The site of the ancient Olympic Games. The sit is huge with many ruins all around. It is still an active site and you could see where they were excavating even more. You can run on the same patch of land they did races on in ancient times. It is quite a site to see.

This place was quite spread out, but with a guide you can learn alot about the history. We spent half a day here wich would be enough.

Standing among the scattered clumps of stones and odd remaining columns at the original Olympic site, contemplating what life must have been like some 28 centuries ago is definitely recommended for any person who is at all curious about our history. A useful primer of what you are about to see and experience is provided by a brief visit to the archeological museum first.

It is a large archeological site with little shade so be prepared to do a great deal of walking , wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a good imagination. The tour in the company of a knowledgeable guide is well worth your while. Surrounding you are the remains of competition fields, practice fields, homages to long forgotten Greek gods, temples honoring them, as well as accommodations for early Olympic athletes.

It is truly an inspirational place. Don’t miss it.

We visited the site in late April. The site of Ancient Olympia is extremely well kept and beautiful. When we visited, the trees were in a beautiful purple bloom. They offset the dark green vegetation and the creamy white archeological ruins. There was a delightful, light aromatic scent on the air from all the flowers.

The site is between some low rising mountains and was lush. Apparenly, the site becomes quite dry during the summers and water stations have been set up to protect it in case of fire.

The site is easy to walk, but there is a lot of walking. But, it has a canopy of tree branches for sunny days, where one can find shade. There are several WC and I recommend the one near the workshop of Pheidias, off of Sacred way. Remember to bring things like water, hats, sunscreen and good walking shoes.

The Ancient Olympics all started here. All that is left are ruins and stories. I highly recommend a good tour guide to bring the site alive, point out the building and restore it to it's original grander. Hear about the fountains and lifestyles of the Ancient Greeks, the activities of the athletes and the almost religious aspects of the site.

The museum is wonderful. Full of exciting and interesting artifacts. From battle gear such as helmets, armour and shields to beautiful sculpture and pediments from the buildings.

Take the time and visit this site. It will take at least 3 hours +.
