Very nice and clean rooms with a designer's touch. Having the washing basin separate from toilet and shower is actually a plus because two people can do "their thing" without getting into each other's hair. Reception staff was friendly and helpful (we got advice on where to dine, and how to deal with the slightly weird parking rules in the street outside the hotel), and everybody spoke English exceptionally well (we thought, even for Sweden). The breakfast buffet was large and varied, the only thing I missed (hint to the manager :-) in case he/she is reading this) was a coffee machine to make *real* coffee (espresso or latte) instead of filtered coffee. Overall the Aveny was a pleasant surprise and very good value for money.

Dear guest. Many thanks for your respons. It made my day. Actually in this moment a WMF coffee machine is ordered and we are waiting for it. So hopefully for your next stay we have more coffee to display. Many thanks and very welcome back one day. Sincerely Mattias Lindberg.

Stayed at this hotel four nights in February 2012. The staff were both friendly and helpful and the hotel has a prime location in the city. But the interior of the room is to say the least weird. Who has got the idea to have the wash basin in the hall, outside the bathroom? - embarrassing and ill.

We, a family of three stayed one night at Hotel Aveny in July and we loved it. It is located in the centre of Umeå.
The room was a bit small but we could easily fit an extra bed. It was clean and the design was modern and fresh. We also liked the fact that there were two sets of dumbells and a workout DVD in the room. Bed was comfortable and the small bathroom was clean.
The breakfast was set up really nicely and there was plenty to choose from. I appreciated the fact that I could order in oatmeal. Everything was fresh but then again we tend to eat breakfast as soon as possible in the morning.
One great thing about this hotel is that you get to work out at Formtoppen, a well equipped gym located in the same building. For instance there are at least 5 treadmills (with small tv-screens),
If you want to say something negative about this hotel then that would be that the wi-fi is really slow. Also, the TV was broken in our room.
All in all we would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Mvh Mattias Lindberg

The attempt to give this hotel an uber-modern atmosphere (don't be fooled by the pictures on the website) somehow got out of focus. It felt like staying in a funky student room instead, with a sink in the bedroom and a cramped shower/toiler area that floods when talking a shower. That being said: beds are good, breakfast is OK, service is average. As noted by others below, the wifi connection is unreliable (it simply dropped for two days). Although the price (especially in Sweden) does not feel wrong for what you get, you do not get what you expect from the website. I would not return here.

The Aveny is a modern and chic hotel in the heart of Umea. We found the room design to be efficient if not a bit cramped. The bed was comfortable and the dumbbells were a nice touch. The staff at the hotel were extremely helpful and provided a painkiller for a headache while I was visiting. Breakfast was very well appointed - one of the most extensive I experienced in Sweden - and the eating area was comfortable and nicely decorated. I'd recommend as a good hotel offering decent value for the money.

Three stars for terrible wifi in the rooms and common areas.
4.5 stars if you don't care about wifi.

I happened to need wifi, so was frustrated by being told it's working, it's your room, your computer, it's being fixed, etc. It would work for a minute and then stop working. The common areas were even bad. Frustrating.

Two onsite restaurants were good, but somewhat expensive, but that's expected in Sweden. They had a great free breakfast buffet on the days we were there.

Umea is a nice quiet small city with lots of biking and good bus service.

We were traveling to Umea for a conference at the University. No other reason to travel here. Read the reviews of the hotels on Trip Advisor. Tried to pick the hotel that had the fewest complaints. Most said The Aveny was nice but ...rooms were not serviced, baths were too small, cannot control temperature, etc. I am amazed that travelers here have such low expectations and gave it high rankings. This hotel would barely qualify to be one level above a Motel 6 in the US. And at a much, much higher price. The best thing I can say is that there is plenty of hot water, an easy walk to town and bus central and I do feel safe and secure. 1st room was way too small. No place to put clothing or even 2 modest size pieces of luggage on the floor, no closet, 4 hangers, sink in main part of the room. Complained and got a larger room. Day staff is quite pleasant but evening staff surly. Free internet is intermittent ( it may be fixed tomorrow) Is there another option, an internet cafe ...so I can do business over the Internet? Resounding NO. So much for the service. Yes, breakfast is included but it doesn't make up for other inadequacy. Draperies do not fully darken room and since it is sunrise at 2:00 am this time of year we are awakened by the light. I knew we were in trouble when checking in ... the street window of the lobby had a large crack and the air vent above the point of check-in was filthy. Rooms are not much better. Mold in shower even after complaining, carpets stained as is some silly cover they keep putting at the foot of the bed and I keep putting in the closet. My husband the scientist is not letting me walk anywhere without my flop flops. Linens and towels are quite clean although bed and pillows are way too soft, even for this Yank. The marketing dept/ advertising agency/ web master should get high marks because this sows ear is a sows ear. And to add insult to injury there is a compliment/complaint card with the regional managers email. I got an email response "On vacation until July 9" It is only June 13th. I hope the manager is vacationing at a better hotel than this one.

Dear guest. Well it seems not have been the best impression on you from the hotel. We will take all your feedback as a lesson and do our best to do everything better in the futute. A personal meeting might have helped the situation. But even I need vacation sometimes. On behalf of the hotel and Umeå you are very welcomed back.
