I have a lot of experience sailing my own boat and rented ones in different parts of the world.
For the discovery of the north western coast of Scotlan, a group of friends and Ipicked Selkie Explorer, chartered by its owner Celia and assited by her first mate Dean. It has been much more than discovering beautiful sceneries and wild life. Celia and Dean let us take charge in the planning, navigation and sailing as much as we wanted, withsafety as the only limit.
They offerred us the most delicious and elaborate food I have ever eaten on a boat, including edible flowers from Celia’s own croft, and were always caring about the comfort and pleasure of each of us.
We ended the trip on the Isle of Eigg where both are living to catch a grasp of the local real life which was highly entertaining and a great night ensued.
Finally, it was more than a fantastic sailing trip, it was an amazing human experience, and there was a lot of emotion for all sides at the time of our departure after a wonderful 8 days.
5 mates and I just spent 8 days on the Selkie with Celia and Dean sailing out to St Kilda and around the islands of Harris, Skye and Eigg along with others.
Difficult to say how much we enjoyed the tour other than fantastic.
Every thing was brilliant, the boat, the sailing, the crew, the food (there should be a Selkie Explorers restaurant) and last but not least the scenery.
For someone more accustomed to cruising the Med this was just the tonic.
Have to again say that Celia and Dean were fantastic, welcoming, relaxed, skilled, knowledgeable and just great company and the Selkie is a great boat extremely safe and very well laid out and could easily handle high latitude sailing.
I have no hesitation in recommending Selkie Explorers to anyone else regardless of sailing level - would will have a great time and expect to sail with Celia again hopefully with the family next time.
Have just completed a marvellous journey on Selkie Explorer departing from Mallaig and ending up on the Isle of Eigg after 8 days in the Outer Hebrides, Skye and St Kilda. Celia the owner of Selkie and Dean her First Mate were wonderful, cooking up delicious Scottish fare and giving the 6 of us most of the chance to sail the boat, of which we did a lot of sailing including making it to the Island of St Kilda and an overnight sail back to Harris. Anchorages were all very beautiful and I can only buy highly recommend sailing up in this remote part of Scotland, and can just add that with Celia and on Selkie Explorer you simply can't go wrong!
My partner and I joined Celia and Dean for 8 wonderful days on Selkie. We made it to St Kilda which was incredible! And many other beautiful islands, Mingulay, Cann, Eigg and more. Celia and Dean looked after us really well, the food was great and they worked hard to keep us happy and include us in the sailing. We saw so much wildlife and got to experience the wildness and beauty of the small isles. Can't recommend this trip enough!
Had a fantastic day out on Thursday with Celia and Pam. Celia providing the transport and Pam leading the Yoga on the beach. A lovely relaxing yoga session followed by lunch on 'Selkie'. Perfect.
Just did 5 brilliant days with Celia, Dean, and Dionny aboard Selkie. We covered over 250 nautical miles, visited Eigg, (accompanied by 12 dolphins swimming in the yachts bow wave) passed Rhum, Canna and Skye to reach North Uist, stopping overnight at Lochmaddy (couple of sneaky pints in the bar before dinner) before navigating the Sound of Harris, passing Pabay ( spotting minke whales) and out to St Kilda, 40 miles out into the Atlantic where we stayed the night and walked round the village. St Kilda was evacuated at the St Kildens request in 1930 and sailed round the sea stacks to see the amazing sea bird colonies (1 million birds) gannets, skua, puffins and fulmar. Next day after a great dinner cooked by Dean, we had a great sail to Mingaly (as in the famous boat song) Rounding the headland we were greeted by the site of 300+ seals hauled up on the beach making a hell of a racket. Some of the seal pups were curious and came right up to the boat. Last day we sailed back towards the mainland, through the Small Isles. We crossed the path of a luxury cruise ship whose passengers I could only feel sorry that they were not sailing with us on Selkie. We spent the final night at Inverie, Knoydart . Had a slap up dinner at The Old Forge of local scallops and fine scots beef. Parting next day at Mallaig was sad but a least I could look forward to a fantastic rail journey back to Glasgow on the famously scenic West Highland Line (see the Harry Potter and Trainspotting movies)
Some quick points
Selkie is a safe fast and capable yacht, ably crewed and one of the most comfortable I have been on.
You don't need any sailing experience at all but I'm guessing Celia will have you on the helm before long!
Don't worry about sea sickness, people rarely get it on a sailing yacht
Dean provides great home cooked meals. This included a full roast lamb dinner and all the trimmings, cooked while at sea and for the benefit of those who already sail, close hauled! The lamb and salad were from Celia's own croft on Eigg and washed down with fine Eigg brewery beer. All inclusive means all inclusive!
If you feel you want to get there quickly, anchor up and have dinner. Dionny will tweak the sails, take the helm and then Selkie will really fly.
Let me say that if you are cap and blazer wearing, gin and tonic, red ensign hauled down a dusk, Captain Bligh sort of a sailor Selkie is not for you. However If you like wilderness, wildlife, great company and sailing amongst some of the most beautiful islands on the whole planet Selkie is what you are looking for.
