“Old World Charm in Malmo”
Reviewed 20 November 2007

A weekend away in Malmo is now a much more attractive and affordable option thanks to easy access from Ryanair flights and the marvelous train connection to and from Copenhagen.

The Savoy Hotel is a fine place for a weekend break.

First up is the location - directly opposite the the main railway station, and only a short walk from the bars, restaurants and shops in the old town. Not that you need to venture too far away, since the hotel itself has a a very good restauarant and pub ( the Bishops Arms, no less) in situ.

The hotel itself is full of old world charms, and the plaque in the lobby lists some of the famous clientele from - well, probably bygone days. Still great reading though. The rooms are large, spacious and well serviced, while the in-house sauna offers an opportunity to soak away the pains of the day.

Breakfast is a buffet in the restauarant, and is first class (also doesn't finish too early, like some early rising Scandinavian hotels).

Price ? Nothing in Scandinavia is cheap, so, by local standards, the Savoy can be reagrded as very good value - either for a business trip or a social weekend.

We had booked a romantic getaway which should have included roses, champagne and bathrobes. But when we got to our room none of these things were there. The front desk was very unflexible and would provide the "romance", as it was not registered in their computer. The room was nice - although a little a worn (as was the rest of the hotel). But they need to look up customer service in the dictionary.

The Savoy was once THE place to stay, and there's a plaque in the lobby listing some of the famous guests who have stayed there. While it's a little worn and no longer the most luxurious place in Malmö, this was still a nice place to stay and part of the Elite chain of hotels in Sweden. My room was small (like everywhere else in Sweden) and didn't have a view, but was clean and quiet. The staff was helpful and very friendly. The rates are reasonable. Breakfast is included and served in the restaurant downstairs; there is also a pub in the building with one of the widest selections of beers and whiskies in Malmö. The location can't be beat, right across the canal from the Central Station and a 5 minute walk to all the action at Lilla Torget. There is a canal boat tour right across the street from the hotel, and they rent bicycles there for 100 SEK a day, which is a great way to get around Malmö, which is flat as a pancake. Would definitely stay here again.

We travelled to Malmo on an extended weekend break and stayed at the Elite Savoy Hotel. The location of this hotel is excellent just across the river from the train station, tourist information centre and bus station. Despite this it was not a noisy location. The hotel is also just a 2 minute walk to the main squares and top of the pedestrianised shopping streets. There are lots of restuarants in these areas. The hotel was very good although we do think we got the smallest room in the hotel! However as we got such a fantastic price for our stay which included a full continental breakfast we thought we got an excellent deal. As the weather was extremely hot we requested a fan which was provided free of charge with no deposit needed. We asked for a safety deposit box and again this was free of charge and no deposit needed. The staff were friendly and helpful. We arrived at 10.45 in the morning and were able to check in immediately.
We flew into Sturup Airport, we recommend taking the Flygbussarna - which is a bus into Malmo (they also go to Lund) it was 95SEK each, each way and they take credit cards. This was an easy stressfree way to get to Malmo. The bus dropped us off directly opposite our hotel all we had to was cross the road.
We recommend Malmo as a destination and this hotel.
