Owner description: Experience the unique joy of traveling along a railway line in your own powered self-drive railway vehicle, called a RailCruiser. The RailCruiser is a fully automated, state of the art petrol-electric four seat self-drive railway vehicle, with comfortable seats and unobstructed views. It is fitted with clear drop down waterproof sides. Departing from Mamaku Railway Station travel 10km through a majestic 1000 year old native forest, past rolling pastures with views out over Lake Rotorua to Tarukenga Railway Station. After a short break at Tarukenga whilst the RailCruisers are turned, you return in your RailCruiser back to Mamaku. Cruising along at 20km/hr, you can listen to the audio tour. This is the ultimate way to experience a railway.

At 20 kms/hr in a small carriage. Very comfortable for 4, automated carriage bar the need to manually brake at each end of the track. The 10 km ride was pleasant, there is the typical clack clack as the "train" trundles along the tracks - bit loud but you soon get used to it. Very nice views of the forest (where the Canopy Tours operate actually) and local scenery. Will appeal more to adults than kids who might find it a tad boring after escapades like the Luge. Clearly there has been a massive effort to restore the railway line, would be amazing if it ever gets extended right into Rotorua so, while quite expensive for a train ride, it's well worth it in terms of supporting the attraction as well as being a look back into a bit of local history.

The kids spotted the billboard for this as we drove in to Rotorua. Decided to find it a go so had no real expectations. Was well organised and interesting in terms of the history as well as cruising through bush and farmland. Definitely a sedate activity. If you're in to trains, then this is for you. The kids gave it 7/10 and 9/10. It is expensive compared to other Roturua activities - $190 for a family pass.

This is a great setup, a disused railway line through native bush and farmland. Dinky rail cars are quite fun.

If you are wanting something exciting, this isn't for you. If you want a pleasant tootle it's spot-on

It's well run, but can sometimes feel a bit pedantic on the safety angle. It's a longer safety briefing than most other adrenaline filled death defying adventures in rotorua.

It's expensive, but I can see why, it's a big operation to run and maintain.

So if you are into trains, go for it! If you aren't, maybe hold off. If I was a retired rail buff with pockets of money I would give it 5 stars

The kids thought it was about 3 or 4 out of 5

What away to enjoy New Zealand forgotten railways, I found it most enjoyable having your own little rail car which was heated on the return journey. It's one of the best trips through New Zealand's native rain forests I have ever taken.

I am looking forward to taking this trip again during summer, when we are not in the middle of a mid winter's storm, so I can take some more photos of the fantastic panoramic views.

What a brilliant way to spend an hour or so. Cruising around in your own private rail car seeing some of the beautiful countryside. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip through the native bush. I have already decided to return to do this again in the sun as the rain made it hard to get good photos.
