We stayed at Hotel Skeppsholmen on our last leg of our trip through Scandinavia. About a week before we arrived, the hotel contacted us by email to see if we needed any help in arranging airport transfers (we didn't though it was nice they asked) and to see what our plans were for dinner on the second night (It was Easter Sunday and many restaurants would be closed). They offered to make reservations elsewhere or at their own restaurant (we chose the hotel's restaurant).

The hotel is situated on Skeppsholmen, a small island about a 10 minute bus ride from Central Station (or about a 20 minute walk over the bridge). The buildings are converted Navy barracks and feature simple and classic Swedish design. The bathrooms are sleek, feature rainfall style showers, a very unique sink, and Orla Kiely bath products.

The staff at the front desk was friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable as were the staff of the restaurant. We arrived around 1 p.m. and were able to check in early. While getting our bearings, we had lunch at the restaurant (sitting outside for lunch means sandwiches and not the full menu from the inside). It was a glorious warm spring afternoon and we enjoyed our sandwiches and beer and scored the very elusive seats outside.

The breakfast is delicious and the choices are many.

Getting here: If you arrive in Stockholm at Central Station, take the 65 bus located outside the main entrance. You can buy tickets inside the station. The ride takes 10 minutes and drops you off right in front of the hotel. Better than paying for a taxi. If you don't have that much luggage and it is a nice day, you can walk here in about 25 minutes.

PROS
--------
Friendly staff
Excellent Service
Great location*
Comfortable beds
Nice bathroom facilities
Free wifi*
Tasty breakfast
Superberb restaurant
Quiet at night
Close to the Museum of Modern Art
Accessible by public transportation

CONS
---------
*Great location but the walk in to the city center and Gamla Stan take a while. If you are not used to walking be prepared to pay for a cab (not cheap). Not a problem for us since we're from NYC and we walk everywhere.
*Free wifi - but the signal is not as strong in the rooms. (there is wired connection available and if you are near the lobby/lounge you have faster speeds)
* As this is the only game in town as far as food on the island, during nice weather, visitors to the island take advantage of the restaurant. So it does get crowded. As hotel guests, you can of course make reservations at the restaurant if needed. I guess I wanted the place all to ourselves and the other hotel guests instead of these day trippers :)

Room Tip: You can't go wrong with any of the rooms! Be prepared to walk a lot though.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write this review and what a lovely one to receive.

My team and I are very glad that you choose our hotel for your stay in Stockholm.

Very pleased to read that you enjoyed everything from our Scandinavian interior, the service from my team to our Restaurant Långa Raden and the Swedish cuisine we serve. Our terrace is only semi open but from the 10th May it is officially open for summer and we will have a full menu and you will also enjoy our complimentary breakfast on the terrace.

We are very lucky to be situated on this lush island but still in the city centre with all attractions and sights within walking distance, we also have the charming ferries and the Stockholm bikes which is also a great way to explore Stockholm on.

I hope we will have the pleasure to welcome you back next time you visit Scandinavia and Stockholm.

Best,

Joachim Olausson

Chose Hotel Skeppsholmen for our first visit to Stockholm and couldn't be happier with the choice. It was perfect - surpassed our expectations. Location was perfect for walking into town or hopping around on the local ferry. Will definitely return.

Dear Guest,

What a lovely review to receive this sunny Sunday.

My team and I are very glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us.

We are very lucky to be situated on this green island in the city centre with all the different sights within walking distance or as you write, use the charming ferries. Another great way to get around Stockholm is the city bikes which you can rent at our Front Desk and we have a stand next to the hotel.

I hope we will have the pleasure to welcome you back to our Eco labeled hotel next time you visit Stockholm.

Best,

Joachim Olausson

We spent a three night break at this hotel: its location on a quiet island across the water from Stockholm's major tourist attractions (Tivoli on one side, Gamla Stan on the other, with frequent short ferry trips to both) makes it a gem for travellers who prefer a little peace and style on a city break. It is a little quirky as the buildings are converted from a naval barracks, but this gives it a unique atmosphere and interest. In good weather you can sit with a beer or coffee overlooking the beautiful view of the city, watching the boats coming in and out of the harbour. The Moderna Museet, one of the top modern art museums, is 5 minutes away on foot, together with the specialist Architecture Museum. Food is excellent in quality and diners choose to come here from the city for a special meal. The hotel also provides for small conferences and business meetings.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the upper floor of Building 2, away from the building with reception/restaurant. if you are offered an Upgrade when you arrive, check the room first and think about whether it's really necessary - we moved from our Upgraded room after the first night as it was too noisy, despite being a Junior Suite! However, there are some gorgeous Junior suites in Building 2. The standard rooms are small and really only for singles or young couples - more mature guests would definitely prefer Superior or above!

This place is just wonderful. Location is superb if you want peace and quiet and yet within walking distance of this lovely city. The staff were great - so helpful in providing things that we needed. The room was beautiful - simple Swedish design but just perfect style and comfort. We had room service breakfast which was good and ate in the restaurant too, which is a romantic and beautifully lit environment. Very easy to get the ferry to Djurgarden (only takes a couple of minutes) and also Slussen for Gamla Stan, but it is a lovely walk to Gamla Stan as well. Can't wait to come back here, it's a special place.

We stayed here for a 2 nights. The area that it is located in is BEAUTIFUL! Fantastic walks around the area. There was modern art work on the grounds which was very interesting to see (we called them the booby monsters!)

The breakfast which was included was gorgeous. Very tasty, although the scrambled eggs was a tad cold, but we did get down late to breakfast.

We had little interaction with the staff, but when we did they were always very pleasant and friendly.

The room we booked was for a double room, but we got two single beds that were pushed together, (with two single duvets) ...not so good for spooning ;)
The room was very clean and modern. Would have liked drawers on both sides of the bed as I ended up with a fridge on my side. The pillows were very soft - a little too soft. Myself and my partner both had two pillows each but because they were soo soft my head sank right through and it was like it was on the mattress! I tried folding the pillows over etc...but not a whole lot of luck!

The bathroom was very nice. It was great to see irish products (by Orla Kiely) for toiletries. The sink was quite flat and had a stone in it. I wasn't a fan of this at all. The water trickled over the side of the stone. but when you are brushing your teeth/ washing your face I felt it was wee bit messy, as a lot seemed to splash on to the floor (maybe it was just me!)
The shower was lovely and very easy to use. The door separating the bathroom and the bedroom was a sliding frosted glass door. It didn't close fully - so it left little to the imagination! The windows were great and big which gave a good bit of beautiful day light into the room.

Great location, dead handy for getting into town. VERY Clean and well - it just makes me love Swedish design more. Very practical (apart from the stone in the sink!) I love getting the dressing gown as well.
