There is a train that you can take from Katakolon to the site but we missed it so shared a cab with another couple that was about 30 Euros altogether. Very quiet when we were there and it was great to wander from ruin to ruin and read the information signs at our own pace. The trees were in blossom and lots of poppies in bloom so very enjoyable. Well worth a visit.

Today we visited Ancient Olympia, the site of the first Olympics. The site is quite large but there is a lot of shade so it was very pleasant to wander through. The ruins are well documented and the nearby museum helps to bring it all to life. Although the ancient stadium was impressive, the Temple of Zeus was beautiful with the cherry blossom trees in bloom. There were other fairly well preserved ruins too, such as a bath house, that made it quite interesting. It was well worth taking a day out of our Athens visit. Alex with Athens Tour Greece was our driver and guide and he was AWESOME.

Nice historical stop. We were a group of 11 and we found the site easy to tour without a guide. Entrance fee was not too much as the kids were free. The museum had some magnificent pieces and a must see as well.

Olympia is an amazing site with lots of history, and a must visit when you tour the peloponnese.

Unfortunately, a lot of people have the same idea, so the site is marred by a large number of the dreaded tour group tourists being shepherded around, so to avoid them either go very early, say 8am when the site opens, or very late, say 6pm.

You need about toe hours to completely check the place out. Few of the tour groups actually go that deep into the site and they just tour one of the corners, so you can get away from them by walking a bit further. In particular, none of the tour groups go all the way into the stadium.

A must see for any athlete, this is the place where it all started! Get the feel of being an olympian in the old days.
