“Good hotel whit amazing breakfast”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

A wonderful hotel in the center of Malmo. Better location can not be found, walking distance to everything downtown. Nice room with a "home environment". Staff extremely helpful and pleasant.
Three small negative things:
1 hotel had no air condition.
2 No refrigerator or minibar.
3 You must be young and agile to operate safe, which is bolted to the floor.
All of this is forgiven when you get down to breakfast in the morning, it was the most amazing breakfast imaginable with many local delicacies.
Will return to this hotel again with joy.

Room Tip: You can ask for room with minibar.

Having lived in Malmo in 2001 I knew of this hotel's reputation but unfortunately it was always out of my price range. This summer the hotel was offering a promotion that offered the rooms at very reasonable rates if you booked 21 days in advance, not refundable. I jumped at the chance...and I was not disappointed.

The hotel is centrally located so most things can be walked to within 5 - 10 minutes. The train station is also a quick 6 minute walk.
The staff were helpful and very friendly. When I requested a quieter room for my second night, they upgraded me to a superior room at no extra expense. The decor is lovely, rooms large, linens are cotton, beds very comfy and overall a lovely hotel experience. Breakfast is excellent with lots to offer for a variety of tastes. Fans were available upon request to help with the heat in the rooms (no air con). Free wifi if you ask the front desk for the password.

The only negative is the amount of noise that enters the room from the street . I was there during a heat wave so needed to keep the windows open. Noise from the crowded restaurants were easily heard until the early morning hours as well as the recycle truck that comes at 7am to dump the glass bottles from the restaurant next door into the truck (not pleasant to wake up to). When asked for a quieter room that faces the inner courtyard, you then hear breakfast noise although at night it was a bit quieter.

Overall, a very pleasurable experience and I highly recommend staying there

Room Tip: Request a room that does not face the street but the inner courtyard

WELL DONE:
Polite, friendly and helpful staff wherever and whenever we had contact with them. Excellent car park service (pick-up-service directly at the counter) and a tasty, rich and good of choice breakfast in a very quite atmosphere. Directly located in center of Malmö, so all places of interest can be reached easily by foot or bike. (Renting a bike costs 60 SEK half a day).

Generous room and bath, XXL-king size bed, but oversofted and economic lifetime has come to the end.

Wi-Fi and Tea/Coffee/Water free of charge.

Unfortunately there are no more “Brownie points” – here we go with the

NO GOs:
as a complete contrast to this ambitious, upmarket 4-star-house.

To my opinion THE ESSENTIAL of EVERY stay at EVERY hotel these points are a MUST:
a clean, well maintenanced room where you can get re-creative sleep
and also moderate levels of temperature and noise; specially during
night times. These points are definitely improper to the room we got
accommodated:

1. There's no AC available. So you get the choice at night: closing
the windows for getting a bearable but even not sleeping adequate
noise level and get over 28°C in less than two hours even at
midnight. Or you leave windows wide open at bearable but not
comfortable temperatures for sleeping, but can't sleep re-creatively even
wearing earplugs. I've asked the receptionist at first day of our stay
for AC and her only succinct reply has been: "Summers in Sweden usually
are not hot. After sunset it'll cool down but we can borrow you a fan.”
We did spend incredibly noisy nights giving us the feeling being placed at
Copenhagen's Tivoli amusement park including not always good smells
of cooking of surrounding gastronomy of your house coming inside
caused of the opened windows. A stay in the afternoon in summer in the room is simply intolerable.

2. In the room, and specially at the bathroom there has been a lot of
obvious stress marks (black scratches on the wall and partially
painted over unprofessionally, worn out furniture, and a heavy
leaking mixer tap). But most disgusting are clear signs in a lack of
cleaning and maintenance of the bathroom: see attached photos speaking for
themselves: a lot of dark mould formation at the silicon at a lot of different places there.

I’ve pleased the hotel management for a statement and the answer sounds to me really silly and I have to admit after getting this reply without any try of concession I can’t take them seriously anymore.

Hotel’s manager statement:
“I have been up in the room to look at it and I'm sorry to say that you are
right. The bathroom is very bad. We have now changed the silicon around
the bathtub and made a major cleaning of the room and bathroom.”

...and about the heat in the room:
“we are a City hotel and normally it's quite in the room when the windows are closed. We are now experiencing a heat wave and I'm the first to admit that we are not equipped to handle it. We are an old hotel and do not have air condition. We have a cooling system but it's not powerful enough.”

But biggest bad joke to me has been that I got blamed that I had to insist at the counter getting changed the room, suggesting then problems would have been solved; specially after I got first this succinct (see above) reply at the counter after we’ve checked in.

When I get to a hotel room having such a bunch of these unacceptable things I have no doubt at all, that this won't be the only room looking like that. To me it's a result of an insufficient QM in the house and this is specially to a 4-star-hotel unacceptable. At the latest BEFORE delivering a room to new guests room-maids do have to realize that here's something definitely wrong, otherwise they're used to this "standard" we've enjoyed. If you look closer at this hotel you see a lot of corners do have clear stress marks and the need of refurbishment. Money would be much better invested in eliminating these things than putting overpriced B&O TV sets in the rooms instead of quite enough ones as e.g. Samsung or Panasonic; this way they only pretend a high level they can’t keep.

And additionally: welcome in 2014! Prices per night at Master Johan are not a discount equal to 1990's standards, they are the 4-star-prices of this century, so I also do expect today’s standards that makes it possible getting a re-creative sleep every day of the year, also at summer; otherwise they should close during this period and use time for refurbishing. If it’s
only possible to offer a calm room get windows closed permanently, the 4-star-standard of this century even in Sweden in this case is having an AC or at least a real efficient cooling system.

So my conclusion in this case:
if a hotel isn't able to ensure the "basics" even I can expect to a today’s 2-star one, all other things around don't help much feeling in good hands and is definitely worth only a "one-of-five-star-rating" because the basic tasks didn't get fulfilled. To me it’s inexplicable how this hotel can get here so much good and very good votes.

Room Tip: well, to be honest: search for a better hotel in Malmö even if you have to go a few steps by foot to...

The hotel is absolutely beautiful, the location is great, the rooms are stunning, large with big windows , Bang & Olufsen TV’s with audio input for MP3 players with great sound, big comfortable beds and a superb bathroom.
The breakfast is brilliant yummy and very relaxed with a good selection of fruit cereal, breads, pastries, cold meats and cheeses and freshly cooked eggs, bacon and sausages as well as omelettes and pancakes to order.
The internal courtyard and shared areas of the hotel are relaxing, cool and truly beautiful, and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Bike hire works out very cheap from here and was a lot of fun.
However I found it difficult to sleep for 3 reasons:
1. The room is right next to the Lila Torg square which at the weekend plays loud music until 2am/3am. Our room was right next to the street and as it was so hot that we had to keep the windows open which meant hearing the loud music and people milling about. Again in the early hours I was woken by delivery vehicles.
2. The room only had one blackout blind, which meant light came flooding in from the streetlights outside.
3. It was a heatwave when we visited which was great but the rooms are boiling, this probably isn’t an issue most of the year - but be aware if it’s hot and ask for a fan – we weren’t offered one.
Ps - The burger place on the same block called Surf Shack is great

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms which face the road as they can be noisy

Master Johan is a hotel furnished with lot of attention to details and with good taste. However our room seemed to have worn out a bit. Since the summer was exceptionally hot, it was really good of the hotel staff to have provided with table fan that saved our sleep. We felt the bed was a bit small but that didn't interfere with our comfort for couple of days we stayed there. Breakfast was nice with good variety in the buffet. The hotel is at walking distance from almost every good thing to see in Malmo.

Room Tip: Don't forget to ask for the fan in case it gets warm.

We recently returned from a 3 night stay. The people who worked there were lovely and the atmosphere was charming. The location couldn't be beat. Unfortunately we were mislead by hotels.com in thinking the hotel had in room climate control. However, the hotel does not have individual air conditioning in the rooms and in fact our rooms were sweltering. The front desk apologized over and over again citing a very unusual heat wave and loaned us fans. However, it was so hot that we couldn't sleep very well. Additionally the two rooms that we had did not have bath tubs, as we were informed and only showers that managed to get water all over the bathroom.

What a wonderful place to stay in Malmö! The location of this hotel is really great, with a short walk from the central train station, and on the door step of any restaurants, shopping and a great park. But, the very best part of this place is their closed in courtyard. It sets such a wonderful, relaxing atmosphere, which is further improved by the very friendly staff, clean, spacious rooms and a nice breakfast. The only draw back is that there is no air-conditioning, so on a very hot days, the rooms can get a little toasty. But, to remedy that, one only needs to throw open those beautiful big windows and take in the sounds of a wonderful Swedish summer in the city. Just be aware, that if you are facing the street, those sounds will include the very early morning delivery trucks. We love this place, and will most definitely stay here again.
