“Nearly Stellar Stockholm Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Old meets new at the Hotel Diplomat in Stockholm. A tiny foyer houses a charming old fashioned gated elevator that holds you and you luggage and not much else. The foyer opens up to a beautiful, modern, restaurant surrounded by floor to ceiling windows and reception desk staffed with friendly faces. Check in was a bit bumpy and resulted in three trips up and down the elevator until the issue was resolved. A TINY room for one provided just enough for a short stay, though could have been difficult for anyone needing a little more space. The location is perfect; right on the water and in the heart of great shopping, sights, theater, etc. The hotel itself had dedicated gallery space with a changing collection as well as areas to lounge and relax. Overall a good value, and perfect for a business traveler.

Great hotel with a lot of character in the building with the old elevator and nice photography on exhibit. Very friendly staff and great food downstairs. Room was small but high ceilings made it feel open with a nice big window and lots of light, even a small deck outside with a narrow view of the water. Only issue was the bed was a single. Luckily I was traveling alone for business but still a small bed is a small bed.

A very friendly and comfortable hotel in the centre of Stockholm. The rooms are clean and comfortable and of a very good standard. This is an ideal location to enjoy Stockholm being on the waterside near the various 'boat' departure points . There are many restaurants and coffee shops within easy walking distance. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
I can recommend the buffet breakfasts!!!

This hotel is full of 'Great Gatsby' style features. Beautiful 1920's style lift, stained glass windows, dark carpets and carved wooden balustrades make your main stairway ascend a journey back in time. Transporting you right back to the colourful times of Dick Tracy. The hotel boasts lovely meeting rooms on the ground and the first floor, also it provides a free access for all guests to their gym and retreat rooms. The only caveat are limited menu in the restaurant (for the hotel of this class I was expecting a menu with a wider choice), and be aware of smaller rooms facing the side of the hotel. It is worth spending that extra cash on a bigger room either higher up or with a lakeside view. Lower floor rooms facing the side of the hotels can be very dark even if it is sunny outside. I stayed in four good hotels in Stockholm thus far and this is by far my favourite.

Very comfortable, amazing position, boutique feel rather than a corporate chain . Good breakfast and the bar at night is quite cool. Love the lift. All the staff were so helpful and polite. Have stayed their twice and the front desk gave me the same room. Would highly recommend staying @ the diplomat for business or pleasure.

Check-in took ages due to problems with the credit card terminals. We had pre-paid rooms, so at some point the staff might have wanted to use their discretion and waive the 200 SKr pre-authorization for 'any extras', but no, they preferred to make us wait for 15 minutes during which they tried to force us into smalltalk. (Come on, you're not really interested in how I am 'today'!) There's only one small lift so be prepared for a wait, and at a rate of £150 a night I would have expected the 'superior room' to be a bit bigger - at least big enough to have space to open a suitcase fully. There's also a constant noise from the air-con, and the 'courtyard view' is that of a wall about five meteres away. Did not try breakfast as there are so many nice cafes nearby (Sturekatten at Riddargatan 4) and across the bridge on Store Nygatan (Kaffeekoppen and Chokladkoppen).
Wish I had checked in (again) at the Esplanade next door which has more atmosphere and a warmer feel all round.

Across from the canal where you can get on a canal cruise. It's a busy street but growing up in NY it made me feel at home, however if you are sensitive to noise you may not be happy.

The old elevator is beautiful and the staircase is equally beautiful. The restaurant is expensive and I did not care for the food.
