“Excellent small hotel from Thompson”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2011

My partner and I recently visited the Country Inn Kalithea and had a great time despite the weather. As background we are 26 and 27 years old, like going out, nice food, nice places, don't mind eating local over finding English and have traveled all over the world. Hopefully that helps you out when reading this.

We read alot of reviews before going and booked everything through Thompson which was a first time but a pleasant and pain free experience.

The Hotel and Room:
it's situated on the outskirts of Kalithea (10 minutes walk) and close to an amazing and really gorgeous small town called Afitos (20 minutes walk). Upon approaching the Hotel teh drive doesn't look great but the hotel itself is really nice, small friendly and inviting, with only 18 rooms you're not going to get alot of hustle and bustle and everything is kept up to a good standard. Rooms are well suited to this, they offer a clean room, small bathroom, fridge, tv, nice balcony with chairs and table and a dresser table and hairdryer etc.
The gardens are really nice and the pool is a good small size with a really nice bar and outside seating area. basically it looks really nice and doesn't disappoint from the pictures you can find easily online.

Location:
its close to two towns and close to the beach so shouldn't disappoint. Myself and my partner didn't rate Kalithea, it may have been because we were out of Season, but it just didn't seem a really nice place to go out for a wander and the local shops and restaurants didn't look great either - it's set up for tourists though so maybe we were looking for more Greek local style which it doesn't cater to. outside of this though Afitos (20mins walk) is really nice and was exactly what we were looking for, with nice restaurants, a scenic cobbled streets type of place with good bars and lots of picturesque places to walk and visit.
The walk down to the beach is fine, I've read some reviews were people think its a dodgy path but there's a hand rail all the way down, its a 5 min walk down and no more than 10 minutes back up on this really nice woodland path. The beach itself is gorgeous and we had the luxury of no one on it when we went down to sunbath, apart from a local fisherman a good 100meters away who was happily casting off his line every half an hour or so.
The bus service and transport links are ok, if sporadic, but we found that it was easy to travel to other coastal towns and to also get to the big city Thessaloniki (over an hour on the bus). Taxi's were also easy to get around on.

Overall a great place for couples, maybe not the best for families but I dont know, a really helpful staff and well looked after place make it a really nice break.

I'd go back but we were unlucky with the weather as we hit a thunderstorm for three days. I would recommend this place to friends and family.

Room Tip: We got a corner room which meant we got a view of the sea, gardens and balcony.

We have just returned from a 7 night stay at the Country Inn. We were impressed with the hotel and surroundings. The pool and bar area were immaculate and plenty of sunbeds and parasols for both sunseekers and sunburners like me.

The room was lovely and comfortable and very clean. Ludmilla the lovely maid kept it spotless and changed linen and towels daily. We would have loved to squeeze her in our case she did such a good job.

Breakfast was average, there was not much choice and unfortunately the margarine was off on some days. Boiled eggs were served one day out of the 7, it would have been nice to have a bit more variety or an option to upgrade to a full breakfast.

Bar snacks were good, reasonably priced and service always came with a smile from Vicky and Nancy.

I was not keen on Kalithea at all, it was not geared up for British tourists and the food we had there was abysmal. It is well worth the 30 min walk into Afitos or 5euro in a taxi. In Afitos itself, Steki and Tomato and Pepper were our best meals.

I would advise anyone to hire a car if you visit here to see some more of the area. We hired with Avis - check the prices online first and then mention it, we got a better price and free upgrade to a larger car. We visited Nea Moudania, Sithonia and Thessaloniki - not for the faint hearted!

All in all we enjoyed our week. The accomodation was fab but you do need a car to explore the region unless you just want a week R & R.

The Country Inn Hotel is a very quiet ,well-run place to stay if you want some r r. The atmosphere around the hotel is very good, no noisy children and no traffic noise. The pool and surrounding area is immaculately kept, plenty of sunbeds and attractive gardens. Rooms are cleaned daily by Ludmilla, this woman is a gem, towels and linen changed every day!!!
The bar is well-stocked and not too pricey, compared to the bars in the village. Food at the hotel is average with breakfast being the same choice every day and at lunchtime they had no olives in the greek salad!!!.(OOPS,BIG MISTAKE) Perhaps the management could vary the menu from time to time.
Kalithea is the nearest place for shops and bars, some good places to eat but choose wisely, some are not so good. Plenty of souvenir shops and fur and leather shops.
Aphitos is much better, good bars on the clifftop walk with great views and sunsets. Also some good shops and restaurants, Atepi and Christos are the best.
If you hire a car, drive to Sithonia, the scenery is fantastic and the roads are nade for driving. Visit Kalidas beach, you will not be disappointed.
All in all, a great place to stay for a restful holiday.

Room Tip: ask for seaview

Having just spent two weeks at the Country Inn, I have to agree with all the other reviews. This is a wonderful place if you want a relaxing two week holiday around the pool. The setting is lovely and the hotel itself is spotlessly clean and comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and being such a small hotel (16 rooms), you soon get to know everyone. We met some lovely interesting people.

We are more beach people than pool people, and, at first, we found the 80 rustic steps plus the downhill walk through the woods to the beach a bit of a disappointment. However, we soon got used to it and soon found it a joy. The lovely woods and stunning views were a good compensation and there is no need to rush. Do however use the steps at the hotel next door, which can be accessed by going through the gap in the fence by the hammock. No one minds, as the owners of both hotels are relatives. The beach at the bottom of the path has course sand and submerged rocks. However, a little further up the beach, the other side of the concrete pier, the sand is finer and no rocks. The water is clear and there are some good tavernas just across the road.

The one critism I have about the hotel was the food. The breakfast could have been so much better with a little extra effort and expense. Personally I would have been happy to pay another few pounds for a decent breakfast. Breakfast was from 8 till 10am, and food was served from noon until 10am. The menu was quite limited, which is fine, as its only a small place. However, they had run out of olives and did not buy more ( a Greek restaurant with no olives!), and they had only apple pie as a sweet, as they had run out of other things, and did not want to buy more near the end of the season, which seemed a bit short sighted, as they had a few weeks to go and would have easily sold them. The amount of feta on the Greek salad was also miserly. Also, the hot food was never more than luke warm.

Afitos is lovely old Greek village with little side streets. Its quite lively at night and has plenty of very nice restaurants and tavernas. Stekis and Tomato and Pepper were our favorites. Their fresh fish was fantastic!
Its about a 30 minute walk and most people walked to Afitos in the early evening and got a taxi back (5 euros).
Kallithea is 10 minutes walk and has plenty of restaurants and tavernas (and a big supermarket). The restaurants are OK and quite a bit cheaper than in Afitos.

Thanks to Nancy and Vicky, who looked after us wonderfully well and made the holiday. Also thanks to George the owner, for sorting out our plumbing problem so quickly. He is ther every day and will quickly sort out such problems.

Overall a lovely relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: There are 14 twin rooms, which are all good. There are also two family rooms (suites) which are semi...

We returned from our holiday on September 12th after a wonderful 2 weeks stay. The owner George gave us a cordial greeting on arrival and carried our cases to our room which was on the first foor overlooking the pine trees and sea with views of the Sithonian peninsular. We went to the bar area after unpacking and met Vicky who is Greek but speak perfect English and always gives service with a smile. She is on duty from serving breakfast until 4.00pm. Later we met Nancy who is English and speaks Greek and she is on duty until the last person leaves the bar area. There are meals served in the bar area all day and they are good value. Another person who must be mentioned and that is Loumilla the maid who cleaned our room, changed the sheets and towels every day of our stay. There is ample sun beds and brollies around the pool area for everyone and also some trees for additional shade. Kalithea is a busy holiday resort with amble tavernas, bars, souveneir shops, fur and leather shops. Afitos (30mins walk) is more sophisticated with lots of tavernas but not a lot else except that it is prettier than Kalithea. The meal at the Tomato and Pepper was a memorable one. This is one of the best hotels I have stayed at and I have been to some 5* ones and it is definitely one that we will return to. Dave & Rosie (Leicester)

Just returned from the most wonderful relaxing holiday at the country inn. Where do we start??? The hotel is in an idilic and quiet setting, just a short walk to Kalithea and 20 mins from Afitos.Very clean and very comfortable rooms (cleaning lady was in every day). Nothing too much trouble for any of the staff George the boss available every day, Vicky kept us fed and watered from breakfast til 4 and always had a smile! Lovely frappe!!!! Then Nancy in the evening til midnight (if we left the bar on time!!!)was the perfect hostess with a smile and a knack for making you feel your the only person in the world remembering everyones names from day one. The other campers while we were there were of the same frame of mind as us and we made some very good friends during our stay. We would recommend joining the bbq night as this is the perfect ice breaker. Saturday night is cocktail night!!!!wow, yum hiccup!!!Apart from the hotel eating is best in Afitos. Some wonderful restaurants in a beautiful village. We loved Christo's and Tomato and pepper. We will definately be going back to this little gem of Greece! Jim and Debbie
