Owner description: The royal burial church of Denmark and a UNESCO world heritage site. Experience a magnificent church and an architectural masterpiece. 1000 Years of Danish history are gathered here under beautifully decorated vaults and in dark crypts. Here 39 kings and queens of Dnemark lie buried. Roskilde Cathedral is just 20 minutes away by train from Copenhagen central station.

We arrived when it opened, and the organist was practicing (or perhaps he just plays for tourists) and the atmosphere was wonderful. It was very interesting to see a gothic cathedral in brick rather than stone, and the white paint made it surprisingly bright inside. We learned more Danish history from the tombs and the excellent guidebook that comes with admission.

From the outside the church looks quite nice, in the classical Denmark building stile of churches during the last centuries. It can be spotted that the church consists of several building periods (as the chapels were added only later, after the finalisation of the main building).
However (and this is the reason why I would rate it with one star only): I intended to visit the interior of the church which lists itself in the rank of the Notre Dame in Paris on a Saturday. In spite of being listed as one of the UNESCO world heritage sites, it was closed to the public (due to local weddings). And on Sundays it is only closed in the afternoon for some hours. Thus I could only get a glimpse of the church's interior (the organ looks quite impressive) via looking from the exterior to inside during a short wedding break. Disappointing for a UNESCO-site...

It is unfortunate that you were not able to visit the cathedral. However, since the cathedral is both the royal burial church of Denmark, designated a UNESCO world heritage site as well as a functioning parish church the cathedral can be closed due to the occasional wedding or funeral. This does not happen every weekend and the majority of weekends throughout the year the cathedral will be open. We find your review a bit unfair as we always encourage our visitors via our official brochures, advertisements, webpage and a growing number of published guide books to consult our opening hours to see if there are changes prior to visiting the cathedral.

The resting place of so many of Denmark's royals, this cathedral is worth exploring. I liked the outside tomb of a sailor king whose family knew he wouldn't want to be cooped up in a chapel. The organ is astonishing and the altar glorious. Take time, sit and --if there aren't too many tourists!--absorb the peacefulness of this sanctuary.

We weren't able to go inside but took lots of pictures from the outside. The church sits in a historic square. Beautiful construction. Don't miss it.

The cathedral in Roskilde is truly amazing. There may be greater and grander cathedrals out there, but in Denmark for sure not! And the history of the place is something worth having a look at, even on a sunny day as it were when we passed through on 11 August. I'd go back!
