“So Far So Good...”

I've stayed here many times, especially during transit. It has nothing much to offer safe for the fact that it's right in the middle of Kiruna with the movie theater next door and a supermarket just two minutes walk...

So I arrived to Kiruna and accidently booked our hotel for a different city (my mistake). Luckily Scandic was able to save us from sleeping at the airport or the visitor center lobby. This hotel isn't the most glamorous of hotels, but it gets the job done. The rooms were clean, but not modern. I didn't have any trouble with the staff here at all and the wifi signal was strong throughout the establishment.

The hotel was perfectly ok with a small gym and nice sauna. Rooms were fine. But everything in Kiruna seems to close at weekends so there are very few places to eat, including the hotel restaurant which does not serve lunch. The hotel staff recommended the unattractive sandwiches near the front door. Not good !

This was not the happiest of stays. The previous reviewer suggested that the staff need training but it is also true that they need more of them. The hotel seems to be the meeting place for a lot of youngish Kiruna people so the bar was constantly busy with them and a full complement of guests. BUT... there was only ever one person on duty, usually not over competent as well as being frazzled. And you could not charge drinks to your room!
The rooms were barely adequate and sparsely furnished with cheap furniture. They seem to have a policy of only providing one set of towels per double room. Because of a problem (see below) we changed rooms on our second night and this room, like the first one, only had one set of towels. What is that about?
The big horror story though was that there was a function in the hotel on our second night, with a VERY loud rock band pumping out volume and room shaking beat right below our room. When i went to reception to complain, they told me that a) they could do nothing about it and b) that they were full and could not offer another room. They also said the music would stop at 1230. I pointed out that their first responsibility is to provide their hotel guests with the means to have an undisturbed night's sleep. They then "found" another room, two floors higher and away from the centre of the hotel. This room was better but the insistent beat was still present and did not stop until 0245am.
This hotel should be avoided if possible. Sadly it seems to be the only big hotel in Kiruna but I would recommend visitors to trade down a star or two and find somewhere offering decent service and a good night's sleep.

On arrival we were greeted by a hapless receptionist who was trying to sort out an issue with an issue checking in the couple ahead of us. It took him 20 minutes to sort out a very simple problem, while a queue formed. He then sent us to the wrong floor for our room. Not a good start.

The room itself was fine - comfortable and warm, with nothing fancy, but it had everything we needed.

There isn't a great deal to see in Kiruna but we headed out to find some food, only to discover that everything was either booked or closed at 7pm on Saturday. We ended up back at the hotel's average American restaurant and had pretty poor quality food, after being told it was fully booked and they couldn't squeeze us in despite us being willing to go away and come back later they wouldn't give us a time when a table would be free so we just hung around until one was available.

After dinner we decamped to the bar and fancied a game of snooker, but the table was booked in three hour blocks so we couldn't get near it.

At reception we asked for information about the bus to the airport the next day, only to be told it doesn't run on a Sunday, which was incorrect so we ended up shelling out for a taxi, which wasn't cheap.

The Scandic Ferrum is well located in Kiruna town, but the staff need much better training to help guests enjoy their stay. Disappointing.

Stayed here a few times in deep snow! and darkness! Good to get out for a walk, see the town. Note the hotel is one of the best places to eat in an evening and its still seen better days. As the town is shutting down and moving down the hill not much point in refurbish now I suppose. LKAB want to mine under the current location. Hotel tired, but staff are friendly and the hotel is generally clean. Had a conference room for meetings which worked out well.

The hotel is in the center of the town which is good, and a short ride to visit the "ICE HOTEL"!!! The rooms were very "tired" and our room wasn't clean, looked like it hadn't been used or the bed cleaned with the amount of dust on the base!! The pillows were so small and thin we had to ask for a lot more to get 1 decent pillow, the heating only worked for 1 hour and then couldn't get it to come on again!! The bathroom was to be desired also, nowhere to put anything. We saw the cleaner the following morning who had a mop to clean the shower and our bedroom floor with, it was awful, the mop needed cleaning or a new one, hence the shower tray was not nice!!! View was good as it was pouring with snow and it was like a postcard view!!

Room Tip: Room facing the "play ice area" and go high i.e. 6th floor away from the elevator
