Owner description: This historic castle was constructed on three islands and is surrounded by lake and beautiful gardens. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. A tour through the museum's many beautiful rooms is an encounter with kings, queens, nobles, the bourgeois, events, and epochs, which have all shaped the country's history and development from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The museum was founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg.

“Royal residence”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

Frederiksborg Slot was built as a royal residence for King Christian IV and is now a museum of national history. The palace is located on three small islands in the middle of Palace Lake next to the Baroque style garden. Adults pay a €10 admission.

The castle is very interesting – whether you are interested in 17th century Royal Danish history, art of those times or simply the amazing craftsmanship. You should allow 3 hours for your visit.

Lunch at the nearby Restaurant Leonora Christine is recommended.

“One of our favorites!”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

We only got to spend 3 hours here and it wasn't enough. Outside there are formal gardens, a cafe, fountains, and walking trails. Inside there are about 50 rooms of treasures on three different floors. The Royal Chapel is stunning and it's organ is from 1620. They offer an audio guide at the entrance that is very informative. It is covered under the Copenhagen card. This place was one of our favorites in Denmark and I would try to see it if possible.
It is easy to get to via train from Copenhagen. You can take the train to Hillerod station and then catch a bus which drops you across from the castle

“Worth a special trip”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

I spent a few hours here with a tour group. Plan to take the time to go through the rooms slowly - even the staircases. The portraits of the current royalty are so large and real, you feel as though you've actually met them. We didn't get to tour the gardens.

“Favorite thing we did in Copenhagen”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

It is a bit north from the city center, but well worth it! The Copenhagen card covers the train to get up there, and the entrance fee. We visited a few castles in our trip around Scandinavia, but this one was our favorite. The inside is so beautiful and intricate, as well as the breathtaking gardens! A definite must!

“Amazing castle and gardens”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Out of the way location in Hillerød, but definitely worth a visit. Allow 3 hours for your visit. As well as the huge palace, there are very extensive gardens. Palace closes at 5 pm, so give yourself enough time!
Nice day trip from Copenhagen when combined with Helsingør (Elsinore) and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
