I arrived on foot from the railway station and immediately knew that I had chosen the right hotel in a fantastic sea front location. The hotel in an old building has been brought up to date in a simple yet realistic manner, the old lift with gates that have to be pushed back to get in and out is fun but less so when someone on the 6th floor does not close the gate properly and you have to walk upstairs. I booked a single room which with a small single bed was a little too small for my liking but I was on a budget and would definitely return as the room was clean. The hotel restaurant with its out door seating serves great food and has a nice atmosphere and is a great place to sit and watch the local folk pass by. The hotel is walking distance from everywhere and this side of the city is regarded by the locals as the 'posh' end of town. Stockholm is a wonderful city and I will definitely return. The Dipolmat is a great hotel...

Although my waterview room was a little pricey, it was worth the money. It was perfectly clean and provided everything I needed - incredibly comfortable king size bed, l'occitane toiletries, magazines, 2 comfortable armchairs & table and still enough space to walk around the bed. The only thing it lacks is coffee/tea facilities in the room, but you can order it with room service. Location wise, it is on a main road with a nice promenade. I was on the 5th floor and could not hear the traffic. It was 10 minutes walk to the Vasa Museum to the left of the hotel, and 10 minutes walk to the right takes you to the shopping area and another 5 mins to the old town. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes a few blocks away, so you don't have to buy breakfast at the hotel. I used hotels the car service from the airport which was a bit of a treat - the driver was so nice to chat with and kindly pointed out things of interest along the way. The T-Bar restaurant downstairs has delicious food and the friendly staff provide excellent service. It has a great atmosphere and is worth the trip downstairs instead of getting room service.

This hotel has the ideal combination for the business traveller. While it provides all the services one requires on a short trip, it doesn't have the drawbacks of the large business hotels (anonimity, sterile environment) or design hotels (arrogant staff, small rooms). One would almost feel at home! At arrival I was upgraded to a room with a great view. We had lunch twice at the restaurant and both times the quality of the service and the food was very good.. So can't think of anything to complain about! The price is quite steep, but if that is of concern you shouldn't come to Stockholm in the first place......

We had a disappointing experience from the start - we arrived a day late since our flight was cancelled from Bergen to Stockholm. When we got there on Sunday our room was not ready and they actually told us they gave it to another guest but yet they would not refund us for the night that we could not get there due to the flight being cancelled. So they basically took another payment for our hotel and got paid by us and the room was still not ready?! The hotel was located on the main harbour street. Apparently it is a very "posh" hotel - hence the staff was a bit rude and unfriendly but the rooms were nice and we had a view of the courtyard with a side view of the harbour and a nice balcony. They don't provide coffee/tea in the rooms but they have nice occitane products. They also had a small exercise room with one machine and a sauna/hottub that you have to book for use which is nice. I'm not sure I would stay at this hotel again but it was a nice experience for a one time one night visit. Breakfast was not included.

Hotel Diplomat was the second Hotel that we stayed in during our trip to Stockholm. We spent 2 nights here after returning to the city from a few days in the archipelago. The hotel is very centrally located, in the touristic area. It is close to Djurgården and the museums, but a more longish walk/ taxi ride from Gamla Stan and the trendy Södermalm area. It is close to an abundance of restaurants and bars, although Södermalm is probably a better area for dining and nightlife.

Our experience at Hotel Diplomat began in a rather negative light. After driving through confusing Stockholm traffic, we arrived to a halfhearted greeting by the preoccupied staff. Nobody offered to help with our luggage, which was surprising at such an upscale hotel, especially considering the tiny elevator and unavoidable steps you need to haul your luggage over in the hallways. Despite paying extra to book a room with a King size bed through Hotels.com, we found two separate beds when finally dragging our suitcases to our room. We went downstairs to tell the front desk about the mix up, but they told us, sorry, the hotel was fully booked so they cannot give us the room we paid for. Hmmm. This was a little upsetting considering that we were on a pre-baby getaway and separate beds was not exactly our idea of romance. We were very nice when we asked, and even being obviously upset and pregnant didn’t help our case. They didn’t offer anything to make up for this, and blamed the problem on Hotels.com. They said they would push the two beds together. We left to return our rental car and arrived back hours later to find that nothing had changed in our room. My husband went to talk to the front desk again, and this second person was a bit more understanding and offered us free breakfast and immediately sent someone up to push the beds together.

Despite the bumpy start, the hotel does have some redeeming qualities. It is ideally located for sightseeing, the breakfast buffet is very nice, the bartender at the restaurant was quite pleasant and helpful, and the hotel itself is beautiful, with elegant European-style rooms. We loved the high ceilings, and the spacious, graceful décor. Free wifi was nice, and when the front desk wasn’t too busy, they took time to give good restaurant and tourism ideas.

If you really want classic elegance in Stockholm, splurge for Grand Hotel, right near Hotel Diplomat.

We stayed at both Hotel Rival and Hotel Diplomat during our vacation in Stockholm, and for us, Hotel Rival was certainly the favorite. If you prefer more quiet and elegant accommodations closer to Djurgården and the museums, go for Hotel Diplomat or Grand Hotel. If you want a youthful, modern and fun ambiance, choose Rival.

The Diplomat is one of the hotels against which I measure all others. What is it about Stockholm that seems to paint one's experiences with magic?

The hotel itself is far greater than the sum of its parts; a mix of old and new ranging from an old-fashioned gated elevator (one feels very Audrey Hepburn in Charade) at the heart of the hotel to the ruthlessly modern bar just beside the restaurant... just when one thinks one has figured the Diplomat out, something new presents itself.

The hotel's outdoor cafe is a favourite of both locals and visitors, and has not only heat lamps, but cozy woolen blankets to keep away the chilly Swedish air. Rooms are luxurious in their high-quality simplicity, boasting duvets the likes of which can never be found in the U.S., and relaxing Swedish bathrooms with warm lighting and gorgeous glasswork.

Don't be fooled by the staff's friendly demeanor and the hotel entrance's easy accessibility; I'm told by Embassy colleagues that hotel security is both high-tech and utterly discrete. This is one place that knows how to keep the unsavory elements outside, and its guests enveloped in safety and comfort.

A quick word on the breakfast served each morning in the restaurant: if you choose nothing else, you absolutely Must Try The Croissants. I have yet to enjoy their equal anywhere else in the world. Served hot, flaky, and buttery on a level that cannot be described, these croissants are the stuff dreams are made of. The rest of the offerings (breads, meats, cheeses, cereals) are varied and delicious, but trust me - save your calories for the croissants.

I booked it by phone after going to their website as I wanted to make sure that I got 2 rooms adjoining each other. Upon arrival we not only did not get the rooms but the desk person acted as if I was making up the reservation. He checked it out and tried ot pretend I had booked it thru a discount service and therefore the reservation was only advisory. So much for making the direct reservation by phone.

Worse was that one small room was very warm, there was no air conditioning and I was unable to get a good nights sleep the 2 nights I stayed there.

It was probably the worst hotel room I have had in recent memory. It was unfortunate given its great location.
