I stayed at Seashell Cottage with my husband and two sons - 16 and 12 in the summer of 2012. We had an amazing time and we all look forward to going again. The whitewashed cottage with it's blue shutters is nestled quietly amongst olive groves with a tantalising glimpse of the Kalloni Gulf on the approach road. The owners provided excellent directions and we found our way from the airport with only one slight detour - blame the map reader! When we arrived the cottage was spotlessly clean with fresh bed linen and plenty of towels to hand and we soon felt very much at home. The kitchen was cool and airy, the fully tiled shower room easily coped with us all and the bedrooms were perfect for a good night's sleep - the air conditioning gently cooling us. Breakfast was eaten outside on the terrace each morning to the sounds of the cicadas and the 'pup, pup, pup' of the fishing boats that lazily set off across the gulf. Having a hire car meant we could explore the island. The cottage owners had thoughfully provided books and leaflets of places of interest and we purchased a really useful map online from Standfords before we departed. The roads were well surfaced and well signposted and although it is fair to say that in some places the island can look a tad down-at-heel, the coast line is beautiful and the clear waters are never far away where ever you are on the Island. The hills and forests smell heavenly and provide a contrast to the beach with dramatic rock formations and spectacular views. Each resort that we visited had it's own unique character; some quiet and some catering very much for the needs and requirements of visitors. A phrase book came in very handy and we really enjoyed trying out the language and didn't have any problems. The food was fresh and local - we ate lots of freshly caught fish and of course greek salads. The highlight for the boys was the calamari at Skala Polichintou - straight from the fishing boat to the kitchen to the plate - food fit for the Gods indeed - I kept looking round for Rick Steine. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday where you do your own thing, at your own pace, I heartily recommend Seashell Cottage. If you love nature, birdwatching, stunning views and you don't want to be part of the throng, if you love snorkelling, collecting shells, and swimming in a sea that feels as though you have been wrapped in warm silk, Lesvos is for you. Seashell Cottage is the perfect base to set out from each day and explore and it's like a little home from home at the end of the day. Incidentally if the lights do happen to go out the heavens above more than make up for it - the night sky is amazing. Writing this review has reminded me just how fortunate we were to stay here and I've only hinted at the hidden gems of this Island. Thank you Seashell Cottage. See you again.
