The hotel is expensive, the cleaner slacks off and they did not want to accept my debit card.
When you walk in, the hotel lobby is spacious and looks very nice. We got a room number 116 (or close to it - cannot remember) at the back of the hotel. The en-suite room looks fine, has air-conditioning and a little balcony. On the downside the internet did not reach the room (but was available in the hall) and the level of cleaniness was awful. We though about borrowing a cloth to clean at least a cupboard to put our clothes in. The balcony has not been touched by a cleaner and fitlhy. I killed a cockroach on the floor later at night. I wanted to mention it to the reception staff but did not get a chance because of another incident when we were checking out.
They did not want to accept my debit card saying that the terminal is broken and will be repaired in a few days. I had no cash on me and politely offered to pay in a few days when the machine is fixed (against my passport) or withdraw cash but at the hotel's expense (international withdrawal fee). The elderly lady at the reception got really angry and insisted on paying in cash. I did not give in. Later she called someone on the phone, took my card, put it in the machine and as if by magic it worked! Without a word she gave me a receipt and the card before we left. I wonder whether they have 'issues' with their card machine because of taxes.
I don't think it was a good value for 40 euros even though I realize that Kavala is an expensive city.
