“Trendy fun hotel, good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2012

We stayed in "the balcony" room for 2 nights. The room is average sized by European hotel standards with a funky vibe. The bathroom was tiny, but nice toiletries and good water pressure in the rain shower made up for it. The breakfast was great and it's a nice perk to have the hotel bar downstairs serve food til fairly late by Stockholm standards.

It's located in the high end shopping district and a reasonable walk to everything. We would stay here again.

Spent 3 nights at the Story with our son and daughter-in-law (2 rooms). The hotel is within walking distance of shopping areas, docks, Old Town Stockholm, Olympic Stadium and many good restaurants with sidewalk or indoor seating. We had a couple of problems that the staff responded to pleasantly and effectively. The toilet leaked when flushed and, within less than an hour, The Story had us in another room of equal view and quality. It was Friday and that night, even though the hotel bar was on the main floor and we were on the 5th, we could hear the music - not so much that we couldn't go to sleep, but more than we wanted. We mentioned it the next day, Saturday, and that night the music in the bar was played so softly I felt sorry for the bar patrons. The staff tend to be young and casual and are also very attentive. They reflect well on The Story's training program or hiring process - or both. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms offer a street view, not a city skyline, but it's a clean, European street. We cho...

This is definitely a great hotel for the younger crowd. There is no lobby and the amenities are a little lacking, but it's a very hip and stylish boutique hotel. There is complimentary breakfast with great music. There is also a downstairs bar and for people who want something quiet, this is not the hotel for you. It's probably one of my favourite hotels I've stayed at.

The staff are all attractive and helpful. I booked a large room and found it quite comfortable, it had a little seating area. The internet is really spotty and sometimes worked in the room, but I usually ended up sitting by the bar to use the computer, which was actually pretty relaxing.

Our room was located on the fourth floor on the side of the building. A staircase leading down to Birger Jarlsgatan (a main street featuring high end clothing stores and bars for the young and beautiful) was below our windows and the music from the bars reverberated down this side alley. Closing the windows helped but I was grateful I had brought ear plugs after reading other reviews of the property.

The good:

* the hotel is centrally located (one subway stop from the train station, a ten minute walk to
Gamla Stan or Djurgarden, two to five minutes to the heart of the shopping district) in
Stockholm, one of the most beautiful cities in northern Europe.
* the price (Stockholm isn't cheap)
* comfortable beds
* generous breakfast and newspapers
* industrial-strength coffee
* coolly pleasant multilingual young reception staff
* pleasant and down-to-earth cleaning staff
* witty recordings in the elevator calling out the floors
* good quality toiletries (Face Stockholm) in the bathrooms
* free Ramlösa bottled water in the room fridge every day (if you remember to hang the sign
on the door when you leave for the maid to clean the room)

The bad:

* centrally located (every upwardly mobile yuppie under 30 and on the prowl for company
hangs out in this neighborhood after work and until the wee hours on the weekend)
* NOISY (a bar on the ground floor and several bars in the neighborhood). Bring earplugs and
a sleep mask!
* the hallways are painted a dark brown and the carpets are also brown. Signage is in
turquoise. Lighting in public spaces is like East Berlin pre-1990.
* there is no reception per se. You have to phone an office extension to get the staff to meet
you. In fairness, they were often loitering around downstairs, but weren't there when we
arrived.
* the hotel tries to pass cheap off as chic. The pictures in the room are pieces of paper glued
on the wall (copies are available for purchase), there's a clothes rack in the room in place
of a closet with approximately six unremovable hangers on it, the piece of plate glass dividing
the shower stall (no bathtub in our room) from the rest of the bathroom is about a meter wide
and does little to stop water from flying all over the room no matter how careful you are,
the bare lightbulb in the bathroom hangs from a piece of orange industrial wire as though
awaiting a light fixture to call its own, the headboard was an old front door hung horizontally
behind the two twin beds, the tiniest of nightstands attached to the base of a floor lamp
* the most bizarre collection of light switches in the room (which one has to stay on so I can turn
the light on in the bathroom? and which ones operate the different sets of track lighting in the
ceiling?)
* when communicating with the hotel prior to arrival regarding two special requests I had made,
I was informed that "they would see what they could do", but was told that because I hadn't
booked the room via the hotel website they wouldn't guarantee they would do anything.
* upon arrival, the staff informed me they were giving me an upgrade when in fact I got the
room I paid for, but not in the part of the hotel I requested. Had I not brought earplugs I would
have complained.
* if you don't hang the "yes please" sign on the door when you leave in the morning, don't
expect your room to be cleaned
* because of the hotel's desperate appeal to the "hip and sophisticated", the hotel draws some
"hip and sophisticated" guests who after an evident all-nighter of clubbing in the
neighborhood bars think nothing of talking extremely loudly and using four letter words with
alarming regularity and pride in the hotel dining room during an otherwise quiet and calm
Sunday breakfast.

In conclusion, this is not a hotel for families with young children. It is not for the novice traveller. If you are confident about your ability to handle difficult situations and pretentious people patiently, coolly and with a dollop of humour, or you yourself are difficult and pretentious, then you might enjoy this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a higher floor (four and up) and preferably facing away from Riddargatan or the side alley.

I cannot say enough about this place. We arrived after a very special stay at a B&B in Amsterdam (the two abodes are in very different categories - both lovely), and my expectations were so high that I was ready to be disappointed because of the reviews about noise. We spend three days at Story, drinking in the super cool decor, welcoming bar and delicious breakfasts. I think I could have camped out in the "Backyard" with the Irish Setter all day, rather than see the city. We stayed in the Bath Room, which was perfect. Yes, a bit small, but who cares? It was such a fun adventure. ***I am super sensitive to noise, and love to sleep, and was NOT bothered at all by any noise.*** The staff was lovely and helpful for restaurant suggestions. We couldn't have asked for more. Congrats to the designers, and we wish you every success! I will always remember and compare other boutique hotels to Story. Just wonderful.

Room Tip: Loved the Bath Room. No noise issues at all.

We stayed a weekend in a balcony room on the 5th floor in this trendy hotel. Location is 1 stop by metro from the Central Station, and right in the middle of a nice area with boutiques and fine restaurants. The breakfast was average, yet dinner was unexpectedly very good. Although we had a room on the 5th floor, there's a lot of noise on the street side of the hotel (at least in the weekend) - would advise to have a room at the backside. Interior is a bit dark, yet funny - staff has apparantly been made aware of some of the comments here on TA, given their overall friendy attitude.
