“Definately not a 4* Hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2007

I have just come back and couldn't wait !
The hotel was passable i suppose.
The bar was a joke, there was only ever 1-2 staff on at any one time and you were limited to 2 drinks per person. The staff were very rude, especially to the children.
The food is predictable, no kids choice at all, whatever was left from lunch was served again at evening meal. It was bismall.
The location was very remote indeed, and if you don't like wasps then don't go her !!!! They are everywhere, they're on the food, around the food, around the pool. They are a nightmare, i was stung by one of the hornets which was huge.
The activities programme for daytime and evening is the same all the time with little variation and got boring.
The manager was a rude and ignorant man, not at all what you would expect.
The rooms are very basic and fortunately were cleaned everyday with fresh towels every second day.
The entertainments mananger was good, his name was Balou. He tried to liven things up as they went sour. Shame really as he is wasted here, the entertainment team are lazy, bone idle. They don't smile and don't befriend you at all and the dances were all the same moves. They are very basic dancers with little experience is this line of work i'm afraid.

I would recommend not to stay here at all and pay a bit extra a stay in the comfort of an Iberostar Hotel which would be far better as it would be money well spent. Here was overpriced and over rated as it is more like a 2 *. This hotel needs to be re-assessed as soon as possible.

Just returned from the Sunmarotel Ermones Beach, after a fabulous week, despite some trepidation after reading some recent negative reviews. The most important point about this hotel, which most complainers conveniently overlook, is the VALUE FOR MONEY aspect..... we paid £45 a night for myself, partner, little boy & baby - this, of course, included all food & drink....great value. The hotel is in a superb position, overlooking Ermones Beach, & the spacious though fairly basic rooms are well serviced by the cable wagon which runs from the hotel main area down to the beach, via the several rows of bungalows. The pool/bar/restaurant areas are all on the same level, & very spacious.... the food was good quality, varied & healthy, & there was none of the usual queueing in wait for a free table. The drinks, again, were good quality, with the bar staff being efficient, friendly & sensible regarding service to potential excessive drinkers.... the generally respectable clientele at the hotel were mainly of varied European origin, with, thankfully, little sign of the tattooed Brit brigade....... the hotel has several thoughtful "extras", like the little train that runs up & down the main entrance road at meal times, collecting diners en route, the kiddies play area & building, & the indoor pool & exercise room. I would recommend this hotel mostly to young families & couples, although the evening entertainment is rather long winded..... banish the bingo! There is little to do outside the hotel, but this is something that people are surely aware of before they book...... Ermones Beach is adequate, being mostly pebble, but there are superb beaches within a few minutes drive in either coastal direction - car hire is cheap & easy, as is the local driving. So, having been to some lovely hotels & resorts worldwide, we would be more than happy to return to the Sunmarotel....... ignore all the "nit-pickers" & have a fine time!

I recently travelled to corfu with my partner and young baby and assumed 4 star would be 4 star!

Good points:
great scenery
nice pool area

Bad points:
Very basic room
All inclusive was ok, in between meals if you felt peckish you were handed a flimsy stale sandwich from behind the bar.
Limited drinks, ok if you like orange squash with your vodka
very unreliable cable car
very rude daytime barman
wasps around the pool

It may sound like we had an awful holiday but we did actually have a great time. We hired a car and went for nice meals out most days. A car is a must really in this location if you like to venture out. Check out Easycar.com it only cost us £90 for the week.

Although this hotel is in a fantastic location, the accommodation doesn't live up to the photos you see on the web site. They are in run-down condition, certainly NOT 4* quality. A/C worked in our room - great - but we spoke to people who had none, and the weather was *HOT HOT HOT*. Where we stayed in a bungalow behind the hotel, you could hear kitchen fans and smell kitchen smells 24hrs a day, and the room smelled damp/musty when we arrived. Clean sheets and towels every day, though - 10/10 for that.

Our sea view was over the roofs of the bungalows below us - overgrown with weeds and covered with litter (including dirty nappies!) - and the trees between which we could just see the sea. Not even the pool!

The staff were a bit surly but we discovered they'd not been paid for a month, so we forgave them that. It's no way to run a business though, and I wouldn't return just because of the way the staff are treated there.

The food would have been OK if it had been hot. There wasn't much variety from meal to meal - breakfast always the same, repeated meals from lunch to dinner, repeats of dinner 3 days in a row for one example. And the food was cold unless you got to it just as it was brought out, so the heated trays were either not working or not being used. Unhygenic as well. Again, no 4* award from us.

The entertainment was patchy. The ents team did they're best, and they can't really be blamed, but there was bingo *every* night for 1hr+, and the "shows" were put on by 2 or 3 people each night. They tried hard but could have done with some outside help, especially on their night off which they all took together. Understaffed, and a bit amateurish I'm afraid. For 4* I expected better.

There is little else to do unless you drive or get a taxi - which is pretty expensive - so you're pretty much stuck with what you get.

All inclusive means almost All Inclusive. Ice cream between meals *not* included, for example, and the bar seemed to be run to prevent you from drinking too much! If you like a good drink of an evening, you'll be frustrated. Bar shut at 11pm, after which you can pay for drinks. "Mostly Inclusive" would be more accurate.

You can get to the beach by walking (it's quite a hike!) or by cable car. This is more like a lift, and although we didn't get stuck in it, we heard stories from other guests that it's very unreliable.

Finally we paid for an extension on our last day because it was a 14hr wait until we were picked up from the hotel to go to the airport. You can't book this extension until the AM of the final day (50 euros), and even then we had a call at midday - *VERY* rude to say get out of the room. Eventually explained we'd paid to stay, but to be *RUDE* like that was inexcusable.

It could be a great hotel - the location is fantastic - but needs a *LOT* of work. Fantastic pools (indoor not heated, tho, but that's no big deal), great scenery, and the hotel itself is nice enough.

Wouldn't go back. Ever.

At first when we saw the reviews posted earlier we were pretty scared..... But as soon as we arrived at the hotel we knew we made the right decision.
It was me and my girlfriends first holiday together and we werent sure what to expect, but it is great for couples.
The pool was clean and very big with spectacular views (especially at night), and the entertainment was "entertaining" to say the least!!!
They are definately not stingy on the drinks (just make sure you order b4 11pm)
The room was pretty basic and also came with the added bonus of a birds nest on our balcony, which we got used to pretty quick.
The food was different every night and had a wide variety of choices for everyone. (not just chips)....
DO NOT get car hire from hotel, just walk down the hill there is a place that rents cheap cars(much cheaper) and they were really nice..
Also after the hotel entertainment is finished, next door to the car hire place is a bar which is open VERY late and they pump you full of shots too....great fun!!!
The reps were all excellent and we got on with them all straight away. Balou is the craziest guy you will ever meet (in a good way) and Maxwell kept the music playing all day and night ( big up bruv)... Thanks to Amy and harriet and everyone else for making this our best holiday ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And we are definately gonna go back.

The only dissapointment was not seeing Balou do his fire show the night we left.

We reccomend this place to all, it truly has something for everyone.

We arrived at the hotel on the 29th June 2007 fearing the worst having read the reviews on here. This account is honest and i pull no punches.

The hotel is situated on the side of a cliff-face with spectacular views out to sea. The rooms are reached via a cable car which did tend to break down...3 times during our weeks stay, however it was only for an hour or so.

The reception staff are rude and abrupt as are the bar staff, however, we dug deeper and found that they hadnt been paid for 2 months so in turn developed a "couldnt give a toss" attitude.

The entertainment was basic but hillarious and the big bold bloke called balloo is just superb. However, dont tackle him to hard at football (everyday at 4pm on an astroturf pitch) as he does tend to roll about like a girl. We got on really well with the other reps, especially MAXWELL (told you id put your name in mate! - sorry we lost your football, my brand new champions league ball is behind the indoor pool wall..!)) who sadly is a southampton fan...but not everybody can be perfect!

On a more serious note, the entertainment team were superb and the hotel did exactly what it said on the tin. Maybe not 4 star but has something for everybody. Table tennis, tennis, indoor and outdoor pool, jacuzi, football, boules, volleyball...thats just naming a few!

The accomdation is clean and comfortable and linen/towels are changed daily. The one bad point is the air con - it doesnt go below 16 degrees and the rooms get VERY hot at night.

The pool is huge but very deep - approx 10 foot at the deep end but does shelf off into shallow water ideal for the kids. Dont leave your lnflatables at the pool over night as they tend to disapear!!!

The food was different every night and was cooked to a very good standard. Contrary to other reports they do not run out of chips!! Beer was really nice and not watered down and they are not shy with the spirit measurements!!!!

The beach is quite small and is shingly/sandy and suprisingly does not get busy at all. The water is warm and safe for children and a lifeguard is on duty from 10am onwards. As for the smelly stream in a previous post, its crystal clear and home to a large shoal of mullet and turtle which will happily feed on bread when thrown in - It doesnt smell in the slightest.

DO NOT BOOK YOUR CAR HIRE WITH THE HOTEL...!!!!!! They quoted 320 euros for 3 days for a jeep, down the bottom of the hotel is inter europe car hire. We got a fully insured jeep for 3 days for 140 euros, smaller cars are approx 70-80 euros for 3 days and the daily rates get cheaper the longer you hire for. We had the jeep for 3 days and a quad for 4 days. The quad was 20 euros, fully insured from the chap next door to the car hire company. We found driving around simple and hassle free.

We have travelled extensively and i have to say this was probably one of the best holidays we have had. Thanks to maxwell and balloo - you were a great laugh. We NEVER go back to a place we have visited before but this is one place we may well go back to.

Thanks for reading, i hope i've helped in someway.

We have just got back from this Hotel and had a fantastic time, we were a party of 2 adults and 3 kids. This has been the best holiday we have ever had. The food was good the kids were always found something to eat. The entertainment this was absolutely brilliant, water aerobics is a scream and a definate must for the ladies, evening entertainment was all homemade ie. the staff created it with very limited props etc. Kids were entertained for 4 hours a day morning and pm, which they enjoyed immensley, our eldest daughter wanted us to leave her there she was that upset about coming home.
All in all this was a good holiday the rooms decor was abit dated but the furniture was all new, we were told that it is up for modernisation at the end of the season. The pool was child friendly and was a proper pool which was cleaned. The staff were always friendly. You can catch a bus to corfu town every day throughout the day. We found that they didn't have a bureau de change on site nearest cash machine was at Aqualand 10 mins away by car or corfu town.
We would go back to this hotel today.
