“A real disappointment”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2014

We stayed in April 2014 for 5 days and had booked a Superior Sixth Floor room with terrace and a sea view. The balcony was fantastic and the view was over the main square and out to sea. So far so good! The location is unbeatable! Thats where it ends ....

This is a supposed 5 star property in a five star location masquerading as a lazy 3 star effort.

Firstly, when we arrived the 'spa' which houses the indoor pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and gym were closed for the next two days for holidays. When it re-opened on day three it transpired that it was a tiny place, the pool is almost of the plunge pool variety and there are, in total, two loungers in the entire place. The gym area is almost comical. Upon arrival in late morning the sauna and steam room were cold as was the pool. This is not a 'spa' by expected standards. The outdoor pool was empty presumably as it was too early in the season. The spa closes at 6pm so no after sight-seeking soak here.

Breakfast is served in a nice roof terrace and enclosed room with great views over the Gulf. Unfortunately breakfast is again a tired and lazy affair of over cooked, medium quality staples, left to congeal in uncovered Bain Maries. There is no å la carte egg menu or any real variety. The staff were relatively indifferent and service was patchy.

We also discovered on arrival that the main lobby bar (The Excelsior English Bar and Lounge) was permanently closed for the Summer season and only opens in the winter. This is a joke given that a considerable amount of the hotel advertising photos are devoted to depicting this lounge. This means that the only place to sit/relax/eat/drink/meet friends is the said rooftop breakfast room/terrace/restaurant ......

The worst of all, however, is that the expensive sixth floor room was directly below the rooftop terrace which uses metal legged tables and chairs. From 0600 until 0100 every time a chair is moved there is a thunderous scraping of metal on stone emanating from the ceiling. This is not welcome at 0600 or indeed when you are in bed for the night!

Overall this place needs a really good shake-up. The location alone deserves a much better effort.

Room Tip: Avoid any room underneath the roof terrace if you want any sleep between 0600 and 0100!

Traveled with our children aged 1 and 4.
Stayed for 2 nights.
No problem with early check-in at about 11. The room was ready. The baby cot was ready.
Excellent room (no view though), clean, good accessories (tv, teapot, etc.), a lot of attention to detail.
Excellent breakfast (plenty of delicious food of all types) on the roof (great view).
Very good staff (reception, lobby, breakfast, housekeeping(!) ). All very courteous and helpful!

Strange story with the "tea bags' budget":
There were 4 types of tea available in the room but there was 1 tea bag of each type.
So on the second day I asked for an additional tea bag. For some reason, the reception guy was startled by this request. He wondered whether we already used todays tea bags. After hearing my explanation that there was no tea bag "refill" today he agreed to provide additional tea bags. After a few minutes 2 tea bags were indeed brought to our room. :)
Since there is a teapot in the room I think that the tea bags budget restrictions should be eased.

I have only checked in 6 hours ago, but the first impression counts: great balcony sea view from 6th floor, lovely 7th floor roof terrace all combined with an ideal central location. Parking is an issue but for a fiver the bellboy can park your vehicle in a public car park nearby...good place for a city beak..

Stayed 3 nights at the Electra Palace in Thessaloniki. Found it to be a wonderful hotel with mostly helpful staff in an excellent location (literally in the heart of the city overlooking a lively square and the water). The reception staff was friendly and the rooms (we had requested a 4th or 5th floor room with a balcony) were sizeable...

We have twice stayed in a luxury suite with fantastic views to the harbour from our balcony. The room was spacious and very confortable and the facilities good. Breakfast from the rooftop restaurant was very good and had a good selection of foods, hot and cold. The espresso coffee was excellent and again the views are fantastic. The staff could have been a little more attentive. The indoor pool was surprisingly small.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the harbour.

This is the second time I am visiting thessaloniki and staying in the same hotel. Electra Palace hotel is located right in the center of the city facing a very big square towards the sea.
The rooms are very comfortable, cleaned scholastically, high sleeping quality, kind staff.
There was free wifi in all levels of the hotel but a few times during the nights the connection was not so stable but it might be due to the fact that the hotel was fully booked and there might be too many connections. I will definitely come again in this hotel.

Room Tip: Best view from the rooms facing the sea and the square of Aristotelous.
