“Old nice building”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

It was almost like going back in time when I entered the building. A lot of marble and big and dusty lamps in the ceiling. I liked it.

The rooms where not great. If you get a room in the new parts furthest away, you can count on bad wifi connection.

Over all - the hotel is OK.

The hotel had its best days at the beginning of XX century, I am not saying it had not beeen renovated since these days, however it is very, very tiredl. The reception and the common area is old style and not adjusted to modern world (cables sticked with a tape to the floor), the rooms are very small and extremely basic. For this price I would expect the room to be at least clean, but it was not, because all the furniture remember 1956 or so, the bathroom was up-dated in 1975 or so, and the windows are for sure from the beginning of XX century. The only hope brings breakfast; rich, tasteful and fresh, if not the cold of breafast room it would add to the hotel rating. But all in all - for this price, no matter how expensive is Sweden, it is the hotel for desperates.

Have visited Kalmar every 3 years for 35 plus years. 3 stays at this hotel - and sorry to say it is starting to go downhill. This visit was for 4 nights. To begin, the Reception Desk personnel were often not at the desk and when they were, they seemed detached with little interest in the guests. There is an elevator which is good, but we have a lot of luggage & our floor had an additional set of stairs that had to be negotiated with all the luggage. Believe me, there are no Porters. The room was smallest we have stayed in there. Tiny closet with a fabric shower like curtain, & 4 hangers. Only window was small and in the sloped ceiling so unless you are well over 6 feet tall, you couldn't see much. Housekeeping needs attention. Carpeting looked a bit questionable. No facial tissues (kleenex) provided. 3rd day there the soiled towels were never removed from the shower floor or replaced with fresh towels. (Beds were made that day so we can only guess that the housekeeper forgot the bathroom.) The bathroom faucet in basin was broken & frequently squirted either us or the walls. On the positive side, the location is excellent. Right on the square and only one block from shopping and about a15 minute walk from Kalmar Slott (castle). Breakfasts were very good with a lot of variety - and the ladies who service that room do an excellent job. They are on it! The Scottish Pub (in hotel) is also a good place to go for a quiet drink or a good plain meal. Total cost for the 4 nights was $826. Next time I'm going to try the newer hotel by yacht harbor. Will cost more, but hopefully be less nonchalant about service than the Calmar Stadshotell.

Room Tip: When you arrive, ask to see the room before you take your luggage up. Check faucets & amenities...

Though the rooms are small and quite basic, they are quite comfortable. Attractive, though not luxurious, public rooms offer pleasant seating in the lobby. Excellent breakfast buffet. I would definitely stay there again.
The staff was helpful and friendly.
Nice Scottish pub connected to it with good beer, wine, and food.

Location is excellent, close to shopping and culture. I also liked the breakfast menu, but the big room that it is served in is a bit cold. The staff is proffessional and friendly. Rooms are a bit warm in my taste, but if you open the window it works fine. Shampoo and such feel low budget and smell much so make sure to bring your own. We ate lunch, dinner and coffe here, and that was good quality. Mini cooler in the room is cold and nice.

Room Tip: I have stayed two times here and I liked 3rd floor better than 1st floor.

We stayed at this hotel one night during the holiday in December. We booked a 'superior' room which was by far the most expensive room available in Kalmar at the time we booked. The room was a huge disappointment though: very very dated (not one that had been renovated, it seemed), very old and worn furniture with stains on everything. Very sparsely furnished room also, and not in a good way. We had the distinct feeling that we had been given the very last room in the hotel, which seemed rather strange since we didn't see a single other guest during our entire stay, not even during breakfast. The front desk staff barely spoke and it was difficult to find someone when we first checked in.

On the plus side the hotel building is very nice and the location was excellent. The breakfast really saved it however - very good quality and extensive buffet, and as mentioned we had it entirely to ourselves. The breakfast room was also very nice.

Overall however, and huge disappointment and I would not come here again.

The staff at this hotel are just incredible. Very friendly, accommodating and service minded. I spent 6 days teaching here and I was in heaven. The food is so nice. The lunches are very generous and the flavors are just right. The morning and afternoon snacks for conference guests are the best I have seen anywhere in Europe.

Calmar overall is a city that sticks out in Sweden. No matter where you go you meet people that are outgoing, friendly, curious and warm.
