“comfortable place great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2014

I stayed for 3 nights with my teenage daughter. We loved the place. It was clean, comfy beds, lovely breakfast. Our room was set out as a twin as requested. It faced the inner courtyard and so we could not hear street noise. The decor is basic and traditional. Staff were all very nice and helpful. I like their method for booking. You send an e mail and pay on arrival. Nyhavn is a lively street but this hotel is on the quiet side.

When we got there the hotel had just reopened after Christmas and it was pretty quiet. But the staff were super friendly and helpful with everything. They also explained that this spot is really bustling in the summer at peak season, but that in winter things are a bit quiet. There didn't even seem to be a lot of red light action going on, too cold maybe! So therefore noise mentioned by other reviewers was not a problem. Nonetheless it was warm and cosy and had everything we needed. Tour bus stops right outside and the gourmet pizza place just down the dock was delicious, plus it was super close to the central shopping area...we were able to walk everywhere and it was lovely to stay right on the canal, even though the boats seemed mainly covered for the winter. I'd love to see this area in the snow...would be so pretty!
The hotel rooms definitely also had a kind of youth hostel vibe (something reviewers have mentioned before) and there were things that were a little weathered looking (bathroom is pretty 70s, for instance). For the same amount of money (in the off season, early January) we did wonder if we should have upgraded to more of a fancy hotel setting, if you know what I mean!
But the room was big enough for two friends traveling together and the separate bed we had requested (twin room) was there, as booked. All in all, the experience was lovely and certainly very personal, thanks to the staff.
This hotel is highly rated because of the wonderful staff, the care taken and the gorgeous location. The fact that it is an old seamen's hostel - we loved this idea - is really cute and the exteriors are characterful. There are touches (porthole in the elevator, brass plaques on the doors) but not much of the naval aspect really remains in the interior though, unless you count the piano in the dining room. If you're looking for more of "hotel" vibe, you may be better off elsewhere in the winter. If you're coming for the summer though, I imagine this place would be bustling and exciting and couldn't be beat.

We stayed here in July and had a great week exploring Copenhagen. The hotel is located by the canal and is within walking distance of all the major sights. We had a room facing the canal and although we were there during the jazz festival we did not find the room at all noisy. The room was clean with a comfy bed and a decent sized bathroom. Breakfast was the usual continental style, nothing fancy but plenty available. Staff were pleasant and helpful and there was a computer available for guest use in the reception area. Hot drinks were also available throughout the day, free of charge for guests. If we were to return to Copenhagen we would certainly use this hotel again.

Positives: Friendly front desk, very delicious breakfast, very unique and interesting area.
Negatives: TERRIBLY loud and cold through windows. Inappropriately and routinely drunken Danes can be heard by the canals in to the wee hours of the morning--This is NOT a kid-friendly neighbourhood after hours. Be forewarned, this is VERY small hotel and small rooms and tiny elevator by North American Standards.

My wife and I stayed at this great hotel from 12-15 December. We have been travel to Copenhagen before Christmas nearly every year since 2001 and have tried a lot of different hotels. This is definitely the best hotel for a price of DKK 1000/night!

The rooms are fairly basic but big enough to be comfortable. The room was clean and fresh look and if you order a room with a canal view you'll get an amazing view of beautiful Nyhavn (see my attached photos). There are free tea and coffee all day and night.

If I was to mark the hotel down on anything it would be that the breakfast is quite basic and there was no minibar in the room.

We will definitely stay here again next year!

Svein-Magne Tunli from Bergen, Norway.

Perfect if you're a tourist seeking a budget hotel in a good location. Accommodation in Copenhagen is expensive. We paid about US$170 for the night at Hotel Bethel. This is good value for a clean hotel in a great location. The hotel has an old school booking system: you have to email or call. No deposit needed.

Getting to the hotel from the airport is easy. Take the metro (15 mins) to Kongens Nytorv then walk for about five minutes. The hotel is located at Nyhavn (top end of the quaint boat harbour). A central location is important in winter (when the weather can challenge the most intrepid traveler!)

We arrived quite early in the morning and were told we could go into the dining room to eat breakfast while they made our room ready. Very happy about early check in as the weather was lousy. Reception staff was very friendly (they also gave us some good advice on where to go for dinner).

I always find photos helpful in reviews so I've added a few.

Thanks fellow tripadvisors for the tip to stay here!

We spent two nights before, and one night after our cruise at Bethel.

We knew Copenhagen was a more expensive city, which you need to keep in mind when choosing a location.

We were able to save money arriving from the airport and using the clean, fast, and easy to understand metro and the map on the website. However, double-check your flight times to make sure you can use the metro (our departing flight was too early am for the metro to be open, so we had to buck up for a taxi).

Staff: The hotel staff, no matter who we encountered were delightful, friendly, helpful, and spoke excellent English. They helped us map out sightseeing days/routes, booked our transport to and from the cruise terminal, printed out anything we needed (there is a computer in the lobby free for anyone to use, they print from the desk), and stored luggage for us we were not using while on the cruise.

Check in: With check-in/out times, although obviousy enforced, they were more than welcoming letting us come and use the lobby space, including the complementary breakfasts, water, coffee, computer, and bathroom even past check out time. This was of great use for us, as it gave us more time to sight see, whiel not having to worry about lugging around our stuff, or finding a washroom.

Area: Nyhavn is STUNNING and it was great to be part of the action, but still quiet in the hotel. There are a ton of restuarants within walking distance (our favorite was the open faced salmon sandwiches at Leonore's-look for the lilac awning). You can also drink openly on the street, so grab a beer from the corner store accross the street and stroll to the many seats on the harbour. Also at your doorstep are canal cruises (we were on a boat within 15 mins of checking in-fantastic!). Hans Christian Anderson store is down the same block. Shopping mall and metro about a 5-10 min walk away; so are banks and money exchanges. The main shopping street (Stroget) is about 10-15 min walk away. We also walked (30-40 mins) to Tivolli gardens - meander your way there, stopping to shop along the way. About 15 min walk got us to the Christainsborg palace, a beautiful large public park where the famous Little Mermaid statue is and the folkloric fountain (forgot the name). We were also lucky to stay during the Jazz festival - Nyhavn is a 'happening' place to hang out.

Rooms Etc: We stayed in the large double room, and the corner room. Honestly thought the large double was the better value - two large windows facing the street with a beautiful view. Similar view with the corner room. Corner room had larger sitting area. Both rooms relatively large, including the bathrrom, and clean. Furnishings, at best, are boring and uninspiring. Rooms are fairly spartan-you're paying for location, not luxuy. Windows are able to fully open in the hot summer, but pretty solid noise proofing at night for such a busy area. Ask for a higher floor for best views.

Breakfast: For an included breakfast, this was great! Coffee, tea, juice, water. Boiled eggs. Apples/oranges. Yoghurt. Small pastries. Cold cuts and cheeses (I still salivate over the Danish blue...).You can also sit near the windows for a partial view of Nyhavn.

IN SUM: Excellent location, friendly staff, great value for dollar

Room Tip: Large double room likely best value; select high floor for optimal views
