Nefeli Hotel Kavala
Reviewed 16 September 2013

The hotel is expensive, the cleaner slacks off and they did not want to accept my debit card.

When you walk in, the hotel lobby is spacious and looks very nice. We got a room number 116 (or close to it - cannot remember) at the back of the hotel. The en-suite room looks fine, has air-conditioning and a little balcony. On the downside the internet did not reach the room (but was available in the hall) and the level of cleaniness was awful. We though about borrowing a cloth to clean at least a cupboard to put our clothes in. The balcony has not been touched by a cleaner and fitlhy. I killed a cockroach on the floor later at night. I wanted to mention it to the reception staff but did not get a chance because of another incident when we were checking out.

They did not want to accept my debit card saying that the terminal is broken and will be repaired in a few days. I had no cash on me and politely offered to pay in a few days when the machine is fixed (against my passport) or withdraw cash but at the hotel's expense (international withdrawal fee). The elderly lady at the reception got really angry and insisted on paying in cash. I did not give in. Later she called someone on the phone, took my card, put it in the machine and as if by magic it worked! Without a word she gave me a receipt and the card before we left. I wonder whether they have 'issues' with their card machine because of taxes.

I don't think it was a good value for 40 euros even though I realize that Kavala is an expensive city.

The price of the hotel is great! The room was clean however the double bed was too single beds put together which wasn't comfy, also, the television didn't work. We had a nice balcony with a table and chair, however the views aren't brilliant. Staff seemed to be friendly, when arriving at the hotel we asked if we could pay on card and showed the receptionist our card. When paying we were told we could not pay on Mastercard, eventually after calling up another member of staff the receptionist accepted our card. On the last day we went for breakfast early and there was a male member of staff who spent the whole breakfast simply stood watching us eat, this was very uncomfortable! Breakfast wasn't very good, the first day I noticed moldy break in the basket.

We stayed here for 2 nights in mid-september as part of a tour group. The hotel is in a good location, opposite the archaeology museum and a pleasant promenade leading into the centre of Kavala with all its bars and restaurants. The breakfast was very poor and basic. The hotel has a rooftop lounge but this a bar, not somewhere you can sit out and read/sunbathe, etc. There are a lot of hotels in Kavala and if I was returning would not be staying at the Nefeli again.

Kavala is an interesting town, with a castle in the old town and the wonderfully restored house of Mehmet Ali - not to be missed.

Room Tip: Front rooms face the sea. Did not notice the noise due to double glazing and a/c unit.

We stayed at the Nefeli Hotel as part of a group tour. The itinerary put us here for two nights with a day trip to Thassos during the day. The hotel is located on one of the two main streets in the town. The main street is quite noisy and there are motorcycles and other vehicles running until all hours of the night. The room had a balcony so it was quite fine in that respect.

One of the people in our group needed to have laundry done and the hotel does NOT offer this service. He stayed behind and missed Thassos to get it done at a local laundramat.

From the balcony, there is a good view of the city wall and tower.

The room is standard but clean and sufficient. The breakfast was OK. The hotel lobby and the breakfast area were noticeably stuffy as the air conditioner did not appear to be on in those areas. The air conditioning did work well in the room which was necessary because the door needed to be closed due to street noise.

If you are staying in Kavala to go to Thassos, you might consider that the ferry from Kavala goes to a less frequented port on Thassos than the ferry from another port that is about an hour's drive away. I am not sure why the group stayed in Kavala when there were hotels at the other port and also hotels on Thassos. I personally would prefer to stay somewhere away from all of the noise of the city.

The hotel is easy walking distance from city sights and the docks. There is a promenade by the docks and places to eat near the hotel. Also, there is a grocery store just about a block away.

Overall, a decent choice for a hotel if you are desiring to stay in Kavala. Note, since this was part of a group tour, we cannot really judge prices for this vs. other hotels.

Room Tip: If you want the balcony and view, that is the front of the hotel. If you want quiet, probably not t...

Hotel is located in a good place with excellent sea view from the front side rooms. Kitchen is not so rich, but reasonable.
