“Worth a look . . . but not my kind of church”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

This church is worth a look because it is unusual and because to the statues. Not at all my taste but interesting to see and the cathedral of Copenhagen, the site of royal weddings and such.

“Greek Temple Shows Off Christus Statue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2014

What an interesting church!
In the early 1800's, Neo-Classical style was the fashion. So the town fathers chose to have their new cathedral built in the style of a Greek temple.
In the place of honor at the front, where there would have been a statue of Zeus, stands a giant statue of Christ, and it's a masterpiece. (For Latter-Day Saints, this is the original of the Christus.) Along the sides, in niches where there would have been more statues of Greek gods, there are Thorvaldson's Twelve Apostles. (Again for LDS, replicas of all will be placed in the new Rome Temple Visitor's Center.)
Even the statues are done in the Neo-Classical style, as Thorvaldsen studied sculpture in Rome.
It turned out that the town thought their perfect new Greek-temple-style cathedral was not impressive enough, so they added a tower. The tower was built in a 15th century Italian style!
We arrived just after a baby christening. The family was all dressed up, the beautiful child was in white, and there were red roses for a spot of color for the photographer. It was great to see this local church still being used by the faithful.

“Simple but beautiful”

It is a simple but beautiful church. The big marbel statues of Jezus and the twelve apostels are beautiful in this rather simple church.

“Stunning yet simple”

Very plain church but an ideal setting for the statues of Jesus and the Apostles. Information provided on laminated sheets so no need to have a guide. Well worth a visit, no charge made but leave a donation in the box.

“not just a wonderful building”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2014

We dropped in at 7pm on Sunday. A choir of about 20 people were singing gospel songs. We were invited to join in. It was great fun and a valuable experience. The candle lighting was lovely.
