Owner description: The royal burial church of Denmark and a UNESCO world heritage site. Experience a magnificent church and an architectural masterpiece. 1000 Years of Danish history are gathered here under beautifully decorated vaults and in dark crypts. Here 39 kings and queens of Dnemark lie buried. Roskilde Cathedral is just 20 minutes away by train from Copenhagen central station.

A beautiful cathedral which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, due to its importance in Danish history. The interior of the cathedral is not the most opulent, and I would say despite its age the cathedral is actually quite modern in its simple, geometric looks. A must-see if you take the time to visit Roskilde.

We visited the cathedral with friends in June, Europeans as well as Americans. We all enjoyed learning about the kings and queens buried in the church and enjoyed the organ concert at noon. The cathedral also contains a museum chronicling the buildings history, construction, and restoration over time. A walk around the exterior is a must as you will find a lovely view of the Roskilde fjord.

We first visited this church on a gloomy day in November, when it was dark, or almost so, outside. That produced a wonderful atmosphere, which was still apparent on a bright sunny day in June, with many more visitors about. This is simply a wonderful church. The range of styles in the royal tombs takes ages to see and appreciate, while the little museum is also full of interest. There are some nice misericords (not pointed out in the guide book) and dignified architecture and monuments. Take time here, it will repay you.

Roskilde Domkirke is a must-see if you are in the area. Many kings and queens of Denmark have been buried here, and it is full of rich history. It is incredibly peaceful and beautiful inside. There is a quite a good little museum inside as well. You receive a free guide when you enter to help decipher who is buried in each chapel.
