This museum is worth seeking out - even though I'd lived in Patras for a year it was a revelation. It is imaginatively curated, beautifully arranged and lit, and with very good information available in Greek and excellent English [something of a rarity!]. The mosaics are particularly stunning and have been beautifully conserved.

This collection of treasures is a must see in Patras. Everything is beautifully and intelligently displayed with the mosaics the highlight. The building is interesting and contributes to a very enjoyable visit.

I did enjoy this place. It is well laid out, beautifully curated, and there are many good objects on display.

However, you are not allowed to take photos of any objects, and you also cannot purchase a catalogue as one such does not exist. So you can't bring anything with you. As an archaeology student, that was most disappointing - a museum collection shouldn't just be standing around for people to look at! I should be able to at least purchase a catalogue so I can study the artefacts when not in Patras.

For this reason, the museum collection lacks a very important dimension and has little international and academic value, which is a great shame. It has so much potential.

Might be good for tourists who just want to see some old stuff, though.

We visited the New Archaeological Museum of Patras in October 2013.

Pros: An amazing display of all kind of artifacts, from the prehistory till the Roman times. The mosaics are specially impressive - I've never seen such a brilliant collection anywhere. There are lots of panels with huge amounts of interesting information. Also, a bonus point for all architecture lovers: the building is a fine piece of modern architecture, with a silvery dome and a neat structure.

Free (and huge) parking.

Cons: None.

Practical information and tips: The museum only opens from 8:30 am to 3 pm, so be sure to go in the morning (closed on Mondays).

Overall: Patras is often overlooked, since people just pass by to and from the ferry station. We had some time to spare and were lucky to discover this hidden gem. If you're catching a ferry there or happen to be in the zone, save some time and go visit this museum: it's totally worth it.

Finally Patras has the archeological museum it deserves. The building is modern and with great architecture. The artifacts inside are fantastic coming from Patras and the surrounding area. A real highlight are the mosaics. A definite place to visit when in Patras.
