I stayed here with my friend because it was the cheapest accommodation in Kiruna. We are used to roughing it, but it was difficult paying almost €60 a night for a room with such basic standards. Malfaltens is essentially a community college with part of the student lodging rented out to travellers. The inside of the building is quite dated, but it is neat and clean - the small common room in our part of the building felt sort of like an old folks home. The room itself was incredibly basic - two comfortable beds, an inaccessible desk, a wardrobe, and a toilet. The showers were located on the floor below us - they were powerful and always hot and included a sauna - but having to traipse up a set of stairs and down a corridor to get there was pretty inconvenient. The decor was somewhere between quaint and depressing - it was cozy, but the smashed light shades gave off a horribly glaring light. There were no reading lamps which was annoying. The hostel is located about a ten minute walk outside of the town and we stayed there as little as possible - it didn't really invite you to stay. It suited our needs as a warm and somewhat comfortable place to sleep, but it was very expensive for such a low standard. A few other brief observations: 16:00 is a very late check in time, the hostel is situated beside Camp Ripan where we got a good view of the Northern Lights, the reception was locked in the morning so we just left our room keys in the room.
