“Stunning location, Lovely staff”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

We booked this hotel for a week at the end of June after reading reviews on line , and we were not disappointed. The hotel has a stunning location in a fairly quiet unspoilt bay. All rooms have great views from their balconies of Ithaca and Cephalonia, as well as the bay itself.
Having only 17 rooms the hotel never seems busy and there was always plenty of room around the pool and in the restaurants. School holidays are probably best avoided if you don't want too encounter noisy children at the poolside, as happened on our last day, when I think the holidays must have started in Germany.
The Restaurant has a fantastic setting alongside the pool and overlooks the bay. I had read that the prices were high, but 20 Euros for 3 courses didn't seem too bad. It's the wine,as usual, that bumps up the cost: between 18 and 22 euros a bottle. Local Tavernas offer the same local wines at 8 euros a litre! The food is also very good at the two nearest tavernas around the harbour, where service is prompt and very friendly. All waiters speaking very good English.

At the hotel itself, all the staff were very helpful and friendly especially the receptionists. The waiter at the restaurant, Tasos was a joy. Nothing seemed too much trouble and he was always extremely polite but with a light touch.
As for the food, its good rather than excellent, but better value and just as good food is available in the Tavernas. Would recommend it anytime, but go bait earlier, maybe mid May or early June to avoid the heat - it was over 30 degrees most days!

Room Tip: Top floor has the best views

Last January, i booked this hotel for my husband and myself as a special treat....so i was looking forward to our stay. When we arrived, the key was given to us and we went upstairs, no help with the suitcases, nothing. We had a nice room, but the airconditioner was not working and the temparture was getting close to 40 degrees.. My husband went downstaires and she told us that the man was coming tomorrow..
After a horrible hot night, they told us, that they had an other room for us after 12 o'clock.
The room smelled so bad of smokers, ( non smoking rooms?), the smell was on the covers from the bed, the curtains, the couch, everywhere!
We had to go down again. By this time the whole week was already spoiled.
They had no other room, just open de balcony doors...
When my husband asked for the manager, the lady behind the desk said: "manager?... I don't know who is the manager..."

We had enough.
Beside the hustle with the rooms( 219 euro per night), the prices they charge you for your
We decided to leave and look for another hotel.
The hotel is nice, but they seem to forget, that its clients work very hard for there money, and iT feels like a ripoff, when you are not allowed to watch the WC football in your won room, but only at the bar outside, so you have to order your drinks there.
It's pretentious, expensive !!

An interesting(!) road trip down the mountain to the bay reveals the most beautiful location. The hotel is ideally placed to benefit from the stunning views of Arkoudi, Ithaca and Cephalonia.

The hotel itself is stylish, well run and cleverly laid out; all rooms have a sea view. The view from the pool is stunning.

The prices are a bit high but, beers in the room were good value and the Greek Salad was good value and delicious. As others have mentioned, the tavernas scattered around the bay also offer really really good food.

My favourite things about this hotel though was the staff. They were lovely. Helpful, thoughtful, smiley and a pleasure to be around.

I would love to return. I hope the hotel continues to prosper. And yes, I would certainly recommend it.

The most recent review of this quality seaside bolthole makes you realise how carefully you need to choose to meet your own requirements. For example,Nidri is the "Benidorm" of Lefkada,so that is where you should select if you are looking for a busier, touristy base.Mikros Gialos provides a more personalised holiday with a small number of great value family run tavernas giving a good alternative to the superbly positioned outdoor hotel restaurant.Yes,it is quite expensive, but the well-cooked portions are huge and there is no problem with sharing! The same goes for a club sandwich lunch at the waters edge where it is not difficult to consume a bottle of the excellent local rose wine! Agree that Arriti went the extra mile servicewise but all the staff were quite happy to chat to us.The views are superb over the inlet and out to sea, and, if you fancy a closer look, hire a yacht for the day from nearby Sivota and the captain will take you "wherever you fancy"!It is well worth hiring a car as the interior of Lefkada has a charm of its own and it is an hour's easy drive from Preveza airport.Consider using Ionian & Aegean Island Holidays.Just remember that the Greek economy is really struggling and the workforce is suffering because of this. Also prices have gone up almost everywhere and you do need to do some research to benefit your holiday choice.

Room Tip: Suite 301 on the top floor has a four poster and a huge balcony

We travelled to Lefkas for a week at the end of September/beginning of October and stayed at the San Nicolas. We travel to Greece a lot and rarely out of season (or nearly) but more about that later.

We received a warm welcome and were shown to our room which was lovely. Spacious, high ceilings, generous balcony overlooking the bay. Not very much in terms of storage space so those traveling heavy and staying for 2 weeks may struggle a bit in finding place for their belongings but for us it was fine. I agree with a previous review in that tea and coffee facilities would have been a nice touch not least (as someone else has mentioned) because there is a sign in the room that guests should not bring in their own beverages etc. I felt that the hotel is trying to attract a certain clientele who, I expect, might find this notice a bit insulting? Just a thought.

The hotel is pricey - coffee at €5, cocktails at €9 or so (another reason why the notice in the room is a bit cheeky!) and the menu prices for the restaurant, although pretty enticing, were pretty expensive. We would have eaten there had it been a little warmer in the evenings because the outside seating area is beautifully placed and the view amazing.

The pool area was quiet and well maintained although the pool was ice cold! So we didn't spend any time around it. Rather, we spent our time at the jetty area at the bottom of the resort (it is on various levels - good access with lifts) which was lovely. Peaceful, generous amount of beds and the sea was absolutely perfect. There is a beach bar for drinks and food and Arriti, the best member of staff there in my opinion, will make up drinks and deliver them to you.

Breakfast was great - big choice. Always fresh fruit, yoghurt, meats and cheeses, cereals, bread, Danish pastries, cake, juice, tea & coffee. You can ask for eggs and bacon if you would like and again, Arriti was there to attend to everyone in an efficient and lovely way.

There was one chappie serving drinks at the pool bar who didn't seem to take to us at all or maybe he was just unfriendly to everyone - we didn't manage to get a smile out of him once no matter how hard we tried, including leaving tips... You clearly can't win 'em all! So we gave up and didn't go to the pool bar after the second time.

The resort is small and beautiful. It was winding down for the end of what we understand to have been a very busy (and long) season. As I mentioned above, we normally travel to Greece in season and so this was quite unusual although not entirely unexpected. Quiet, few people about. It has it's advantages but the atmosphere was a bit lacking - not down to the place, just the time of year. Our favourite taverna was Molos - family run, super friendly, delicious food at hugely reasonable prices. We were there one evening when we had a huge thunderstorm and they secured everything and we all had a lovely evening together!

We drove around the whole island one day and fell for Syvota as well. Nidri was fun - much more buzzy and a vast choice of bars and tavernas to eat at. We liked it a lot. You do need a car to get about because although we did see local buses, I am not sure if they come down the narrowish windy roads down to Mikros Gaios.

So, in summary, if you like quiet, do go as the season is coming to a close and the San Nicolas is a good choice for r&r in style. Be prepared for Mr Unfriendly though...! Thanks to Arriti who is a complete hunny and who works so hard, for making our stay special and also to the hotel manager who was lovely to us.

We will be back to the island again - for sure although we will probably go for 2 weeks self catering. Not a reflection on the hotel at all, just personal choice.

After a weeks sailing this was the perfect hotel to relax in just a shame about the exorbitant cost of drinks and food. We would have happily stayed in the hotel some evenings but it was better to take the short walk down to the tavernas which were very reasonably priced.
The hotel service was excellent, considering the reduced staff numbers close to the the end of the season.
The design of the building and its interior was modern and tasteful with a really good 25 metre infinity pool and ample lounging area on decking above the crystal clear sea.
We would definately return and hope that the owners have taken note of previous comments about food and drink pricing.

We stayed at the San Nicolas Hotel for one week, after a week of sailing round the Ionian Islands. It was a perfect way to relax in beautiful surroundings. Spacious rooms, comfortable beds, all very clean. Very friendly and helpful staff. Wonderful to swim in the sea straight from lower terraces of hotel.
Just a couple of small niggles though - why no fresh orange juice at breakfast? It was just orange squash!! Also, if you were not down early enough at breakfast, several items were finished and not replaced. The food and drinks were very expensive; we only dined twice at the hotel in the evening. My pizza the first night was awful, burnt and cold. Also there was only one waiter serving, and he had to prepare drinks and desserts too. I know it's near the end of the season, but I think the hotel is understaffed. Whilst it was nice to dine outside overlooking the bay, it got quite cold as the evening progresssed and I had to wear my coat!! Not exactly the dining experience I was looking forward to!
The towels and bathmat provided in the bathroom have seen better days and need replacing. (The "bath" towel was more like the size of a hand towel!)
We hired a car for the week and it is certainly an "experience" driving around the numerous steep hairpin bends from the main road down to Mikros Gialos! Not for the faint-hearted!
Several friendly tavernas about 10 minutes walk from hotel, serving typical Greek food. Very reasonably priced too. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at San Nicolas, and appreciated the peace and quiet there.

Room Tip: All the rooms have sea views and balconies.
