Owner description: This historic castle was constructed on three islands and is surrounded by lake and beautiful gardens. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. A tour through the museum's many beautiful rooms is an encounter with kings, queens, nobles, the bourgeois, events, and epochs, which have all shaped the country's history and development from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The museum was founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg.

“Palace full of incredible ceilings”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

If you do one day excursion from Copenhagen, make it Frederiksborg Castle. This is the largest palace in Scandinavia and is surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens and a huge lake. It was the royal residence of King Christian IV and was built on the site of an earlier castle by Frederick II. There are four floors of renaissance & baroque rooms to explore, with Christian 4th's monogram visible everywhere. A highlight is The Great Hall, which has one of the most extravagantly carved ceilings you will ever see. You can get lost for hours checking out the fine detail. Different trades such as cannon makers, clock makers, people picking fruit, polar bears and other exotic animals. It is all there. The Kings audience chamber has an innovative trapdoor in the floor through which the King was raised and lowered into the room. There are also many huge paintings showing the coronations of former monarchs.

“Royalty in the countryside”
Reviewed 31 July 2014 via mobile

The approach to this palace is a treat, and the interior is a feast for the eyes. Take in the Hugh interior, the history and the art. My only disappointment was the modern exhibitions at the top. Can't really understand why it needs a Bob Dylan collection- it felt out of place to the rest.

If you have the time, enjoy the stroll in the park, then jump on the little ferry boat to get a great view from the lake, then jump off on the other side, enjoy an ice cream, and finally make your way back up to the station. A great half day trip from Copenhagen!

“Ask for the audio tour”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

We took the train here one morning and found it worth the time and money. The palace is large and filled with a lot of art that makes it overwhelming. The free audio tour is good. Just ask for it when you buy your ticket. The town close to the palace was a very nice place to have lunch.

“Castle and Lake”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

Hillerod is a short train ride from Copenhagen on the S-Tog, and the castle is a very short bus ride, or walking distance, from Hillerod station. There are beautiful courtyards before the castle proper. The audio tour guide is free, but there is a general entrance fee. It is a beautiful castle with rooms arranged in time period from medieval through to Victorian (or Danish equivalent).

The grounds are very extensive too.

Worth a visit.

“Mesmerising”
Reviewed 18 July 2014 via mobile

30 mins drive from Copenhagen city centre.
Its an amazing, mesmerising and peaceful place. Most beautiful garden I have ever seen. This place occupies some strange serenity which fills your heart.
I spent 3 hours there, plucked some apples from the apple tree and enjoyed the scenery.
Free parking at Sunday.
A must see place if you are around.
