the true Greek fare is second to none. Weather you have the Dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) or Deep fried courgettes as starters or the wonderful home made mousaka or Char grilled belly of pork strips as a main course or anything else from the menu you can rest assured that it will be fresh, tasty and prepared to perfection. If you come on a Friday or Saturday you can sample the Spit roasted Pork, Chicken or Goat and be taken through to the kitchen to see it cooking. Come and see Petrangelos and his family, you won't regret it!
