“muddy fun”
Review of Hockley Woods

Hockley Woods
Reviewed 24 February 2014

I am lucky enough to have these woods nearby. A recent visit from my sister, my 8 yr old neice, 5 & 3 yr old nephews soon prompted a visit & much fun was had. Parking free weekends & bank holidays. If you don't want to spend lots of money this is perfect, don't forget your welly boots :-)

Great for a bit of fresh air with animals or kids. Lots of logs to climb on and places to run about and let off steam. Can follow specific colour coded walks devised for the length of time it takes to do a circuit, but found this a bit confusing when walking around - have to know your way around a bit as woods are extensive. Childrens' play park is very good and a hot tea van near the entrance is very welcome after a bracing walk. Activities are planned in the summer months sometimes which is good - but the only down-side is pet walkers who leave the doggies' calling cards around for children to step in. Not the fault of the woods!

Great for pet walkers or cyclists or anyone who likes walking. The park is fun, even for those over 20 years old!

Great spot, lovely to walk around; buggies able to follow paths. We took some family kids out with cameras and they loved it.
Lose one star for the amount of wasps near the (very well equipped) play park

Nice woodland, not too 'perfect' i.e. no man made footpaths etc. Dog walkers are considerate and saw only a couple of 'poos' but on the whole a very clean wood. Could do with being a bit more clearly marked out - as in walks, distance, estimate walking time etc. There is also a good park near the car park for children to play in. The car park is well laid out with ample parking. Toilets here too which are very clean. Great mobile catering van locted by the car park which is reasonable in price and very welcome after a walk. Do great bacon butties, baps, hot chocolates and loads of other things - crisps, chocolates, ice creams etc. We spent an hour or so here walking a smallish dog with 2 young children and everyone had a great time. We invented games for them to play - i.e. they had to spot 3 things (squirrel, conker and something interesting) and they got a treat if they did. if going during the week - there is a small charge for parking. free on saturdays, sundays and bank holidays. Whilst paths are not man made we did see someone on a mobility scooter charging around and parents with buggies so don't be put off if you have either of these.
