If you have an interest in industrialisation, social history and development and beer you will love this, if you do not - stay away as you will be be bored rigid, go to the shops. For the former this is a brilliant day out explaining so much more than just brewing but also the Baltic ethos of benevolent capitalism, shared intelligence, global expansion and beer! Every social scientist should be sent here for three months it would benefit the brain and challenge the liver. And the beer? Brilliant. Super restaurant to finish off with a mind boggling choice of world beers and of course Carlsberg's own very tasty offerings. Loved it.

The Carlsberg brewery complex is undergoing a lot of reconstruction, but once you’ve found the Exbeerience it’s well worth the 30 minute walk or free shuttle bus from town.

There is a self guided tour including the world’s largest collection of unopened beer bottles & the stables with their very handsome horses - free carriage rides are available 1200-1400. This is covered by your 100 dkr admission fee and a free Pilsner is included!

We’d recommended adding the beer tasting (80 dkr) and the guided tour (60 dkr) on top. A guide takes your group through 4 very lovely Jacobsen/Danish/Belgian beers, most of them over 6.5% abv. This is enough to get most people nicely merry for the tour, which adds details on the family’s lives, their contributions to science, art & architecture.

Practicalities: student discount to 70 dkr on admission.
Tours say they take 35 mins but really take an hour, consider spacing them out a bit with lunch.
Long way from centre of town, build up your day by visiting Frederiksborg Castle, the Zoo or having lunch in the meat-packing district.

Though most of the area was currently under construction - it was interesting to see the history in the buildings around the campus. Even though you can walk around some of the area on your own, we decided to spend the few extra dollars to take the private tour. Was glad we did as the tour guide was very knowledgable and was open for any questions that we had and we were able to see things you couldn't see on the grounds on your own.

Better value than Guinness in Dublin and greater variety.
An excellent guide at the tasting experience, three fascinating beers. A lot more historical stuff than I expected. Lovely horses and a great value bottles in the shop. A fantastic visit.

I am not a beer drinker - the appeal for this experience for me was from the history, development of technology and the science (background in microbiology). We had already toured a lot of the other touristy sights in Copenhagen and decided at the last minute to head out to Carlsberg (we had seen to be tour on the show “Travel Man”) but I’m very glad we did. I found it very fascinating. It didn’t convert me to drinking beer but it was well worth the trip.
