“a Memorable Restaurant and Soirée”
Reviewed 5 March 2013

On a ski trip with some friends to Are in February 2012 some local recommended us this hotel's restaurant and we could not be happier (we repeated on another night)
The place is very cozy and the hotel looks lovely surrounded by snow.
The déco and lights give the restaurant a great romantic-cool-rustic-magic ambiance.
The service was super-efficient, attentive and friendly.
The food (meats on a hot stone and delicious sauces) was incredible.
The drinks, wines and cocktails with fruits for apéro were amazing.
I strongly recommend this spot.
We did not sleep there but it looked a clean good value comfortable cute hotel.

My sister and I spent a long weekend at Karolinen and we both loved it. Its a lovely little hotel just outside Åre, the direct bus which is right by the entrance of the hotel only takes a few minutes and is free with your ski pass. Karolinen has beautiful views of the lake, cozy rooms and a great breakfast in the warm and homey common area. But what truly makes the hotel is the wonderful staff! They are very sweet, helpful and very professional. They made us feel most welcome with helping us with all our requests and gave us excellent tips. Would highly recommend Karolinen to anyone that wants a cozy, true Åre stay. Also try the restaurant where you grill your own meat on hot rocks. Its excellent. Definitely going back to Karolinen!

We stayed at Karolinen hotell for 3 nights for a short trip skiing in Are.
I liked the hotel decor, it is simple and homely which makes it very welcoming, the hotel manager is very helpful and the staff is lovely. Here is a little breakdown of different features for this property:

PRE-TRIP EMAIL COMMUNICATION
Before our trip I needed help to arrange our transfers from Ostersund Airport to the property so I emailed the hotel: I had a quick response which enabled me to prepare my holiday stress free. I had several email exchanges for other questions as well as well as to book the restaurant: every time I had prompt and helpful responses.

ROOMS
The room is simple and spacious, well maintained and pleasantly decorated. The radiators could be easily regulated to the temperature we liked so that was an added comfort. The bathroom was very large and we had a big jacuzzy bath tub, a separate shower, heated floor, as well as a sauna. All for ourselves! The beds were twin (I think there is no double on offer) but they could be pushed next to each other at least to be close. Despite being right near the stairs and under the reception (the reception is on the first floor) we found it very quiet.

LOCATION
The hotel is out of ARE town down from the main road. It is next to the ski-bus stop which is included in the skipass and quickly takes you anywhere in town and beyond; also the flygtaxi stop from the airport is just outside.

The only downside when arriving from the airport was that the only way down to the hotel was via steps that were completely covered in ice and snow so we could not go down there (definitely not with suitcases). We had to take our suitcases along the road to the car entrance which was not far but it was a bit scary to walk along the short stretch of road to reach it as there is no pavement.
To get to the ski bus stop is easier and also the ski-storage is next to the stop at the top of the dive-way so it was very handy because we never had to carry our skis too far.
The bus comes every 30 mins and the nearest ski area is Bjornen (just a few minutes away): this is probably the best to start from in the morning because it is not as crowded as starting from right the center of town (queues can be veeeery long at busy times).
The bus also runs at night so it is possible to get to town in 5-10 minutes to spend the evening there.
I think we only took a taxi one late evening and I believe it cost us arond 120 SEK (about £11). It s not that far.. but Sweden is very expensive.
All in all I think it was a perfect location: away from the hustle and bustle but well connected thanks to the bus.
Not suitable however for those who prefer to be right in the centre of town or within walking distance.
Beautiful landscape with views of the frozen lake from the windows.
Facilities within waking distance are: a small supermarket (next to petrol station) and Are chocolate factory.

RESTAURANT
The hotel has an in-house restaurant which specialises in hot stone cooking: you are served a selection of meats (and side dishes) which you cook yourself on a special (very) hot stone at the table.
There is a log fire and it is very intimate and romantic though there were also groups there so it is not just for couples. We chose to have 2 dinners there out of our three evenings. If you go for more than one night you can pre-order different food as opposed to the hot stone though we really liked the hot stone so we did it twice.
Breakfast is served either in a nice room at the front or in the restaurant itself. Both very attractive places to have your meals. Breakfast consisted in a buffet of cold cuts, freshly baked bread, jams, cereals, boiled eggs etc. Simple but quality ingredients and satisfying.
If having a cooked breakfast is a priority for your while on holiday then this offering may not be appealing to you.

OVERALL
We liked Karolinen hotel mostly for its warm and welcoming feel, the genuine hospitality of the management and staff, the little touches and the unpretentious ambiance.

Had a great stay here with Peter showing us the ropes of the town. Don't miss the "hot rock" dinner here its fantastic. We had access to their computer with internet 24/7 included in our rate and breakfast every morning was a nice touch. Great area to visit and bond with the locals. We were here for a ski contest (JOI) April of 2007 and had a blast!
