Owner description: Kronborg Castle towers above a very narrow promontory between the coasts of Denmark and Sweden. The renaissance castle stands majestically with its spires, towers, columns, sandstone and copper roofs. Kronborg Castle is a magnificent renaissance castle and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. This year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. Kronborg Castle is marking this occasion by celebrating Shakespeare's immortal play Hamlet with a cocktail of theatrical adventure, drama and festivities in the magnificent halls of the castle.

The history of the castle and its strategic position at the narrowest point between Denmark and Sweden has been very well presented. You get a really interesting glimpse at Danish history - combine that with the literary significance of the setting for Hamlet and you have yourself a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours!

The location of the castle, at the end of Southern Jutland is very beautiful next to a small harbor. Go and visit the outside that's very impressive, but going in is not worthwhile and a bit disappointing. Instead make sure to visit the M/S Museum next-door. An architectonic gem and great museum for all ages. Don't miss it !

It is a beautiful castle, well kept but I think they make too much of a fuss about Hamlet. If you put Shakespeare and Hamlet out of your mind and focus on Kronborg and it's role in Danish history, you won't be disappointed.

On its own, devoid of literary context, this would be an ordinary castle. But its association with Hamlet makes it worth a visit. There is a guided tour that involves a re-enactment of Hamlet's story which is worth taking. Most impressive for me was the location by the sea: this gives the castle a special atmosphere that gets the imagination going. It evokes comings and goings of the various characters, the oscillation between contemplation and the bloody end of Hamlet.

Well worth the 45 minute train ride to reach it from Copenhagen. Both castle and train are free if you bought a Copenhagen Card. The setting for Shakespeare's "Hamlet", it is a dramatic view and tour.
