With Patras now crammed with trendy bars and predictable fast food joints, even a traditional baker was hard to find, but a good traditional Greek trattoria was rare. Nicely placed just beyond the beautiful Olgas Square (with the Apollo theatre, a direct copy of the La Scala opera house), 'Toulas' is more a canteen than a restaurant. You go to a counter where the homemade dishes are displayed and you choose your feast. The waitress brings food, wine, bread and the expected joys of a restaurant meal to your table. Food is very fresh and of sufficient range to make choosing difficult. The bread was crisp-crusted, fresh or made from that gorgeous cream-coloured Greek flour. The open wine was beautiful. The place is clean, full of Greeks, and open enough so I could view nearly every table and wallow in the atmosphere of happy eaters eating happily. Warning: portions are huge so take a large appetite and have the time to enjoy the meal.
