Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Copenhagen

The famous Arne Jacobsen designed hotel is located downtown Copenhagen next to Tivoli Gardens. The room (Royal Club Room) was spacious and delicately furnished. Breakfast served on top floor - excellent food! Service is good, really good drinks in the lobby bar. Highly recommended. "Everything" within walking distance.

Hotel overall is ok. Very good breakfast, nice building, good location, free Internet (excellent!!!). Nothing bad, nothing excellent either.

I had compact room. If you wonder how sardines feel in a can, try compact room ;-). Seriously, it's extremely small. Do not take it - friends of mine had bigger rooms and were very pleased.

Apparently room service is bad - I tried it only once (club sandwich) and it was standard.

To sum up - normal Radisson. Not bad, not amazing. You'll not be disappointed unless you choose compact room.

We had such a pleasant stay at Radisson Royal during our five-night, New Year's eve stay that rating the hotel with anything less than 5/5 would seem rather mean.

- The location is very convenient, particularly so if Tivoli ( right across the street ) or the central train station ( one block away ) are high on your priorities' list. The Town hall square and the western end of Stroget ( the main shopping area ) are just a 5 minutes' walk away. The only alternative worthy of consideration perhaps ( location-wise ) would be somewhere close to Kongens Nytorv, particularly during the winter months, for those not willing to spent any time walking in the cold temperatures but still wanting to be right on Stroget's restaurant and shopping action.

- Service was pleasant and helpful.

- The breakfast was very nice, everything there was of very high quality ( only the sweet options were perhaps somewhat undistinguished ).

- The hotel features two restaurants, one of which ( the panoramic Alberto K, of Italo-Scandinavian flavor ) is considered to be one of the best in Denmark. As it was under renovation during our stay we did not get an opportunity to sample it, but judging from the quality of room service ( and of the breakfast as well ) the food options are a worthy ( and convenient ) alternative to the numerous restaurants in the surrounding area.

- Upon arrival, we were given an option of various rooms to choose from, one of which was a smoking room on the hotel's top floor corner. Normally we wouldn't consider a smoking option at all but since the receptionist was so enthusiastic about the room itself, we decided to give it a try - and we will always be grateful to her for that. The room's view was nothing but stunning - encompassing almost all of the city's landscape, and facing right across towards the Tivoli park. We ended up spending 3 out of our 5 nights ordering room service instead of going out just because it was so pleasant simply being there - to say nothing of the amazing sunrise. The room itself was of good size ( it was a royal club room ), and it included a handy Nespresso coffeemaker. Fortunately dubbing is loathed in Denmark and there are always subtitled English-speaking movies and series to watch ( and German-speaking as well ) together with news and sports. The room also provided wireless ( somewhat intermittent ) and broadband ( with a network cable ready ) for internet connection.

- The hotel gym is the best training facility I have ever used in a hotel. To put it properly, it is better than 99% of all training facilities out there, anywhere ( it is an independent fitness club housed on the hotel's first floor ).

Much has been made regarding the hotel's uncompromising 60s Scandinavian style. Views on styling are subjective. Therefore I will not comment on the particulars of styling itself, but I must say that the Hotel feeling so much Danish in everything actually enhanced our Copenhagen experience and we very much appreciated it for that - it just feels so much a part of the place itself.

A bit of noise from the train station ( and sometimes from the room next to us ) occasionally made it through to our room, nothing really annoying though. Bits and pieces in the hotel seem a bit worn, but cleanliness was faultless.

Entering the Radisson SAS Royal in Copenhagen is like stepping back into a 1960s showroom full of Danish Modern furniture. The place is a modern day shrine to the designs of Arne Jacobsen, but to me it felt mostly antiseptic and cold. The lobby was very quiet, with an odd arrangement of receptionist "pods" rather than a traditional check-in desk. Since the desk clerks seem to lurk in a back room when not actively serving a guest, the place had an odd, empty feeling. My room was a very small single, with room for a double bed, a desk and a chair right out of a doctor's waiting room from 1965. There were no drawers and a very small closet, so there was essentially no place to unpack, so be prepared to live out of your suitcase. The room comes with a convenient teapot, so you can make your own coffee in the morning. In a city as expensive as Copenhagen, that's no small advantage. The TV has a typical range of channels for a European hotel, and thank goodness most of the Danish shows are subtitled rather than dubbed, so there's a steady diet of old American sitcoms and dramas available, as well as ample coverage of Nordic skiing. One of the best features of the SAS Radissons in Europe is their free internet access, which is a cinch to get up and running. One very nice touch was the heated bathroom floor. I wish I had that at home.

The location can't be beat if you've got some free time to stroll around. It's across the street from the Tivoli and a couple of blocks from the start of the Stroget pedestrian shopping area. It's also within an easy walk from the Central train station, so consider taking the 15 minute train ride from the airport ((60DK/rt) instead of a cab (250DK each way), especially at rush hour. The city is beautiful in December, as it's decorated for Christmas and there are numerous small market areas filled with stalls selling gifts, crepes, candied nuts and gluhwein. Every thing is very festive, though the damp cold can be bone chilling.

The best feature of the hotel is its free access to a full size commercial fitness center right in the same building. It beats anything you'd expect from a hotel, and all you need is your key. The breakfast buffet is substantial, but pricey (about $25-30) as are drinks in the lobby bar. The concierge was helpful in recommending and booking a restaurant nearby.

Stayed at the Radisson SAS Royal hotel for a weekend in november. Had a Royal Club room in the 13th floor. The room had a great view, and both the room and bothroom was clean.

Royal Club rooms have breakfast at the 20th floor. This gives a great view, but the resturant is a bit smal, so you might have to wait before you can get seated.

Also used the garage in the basement of the hotel. Remember that you have to order this in advance, since the garage is quite smal.

Some colleagues and me stayed at the Royal SAS in the heart of Copenhagen for 2 nights following a conference. The hotel was modern, extremely friendly toward visitors, and centrally located. Every recommendation made for dinner/activities was spot on and their breakfast was amazing. The rooms were not a typical smaller European room, but gracious in space and comfortable. If you are going to Copenhagen, stay here.
