“noisy”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

I was excited to experience a hotel with unusual charm, however, as it turned out a room on the waterfront with a lovely view also included being above the restaurant Salt that has employees who like to party under your window until late hours. The employees also smoke down below your room and the smoke carries up into your room. Being the weather was unusually hot, there was a need to have the window to your room open 24/7 as there is no air conditioning in the hotel, an amenity that I found to be unusual, but was told that it's rare that AC is needed in this part of the world. The hotel service was so so, I expected a little better of a hotel of this status. They had no record of my changing my reservation from 3 nights to 4 nights. I had to produce my records in order for them to accommodate me for the additional night - otherwise I would have been booted out onto the street for my fourth night. This tells me there is inconsistency in the hotel reservation staff. On the plus side, the location is good, the night bartenders were personable and made a great martini. Probably would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Dont stay on the first floor and stay away from the restaurant area on the waterfront side.

Things you must be aware off when you book this hotel:

1. No air-con in any room
2. Small window in each room, unable to create a draft
3. A lot of construction work on the sea side of the hotel where work starts at 0700 each working day
4. Unable to sit outside for breakfast due to lack of staff
5. Breakfast room is small and crowded and hot

Comment from staff in the reception "we are not superhuman"

Room Tip: Book another hotel

After staying in the Phoenix Hotel a week earlier, the Admiral was a welcome change. The location by Nyhavn was perfect, the rooms were charming, the service was excellent, and the restaurants were exceptional. The only thing missing mid-summer was air conditioning. It seems there are a precious few hotels in Copenhagen that have air conditioning, and it is typically not necessary. But this was an unusually hot summer. We booked the hotel through Booking.com and got a very good rate. Don't hesitate to stay here. It was a real treat and a wonderful "Copenhagen" experience.

Pluses: nothing was too much trouble; excellent location for Nyhavn, boat trips, Christianborg slot; rooms have sofa and seating, desk, fan, plenty of storage space, mini bar, hairdryer etc.; nicely decorated with character; comfortable beds; ice cube machine. Negatives: had to keep asking for tea bags; noisy at front of hotel in summer when windows open; no air conditioning (although fan).

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel as better view and less noisy in the summer.

Admiral is situated perfectly by the water in the very center of town. Staff are very friendly and the reception gave us very useful ideas of what to do while in town. All the attractions are within walking distance.

On checking in I found our room was not as I thought I had booked (I had booked through a third party) One of the staff on reception soon sorted this for us and was really pleasant and helpful. So nice to have this attitude and to have everything sorted immediately without a fuss. Our room was impeccably clean and I simply could not fault it. Great views over the harbour. The reception staff were very helpful again when we wanted to go on an excursion, it was booked immediately for us for the following day. Previous reviews have mentioned the heat, apparently this level of heat has been exceptionally unusual in Copenhagen and actually everywhere was hot. Windows could be left open all day and this was fine, we got some cooling breeze through and fans were provided which we used on a low level at night. By our third night the heat started to subside and everywhere was becoming far more pleasant. The reception staff were always very polite cheerful and helpful. Getting to and from the airport was easy, just a short walk to the metro which only has one line at the moment and it took us straight to the airport terminal in about fifteen minutes. Very quick and easy. The hotel is in a nice upmarket area very close to everything. Perfect.

Enjoyed our stay at the Admiral in Copenhagen. We were there in July during a time when the city was experiencing unusually hot weather, and the hotel has no AC. A bit hot, but we learned that if you open the front door and the window, you do get a decent cross ventilation to cool the room down. The room did have a fan, thank goodness. Hotel is in a perfect location. Hop on, hop off bus and boat were right outside hotel. Strongly recommend, just be aware of no AC.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Next door to royal residence Amalienborg Palace and just a short walk from Nyhavn, this imposing 200-year-old former granary warehouse is one of the largest hotels in the city, with 366 rooms - but don't let that put you off. It may not be boutique but big can definitely be beautiful. Beyond the two cast iron canons at the entrance is a neon-pink bar (great for a pre-dinner tipple), while guests retire to rooms showing off classic Danish touches such as teak furniture, low ceilings and original wooden beams. Best of all are the panoramas across the water towards the city's shiny Opera House and Christiania: a view fit for royalty. ... more   less
