Owner description: Amalienborg offers two royal experiences that let you get close to royal history through the last 250 years. In Christian VIII’s Palace the museum offers an insight into royal life past and present. You can see the private chambers of former kings and queens and, on most days, there is also admittance to the royal reception rooms (check periods at our website) from the museum. In Christian VII’s Palace you can walk in the footsteps of the royal guests, and be shown round the magnificent rooms where grand festivities are held. You can book a guided tour of Christian VII’s Palace in the ticket office of Christian VIII’s Palace or on our website. Remember that every day at noon you can watch the changing of the The Royal Danish Life Guards.

“Tour the grounds but save your money”

The changing of the guard in the square is free to view. Don't waste your crowns to go inside, because it's just a museum of modern stuff and the royal family (these Americans were unimpressed). Instead, go to Rosenborg Slot, the old castle, which is much more historical.

“Time it to see the Changing of the Guard”
Reviewed 10 May 2012

The castle is nice to see, not really impressive. We timed it so we saw the Changing of the Guard at 12:00 and that was fun. Across the way is a garden area with sitting areas and a bit further down is a kiosk with souveniers and a bathroom.

“Just from the outside...”
Reviewed 8 May 2012

We were too late for a tour around the insides of the castle, but nevertheless our evening walk after a nice meal and a visit to Nyhavn was quite an experience. While we were wondering whether the flag was up because the queen was at home (it is like that with Buckingham Palace), several dark cars drove by and right into the nearest gate. And we caught a glimpse of the crown prince, who - believe it or not - gave a smal wave and a smile to us before vanishing inside the building. Suppose the next time we are visiting, we see a lot more of the interior, if not from the royal family...

“Traffic disturbing the royal castle”
Reviewed 27 April 2012

How can you allow traffic to pass by the royal castle. I am stunned. It is disturbing the beauty. This place should be more serene and the area between the harbor with Amaliehaven and Marmorkirken should be closed down for cars.
