This hotel is in a perfect location. It sits at the back of a small cove fronted by an excellent beach for bathing and water sports. Although it looks a little industrial from the out side the interior of the hotel is excellent. In particular the indoor sitting area is light cool and welcoming when you need a break from the sun and an excellent place to relax in the evening.
We paid an up grade for a superior room although most of the rooms appeared to be of good quality. Our superior was large, well designed and very clean. It had an excellent view across both the large hotel pool and also across the bay to Skopelos. In many ways it was a day dream of a room.It was a t nighttime that the room became a mare. The so called air conditioning was useless. I have come across more powerful snail farts . Not only that but essentially puffed out warm air. We mentioned this at reception after our first sweaty sleepless night. The receptionist was keen to help and sent a member of the technical staff to help. Sadly the next night was even hotter (it measured 90 in the room). So we returned to reception to express our concern. This time the manager came out to see us. He is a big guy and his first tactic is to be loud and aggressive. However I am of good scouse Irish stock so he soon realized that this would not work. He then decided to behave like an ostrich and bury his head in the sand. He seemed to think that if he just denied every thing that we would just give up and go away. After a long discussion where we constantly reminded him that we were supposedly staying in a superior room he decided that we could have a fan in our room and made it clear we should be grateful for his help?
That night we slept with the fridge door open and the fan blowing the air from the fridge around the room. This was hugely better than the air conditioning. It was only sweltering. We complained again and asked to be moved. He lied and said there were no spare rooms. Eventually after a long argument he offered us another room. It was tiny and right at the back of the hotel. It had little of a view and obviously it was not acceptable. The technician eventually gave us a key so that the air conditioning would stay on all day. This worked to a limited extent but it then poured out soot and muck all over the floor and it meant we had to keep the doors and windows closed all day which defeats the object of being somewhere warm and sunny.
The staff at the hotel were excellent although clearly undermanned they were always willing and helpful.
Another criticism would have to be of the furniture around the pool and outside of the dining area. Much of it was old, damaged and in some cases dangerous. It is clear the manager does not like investing in his hotel unless absolutely necessary.
I was pleasantly surprised by the breakfast. Having read some of the reviews it seemed that they would be limited in quality and quantity. However I have to say that food was plentiful and of a good standard. Fresh fruit, meats, omelettes, breads, cheese, cake etc were all provided and regularly topped up by the hard working staff. Water could have been more plentiful ( I could not understand why it was served in a little jug that quickly was emptied. Fruit juice would have been nice instead of powdered concentrate.
The bar was good and bar man excellent fun and very goods at his job.
The beds around the pool were disgusting. The mats on them had obviously been there since the hotel opened and they have never been cleaned since. many of them were falling to pieces.. The pool however was well maintained by the technician who again was hard working and delightful. In fact the only person who wasn't hard working and delightful seemed to be the manager. On the day that we left he asked us to write in trip advisor about his hotel. We pointed out our complaints. He astonishingly said we should have come to him because he would have sorted us out. He obviously had so little concern for us that he didn't even know who we were and that we had complained to him!
I wouldn't tell people not to go to the Kanapitsa. It has many lovely aspects and is in a delightful location. But don't expect to get what it says on the package and be prepared to deal with stubborn ostrich if you raise queries about the quality of the product. Unless the manager gets his act together and begins managing and investing time and money in his business I believe that it will soon become a true night mare and fall into ruin. I hope he can find the motivation to do so as it would be a waste of a great facility.
