“Excellent !!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2012

We stayed at the Villa Apollon from 13 to 27 July 2012 and had a great holiday. The whole holiday was extremely relaxing and provided a much needed break. Dounia and the Captain ensure your stay is very enjoyable and are extremely good hosts. The facilities are excellent including the large pool. As I had a dental emergency during the holiday Dounia arranged an appointment with her dentist and took me there by car !! - first class service indeed !!
The properies are cleaned regularly and the whole stay is strees free.
As promised we will definitely return.
Mike

We stayed here for 7 nights and it was our first trip to
Skiathos. We did choose the Apollon because of the TA reviews and really it was just as we expected: a friendly welcoming place with a great view! The accommodation is basic and rooms not very big but having travelled to over 14 Greek islands over the years, I would say this is the norm. If you want 5 star, book a big holiday hotel owned by global conglomerate hotel chains - but why line their pockets when you can have the real thing? Give me a local family run concern any time and really experience Greece as it is. Wonderful food available - HUGE portions, really the chicken is for at least 2 people! We found Dounia and the Captain lovely and really helpful, and they work so hard for about 15 hours a day, I don't know how they manage it. The pool can be noisy if everyone just happens to be there at the same time but in our experience that only happened a couple of times. As for the steep walk to the beach: yes there are 79 steps down to the beach and in extreme heat along with the road walk it can be hard and popping out for an ice cream is not something you would consider lightly, however if you want the stunning amazing views then you have to be high up right? We travelled all along the south of the island by bus and we only ever experienced friendliness and warmth from the locals. We also used the wonderful water taxi into town and then from there went to Skopelos which was a really great trip. The town of a skiathos comes alive at night but is still charming and relatively unspoilt. We would highly recommend - after a week I felt more relaxed than I have in ages! Beautiful island, lovely place to stay.

Room Tip: If you want twin beds in your room, ask in advance, and it maybe be a little quieter away from the p...

Hi
Before i begin my review please take into account all the wonderful reviews about the Villa as opposed to the bad reviews and then make your own mind up and as you will see the majority of the reviews are fantastic and also true and honest
This is our 9th visit to the Villa Apollon and we feel like we come home every year, we have been all over the world but still return here because of Skiathos itself but also because of Dounia and Captain and their care and attention to their guests and their pride in their home which you feel part of, yes one big family !
Location is super, bus stop 9 across the road which takes you into town or one of the many beaches on the south side of the island
A lovely way to travel into town at night is the water taxi , 10 - 15 mins walk ( even with a three year old ) down hill to Acaladies beach where you board the water taxi ( 2.50 euros )
Taxi into town is really conveniant and you can pick one up right outside the gates of the villa or Dounia will be only too happy to order you one ( cost 8 euro )
We hire a jeep for the whole two weeks as we like the beaches on the north side of the island, Mandraki Elias being our fav, the other fav is reached by bus stop 26 and is Mustique , turn left before the road to Banana, beautiful white sand ,clear blue sea, waiter service and our daughter loved it as it was so shallow , no large dip into the sea
We tried new restaurants this year Lo & La , fabulous Italian in the old harbour with lovely owners who made such a fuss of our daughter and are really child friendly
Also Porta Rossa, just down the dip from the Villa, piano man playing which is a nice touch, but watch out BIG Portions
We do eat out every other night but THE BEST food on the Island is Villa Apollon food, really honestly this is the truth.... why because its fresh and made to order with love and care, spatchcock chicken to die for, king prawn & lobster spagetti, my husband had a pork chop which weighed 2 kilos....and yes he ate it all
The greek salad has added extra special qualities this year, i could drink the marinade captain makes
If you want anything you just have to ask, we went on a cataman one day and asked Dounia if we could have Beef Stafado in the eveining, the best ever with mash potato and gorgeous sauce
Breakfast is fantastic from 'english breakfast', ham, cheeses, jams and spreads all home made, juices, yogurts and fruit, everyone catered for even the fussy
Rooms are cleaned everyday by the lovely Donna and Jack also helps out with anything else you need
New addition this year beach towels so no need to add to your luggage allowance those extra towels
We meet old friends and new every year, and this adds to the special qualities of the Apollon , you know who you are xx
Villa Apollon really is family five star ,from the food to the care and attention you receive from Captain and Dounia, they really do appreciate their guests and no one can tell our family otherwise, we love you xxx
STAY HERE YOU WONT REGRET IT X

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2012

Our June, 2012 vacation was our 8th holiday in Skiathos, but our first stay at Villa Apollon and whilst we’ll definitely be back on the island we won’t stay at Villa Apollon again. Before I start this review, please understand that I’m not some sort of crank who gets a kick out of slagging places off in vindictive and childish reviews – this will be a genuine review and I’ll try to give an absolutely honest review of our experience. We chose the accommodation based on the other reviews on Trip Advisor and so I think it is only reasonable that whilst the owners enjoy the benefits of such positive reviews, they should also accept those that are, equally honest, but perhaps not quite so complimentary. My overall review takes into account everything – good AND bad. If you want just the BAD bits scan read most of what I’ve wrote but definitely pay attention to the “ATMPOSPHERE / HOSTS” section!

Location
Apollon is probably about a third of the way along the island from the town / airport – ideally situated for a couple of beaches and shops. A taxi from the airport should cost you no more than 10 – 12 Euros; to Skiathos Town it should be maybe 7 or 8 Euros. There are bus stops within a couple of minutes walk from the entrance to the property and taxis pass by regularly, but I would definitely recommend hiring a car to get about the island (get a 4x4 if you’re planning on visiting the more remote beaches as the roads are often no more than dirt tracks). You will find a number of places to eat nearby, but your choice will be restricted a little if you’re planning on walking. It’s also worth mentioning that Apollon’s stunning views come at a price – to see so much, you’ve got to be really quite high up. This means that walking to the shops / beaches from Apollon is fine – but the journey back will be steep and hard-going for all but the fittest. Not what you want if you’re perhaps a little unsteady on your feet, infirm or suffer from respiratory problems. It’s also a bit of a pain when you’ve got a couple of kids in tow. The entrance to the property is directly on the main road but the actual accommodation is set a little way back and up / away from the traffic.

First Impression
You enter the property through some substantial automatic gates – a real plus in terms of security. The place looks nice – there’s a driveway and the architecture is typically Greek. I understand that there are about 16 apartments. It looks clean and well maintained with pretty gardens and trees. The pool area is on the cosy side when it comes to size. There is a well stocked bar too. We stayed in a studio on the ground floor. On the surface it looks clean and with everything that you’d expect in Greek holiday accommodation – nice enough, but really nothing special or extraordinary. On arrival the greeting seems friendly enough. First impressions are really good – this place looks lovely – really nice.

Room
The room is a little on the small side compared to other places we’ve stayed in Skiathos but not too small or so small that you’d complain or moan. There are the usual pieces of furniture – bedside tables, dressing table, wardrobe etc. The room has air-conditioning, which takes a while to get going and even then it never really gets properly chilled – but it’s better than no air-conditioning. It might be better in other rooms. There is a TV with a very poor reception and virtually no channels. There is an iron, that spits white lime-scale all over your clothes when you use the steam function. The ironing board could do with replacing – it looks quite old and a little dirty and rickety.
The ‘kitchen’ consists of a two-ring hob, microwave, various pots, pans, utensils, crockery, a kettle, a toaster and fridge. The cupboards were clean-ish but could have done with a good going over. The fridge looked clean but had a bit of a funny smell. The ‘kitchen area’ is very small indeed and it is virtually impossible to prepare anything other than the most simple of meals / food (breakfast cereal / toast / beans / soup etc.) If you like to do a bit of cooking with local ingredients, you’ll be very frustrated at the size and usability of the ‘kitchen’. If I’m honest – you’ll struggle making a few sandwiches to take to the beach because there just isn’t enough work – surface and the little bit you do have is actually the draining board for the sink.
The bed is comfortable enough and comes with the usual covering of one sheet. There is an additional blanket in the wardrobe, but it looks a little bit past it to be honest.
The balcony is an okay size with a great sea-view (one of the best on the island I reckon) although I would have preferred to be on the top (1st) floor so that I was a bit further away from the sound of the gardener outside. There is a table and a couple of chairs that have seen better days and a metal rack attached to the balcony railings from which you can hang your washing (provided you buy some pegs as there were only two or three when we arrived).
The bathroom is small and has a shower, sink, toilet and mirror. Greek holiday bathrooms always smell a bit funny but this one seemed worse than others I’ve stayed in. It wasn’t unbearable but it also wasn’t pleasant. The smell got worse when you had a shower or let water run in the sink. I suspect that the drains were perhaps a little blocked. The shower was alright really in terms of power/ temperature etc. but the shower curtain was one of those nylon-fabric ones that feels really disgusting when it touches your skin. It looked like it had never seen the inside of a washing machine and could have done with a thorough clean (if not a replacement). This, along with the smell meant that showers were a rather quick affair.
All in all the room is just okay really. It’s better than some I’ve stayed in, but considerably worse than others. In my opinion – it’s over-priced. It wasn’t what I expected given the reviews on here and it was certainly let down by the bathroom and kitchen. If you’re a bit of a ‘clean-freak’ than you’ll be quite disappointed. If you don’t mind a bit of a smell when you’re washing, don’t cook when you’re on holiday and can ignore a bit of tattiness and grime then you’ll think the room is fine. One the surface it’s good but really the kitchen and bathroom are dated and are desperately in need of an update.

The Pool / Area
A decent sized pool that has a shallow end with steps and a deeper end into which quite a few guests felt comfortable diving. The pool is lined rather than tiled – not that this matters, just thought I’d mention it. The water looks good but there is quite a bit of dirt and grime on the bottom of the pool. Whilst it might have been cleaned during our stay, I didn’t witness this and I certainly didn’t see any change in the dirt / amount of floating debris during the 14 days that we stayed.
The area around the pool is what I’d call compact. There are maybe 18 – 20 beds and a number of tables with chairs. Some of the beds and all of the tables have parasols. Those beds without parasols are right next to the family accommodation so you wouldn’t want them for a couple of reasons; 1 – you feel a bit cheeky setting up camp directly outside someone else’s room, 2 – you’d be in the sun all day… hello sun-burn! The number of beds is restricted by the physical dimensions of the place but given that there could be maybe 60-odd guests, it’s not really enough. It can get quite busy around the pool and so you feel a bit ripped off if you can’t have a bed to lie on especially as the reason you probably picked this place is because it has a nice looking pool. There seems to be a tradition of getting up early to reserve a bed so those early risers amongst you will be fine, but if you want to get up later than say 8:30am just accept the fact that you’re not getting a bed today. It might be different at other times of the year but it was very busy when we stayed in June – god knows what it would be like during the kids’ holidays. Speaking of which… There are a number of family rooms at the property so as you’d expect there are lots of kids at the pool. Noisy and uncontrolled kids. Okay, so this isn’t the owners fault but if you hate noisy kids you’ll be wanting to spend most of your time at the beach.

The Bar / Food
There is a pool bar at the property. It’s well stocked with local and branded wines, spirits and beers. It’s not overly expensive, but it’s not cheap. The owners are reluctant to take your money with each ‘purchase’ opting instead to put it on your bill. Be very careful of this – not because they’ll add things you didn’t have or anything, I’m sure they are absolutely 100% honest – just because it would be very easy to rack up a hefty bill without realising. I reckon some families must have a bill of maybe 400 / 500 Euros (probably even more when I come to think about it) by the end of their stay! I reckon this is where the owners make most of their money.
The food is good and there is a pretty good selection considering it’s not officially a restaurant – more of a grill / bbq really. Everything is cooked by the Captain and he’s very good. You’ll enjoy anything you get to eat, but the prices are a bit off really. For example, a Greek salad was 10 Euros! That’s a bit steep when you consider what’s actually in it and that the most expensive places on the harbour in the town are only charging 6 or 7.
A continental breakfast is available every day with a free one on Sundays. It’s definitely worth going down on a Sunday. Not sure about the rest of the week though.

Security
The property seems very secure compared to other places we’ve stayed. There are hefty automatic gates at the entrance, which is also monitored by CCTV. Each room has a safe – although we left money out loads of times when we went out for the day and it was still there when we got back. The doors to each apartment are reasonably secure and can be locked as you’d expect. However, locking your room is a bit pointless as the maid is intent on rendering the locks redundant by leaving the bathroom window open every day (probably because of the smell).

Cleaning / Maintenance / Services
There is a maid and a handy man. They are both from Bangladesh I think. Obviously it’s not really any of my business but I wasn’t too keen on the way they were treated by the owners. The female owner (I believe she is called Dounia) in particular, spoke to them both, in my opinion, like they were slaves! The male owner (Captain) was a bit better with them. You just get the feeling that they are working all the hours god sends for bread, water and a place to sleep – obviously I could be totally wrong and they might absolutely love working there!
The maid makes your bed every day and gives the place a quick tidy – not bad really, but as I’ve said earlier, the place could do with a thorough clean before each set of new guests.

Atmosphere / Hosts
Well – here it is – the reason my overall rating is so low!
The place is owned by The Captain (of what I do not know) and Dounia. Captain is a very pleasant, friendly and amiable chap. He seems helpful, cheerful and always happy to chat and say hello – I really can’t fault him. A proper nice bloke, great cook, top barman – all you could ask for in a host. Dounia, on the other hand, is rude, off-hand, snotty, disrespectful, miserable, unwelcoming, unfriendly and an altogether awful host. She could potentially ruin your holiday just by looking at you. You’ve heard about Medusa from Greek mythology right? The one that turns people to stone – yeah, well it’s not a myth. She’s alive and well and running a hotel in Skiathos. This woman could suck the happiness out of a new-born baby. Honestly, if there was one job that I would say Dounia should not do – it’s Hotel Hostess. Okay, maybe I’ve been a little unfair here but the fact is that when I go on holiday I don’t want to be in the company of people who look at you like you are an inconvenience – particularly people who I’m paying! I’m sure that in private Dounia is probably very nice and she’s obviously a very astute business woman but as far as the guests are concerned she should leave it to the Captain.
You will feel like any request you make is being cheeky – not like a guest who’s actually paid for this experience. Report a problem at your peril. Okay, so it will get done – the problem will be sorted, but it’ll be like you’ve asked her to drown a kitten or something (then again… ha ha ha).
No look – some people obviously like her and she obviously likes some people too although I suspect this has to do with the size of the bar bill they’re racking up rather than their scintillating conversation and electric personalities. This place is incredibly ‘clique-y’. If you’re ‘in’ with the ‘in-crowd’, the regulars and the cronies then you’ll be fine. If you’re not; if you want a quiet relaxing holiday; if you want to eat out; cook food in your room and buy your bottles of water from the supermarket then you can get stuffed.
These ‘clique’ people take over the pool area every day so you feel unwelcome – like you’ve taken their beds; like you’re swimming in their pool. Once again, I might be being unfair here, but this is what I experienced. The ‘clique’ people were loud and rowdy in the evening too – when we ate at the pool bar they took over the place. When they ate out, they came back late and continued to party until the early hours. You might say that this has nothing to do with the owners or that I’m being a boring old party pooper. But the fact is that this type of behaviour was not discouraged by the owners – rather the contrary. Okay, so we like to keep ourselves to ourselves but I’m only 51 and there’s life in the old dog yet and I still like to have a good time. Just not every night and at the expense of other people’s enjoyment of their holiday.
Okay, so why didn’t I mention this to her at the time? Well – I really didn’t feel like I could – given her attitude.

You might feel that my review and overall rating is unfair or inaccurate, but I can assure you that this is how I feel about our holiday experience at Villa Apollon. Overall it’s a nice place, but it’s not outstanding and I can’t understand why it’s rated as the second best place on the island. I’d say that in most respects this place is average or even above average but it’s let down by a number of small things that could easily be fixed… cleanliness; standard and age of fit and finish / equipment; other guests, cliques and what’s considered acceptable behaviour; price is too high for what you get; expensive bar and food and most of all… Dounia. These are the reasons the rating is Poor rather than Average.

I do hope that you find this review helpful. Don’t let it stop you staying at Villa Apollon, just allow it to inform your decision.

Room Tip: Request a room as far away from the noisy pool as possible.

"Sarcastic and untrue comments (i.e. Breakfast free on Sunday - breakfast is included in the room price for the entire stay, and suggestion that hosts are dishonest by the way they do not charge immediately for guests drinks and food). Also personal attack on one of the hosts, which is based on untruths, and warning to future guests not to visit the hotel if that person is still there".

a fantastic place with 16 rooms looking over achladies beach. the room wasn't massive, but was well equipped for everything you need for self catering, was exceptionally clean, and free air conditioning and safe. also included in the price are beach towels, which is useful for the ever increasing demands on flight luggage. we had a wonderful welcome when we arrived and complimentary welcome drink. there was never any more than around 4 people in the pool at any time, it was always so peaceful. Captain and Dounia were great hosts, creating a brilliant atmosphere... i particularly enjoyed trying to pay for our food and drinks at the bar one night and Captain saying "No No! Pay tomorrow, pay tomorrow!" - very trusting, and is a classic example of their relaxed atmosphere. also, great evening food and great breakfast: bacon, sausage eggs/omelette, beans, toast, homemade jams, fruit etc. people staying here seemed evenly split between couples and families. i must also mention how hard working the maid and assistant were too. thank you so much, and if we decide to come back to skiathos (which is beautiful by the way!) we will come back here without doubt.

We have just returned from an 11 night stay at the fabulous Villa Apollon, Skiathos and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a well equipt and clean Villa. We were given a warm welcome on arrival from The Captain & Dounia who couldn't do enough for us throughout our stay. The rooms are very clean (I am verging on OCD) and air conditioning works well. But it is the beds that make it. Proper mattresses from UK ensured a really good night sleep. I even had to set an alarm for breakfast!! Breakfast to suit all tastes well cooked and well presented. The Sunday special breakfast is not to be missed- Salmon & Cavair. Spoilt! The Captains food is second to none. The huge meals are freshly prepared and beat anything you can eat in Skiathos Town.
The pool and bar area is comfortable and relaxing with amazing views of Achladies Bay. All rooms have the same sea view. The Villa is in a great position for the beautiful Achladies Beach and the bus stop is a just yards from the Villa for a short bus ride into Skiathos Town or you can take the water taxi from the beach.
What I liked best about Villa Appollon was the atmosphere which Dounia and the Captain have created. There was always someone at the bar or pool to chat and share stories with without it ever being over crowded . Most people staying while we were there were regulars who have visited year after year. I have a rule that I never revisit anywhere....the world is too big. However.......rules are there to be broken and I guarantee we will be returning to Villa Apollon and recommend it to all our family and friends.

This is our fourth visit to Villa Apollon, Skiathos. We have been visiting the island for over 17 years and tried the Villa. The Couple who own the apartments are the most amazing people, They live on the property and make you so welcome, we will always go back, in fact we have started to meet other people who do the same thing, so it is like a reunion every year. The food that they prepare is second to none, and the prices are very reasonable and personally we would not stay anywhere else.
