Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Experience the unique joy of traveling along a railway line in your own powered self-drive railway vehicle, called a RailCruiser. The RailCruiser is a fully automated, state of the art petrol-electric four seat self-drive railway vehicle, with comfortable seats and unobstructed views. It is fitted with clear drop down waterproof sides. Departing from Mamaku Railway Station travel 10km through a majestic 1000 year old native forest, past rolling pastures with views out over Lake Rotorua to Tarukenga Railway Station. After a short break at Tarukenga whilst the RailCruisers are turned, you return in your RailCruiser back to Mamaku. Cruising along at 20km/hr, you can listen to the audio tour. This is the ultimate way to experience a railway.

“A World First Experience”
Reviewed 8 March 2012

Jess and Kieran were fantastically enthusiastic and went out of their way to not only explain all the safety features and sights to see but answered the endless questions that I had. I guess this is a world first for self drive rail cruisers. That’s right no driver necessary, no experience needed, and no licences required, just climb in and set off on a round trip of 19 km on an old disused railway track. The journey takes about an hour and a half including the safety briefing. This attraction is in stage one of its development and later during 2012 the track should be extended as far as Nongataha with the passenger terminal relocating to the end closer to Rotorua. Further extensions are planned with rail bikes being added as an additional attraction. Whatever stage the development is at check this one out.
