Just a couple of minutes from Gamla Stan t-bana or 15 minutes walk from the centreal station/city terminalen, the Rica hotel Gamla Stan is a great base for exploring the city. Reception was always friendly and helpful, making some great recommendations for places to eat which wouldn't break the bank. Tea and coffee is available from the cupboard in the lobby in the afternoons.

Breakfast is a good selection of healthy and the not as healthy. Good selection of fruit juices and they offered Gluten free, lactose free and soya alternatives, cereals, pastries, continental cheese & cooked meats and pancakes! definitely one of the better selections I have seen on offer.

Was pleasantly surprised by the size of my room with double bed, and just the right amount of furniture to be able to move comfortable around the room. The bathroom was excellent - just a shower but a decent sized shower. Free wifi, which works throughout the hotel.

Perfect base to explore Gamla Stan, which being in a relatively quiet location - you're more likely to get disturbed by the dustbin lorries in the early morning, so you might want to pack some ear plugs if you don't want to wake up so soon.

It's just one stop to Slussen for Sodermalm or fifteen minutes walk across to Kungsträdgården for the boats and tram hub out to Djurgarden.

This is a perfect spot as a Stockholm base, situated in the heart of the Old Town with access to most of the city's key areas and the Tunnelbana. Lots of character, very clean and one of the best breakfast selections you could ask for. Rooms bit small but would have been surprised re nature of building if it had been otherwise. Highly recommended.

This was my second trip to Stockholm and second stay in Gamla Stan (Old Town). The previous time I thought I'd found my perfect hotel: Sven Vintappare, but I couldn't get a good rate there for this trip so booked Hotel Rica Gamla Stan which was offering a very competitive rate for my travel dates. I won't look anywhere else from now on!

The hotel is literally a block and a half away from the Gamla Stan metro (T-bana) station, on Lilla Nygatan which is one of the main roads in the Old Town. Gamla Stan metro is just one stop from the Stockholm Central Station where you arrive from Arlanda Airport on the Arlanda Express train or by bus.

The hotel's interior is beautifully decorated in a very olde-worlde Swedish style with blue and grey hues in the wallpapers and paint, superbly worn flagstones on the floors and stairs, a quaint old lift which fits 3 people and a suitcase (so much bigger than some old Parisian lifts). There are Persian carpets on the floors and Swedish antique furniture in the lobby and the rooms, giving the place a warm and personal feeling. I had a room on the 3rd floor, with 2 single beds pushed together. The room faced a courtyard at the rear (Room 312). This was fortunate because it was dead quiet during the night. The windows had thick velvet curtains which kept the light out very well; I imagine this would be an advantage during the summer months when it's light most of the night!

The breakfast, which was included in the room rate (of around 1100 SEK or 123 euros a night for a standard double room), was a real spread of breads, pastries, jams, cold meat cuts, cheeses, tomatoes and peppers, fruit, yoghurt, cereals, eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, smoked salmon, pickled herrings, Swedish caviar spread, tea, coffee, fresh fruit juices and fruit smoothies. The hotel does not serve any other meals but the neighbourhood is full of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. They serve complimentary coffee at a big table in the lobby lounge area during the afternoon.

The hotel's staff at reception and in the breakfast room were genuine and helpful. I couldn't recommend this hotel more strongly.

Room Tip: Ask for a room off the street for a quieter night.

Situated in Stockholm's delightful old town, the Rica Gamla Stan is a real treasure and a much-needed change from identikit chain hotels. It's a quirky, charming building with character stone floors and stairs, a tiny and veteran lift and beautiful decor throughout. OK, our room was an odd shape but it was comfortable, not air conditioned to death and was kept clean. The bathroom was fine for for our needs with bath and shower. There wasn't much in the way of storage, though, and there were shared ironing facilities on our floor. Our flat screen TV had enough channels for us but I can imagine some people would be disappointed.

Staff were welcoming although I did feel sorry for the sole breakfast waitress who struggled to keep up with clearing away tables and keeping the buffet stocked. Otherwise breakfast was great with pastries, fruit, breads, meatballs, salmon, juices and so on.

While our bed was very comfortable and gave us excellent sleeps, our room faced the road and we were woken on the first night by revellers and music. This was not a problem for the rest of our stay.

Location was great for the stunning old town and the hotel was just a minute or two from the Gamla Stan metro station, with connections to other parts of the city.

Some other highlights of our stay were the incredible Vasa Museum, Skansen open air museum and the various royal palaces. Overall, a stunning if expensive city and with so much to do you could come back time after time and not repeat an experience.

Room Tip: Ask to be away from the road.

Perfect location in Gamla Stan. I stayed on my own in a single room that was very quaint. Hotel clean, cosy and basic (but in a nice way). I loved the Swedish breakfast each morning and the coffee was great.
