“More a B&B than a hotel”
Reviewed 9 February 2013

Stayed here for 1 night following our stay at the ICEHOTEL, its only redeeming feature is its central location. This is a family run hotel and its clear from the minute you walk in that standards are pretty low, reception and breakfast rooms were basic. Our room No.34 overlooked a central yard which was frequently used by staff from the adjoining properties and combined with almost no sound insulation to our windows, was very distressing when they transfer kitchenware across the yard and slamming doors whilst you're trying to sleep. The hotel has no facilities whatsoever, not even a bar. We spoke to reception, who advised that the hotel was full, although we didn't see that many at breakfast. Our room included a bathroom which had quite obviously been added on, however it resembled a cupboard rather than a classy bathroom. Not a hotel we'd recommend. Recommendation: Try the adjoining Hotel Diplomat as it looked much better quality altogether.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel.

This was our second stay in this charming hotel which has an excellent view across the harbour
and is only a five minute walk from the centre. The handsome 'art nouveau' building forms one of a chain of fine facades along the waterside of Strandvagen. Trams pass along here giving easy access to other parts of town. Important institutions such as the National Gallery of Art are only 10 minutes walk away around the other side of the harbour. The small reception area with friendly staff leads to the curving stairway (there is no lift) opening on the first floor into a spacious lounge. All the rooms are arranged around a central courtyard, so if you follow the corridor round, you come back to where you started. The rooms are traditionally but comfortably furnished.
The breakfast selection is very good, but seating is limited and it may be difficult to sit with your family. Amazing design shops such as Svensk Tenn are a few doors away along Strandvagen
and don't miss the amazing Saluhall indoor food market which is only a few minutes walk away. You can also eat in one of the restaurants there. We would certainly go back to this comfortable hotel

The hotel is in a great location and reception desk (especially the man not the woman) is very helpful but the room I stayed was very small, toilet and shower were in the same tiny place. The room looks dirty and the rug in the room wasn't clean. Food options for breakfast was very limited.

If you're looking for a high-end, contemporary boutique property, Hotel Esplanade is not for you. It's charming in an old-school kind of way: simple (and friendly) reception, small but clean rooms, and art nouveau ambience throughout. I stayed for nearly a week for a conference and found the place agreeable but most likely would not have booked were it not for my hosts' reservation. It's true that the hotel won't live up to some traveler's standards -but for efficient, moderately priced, safe and clean accommodations, it was more than adequate.

Pluses:
*extremely* well located on the Strandvagen, the hotel is within a short walking distance of the Ostermalm food market (go to Lisa Elmqvist for exquisite fish); good shopping (Svenskt Tenn -- a mecca for modern design featuring the textiles of Josef Frank -- is a block away); efficient metro service and beautiful views of the water. If you're a runner, this is a great location!!
*reception was brisk and no-nonsense. They don't fawn over you but they're friendly and helpful, and a nice Dalmation sometimes hangs out underneath the main desk (Also: The gentleman who was up at the crack of dawn to get me to the airport was especially nice).
*It's not your usual, corporate hotel. It's got personality and history. The upstairs lounge, with a view of the water, was beautiful.
Minuses:
*The room was small, but not as small, say, as the average joint you'd spend twice as much as in London. The bathroom, for some, might be prohibitively small (and yes, the shower and the rest of the bathroom was continuous, but it never flooded) but was well maintained.
*The room decor and furnishings might be tired for some but all was clean. Chalk it up to personality
*The breakfast could use more variety in the fruit and vegetable department but at least it tasted like it wasn't industrially produced.

If you can't afford the swanky Hotel Diplomat across the way (Hint: they've got a good restaurant there) the Hotel Esplanade is a fine place to stay. I would not at all protest if I had to stay here again.

I booked a hotel room in Stockholm very late, and got a great deal on Esplanade through Hotels.com. The hotel is simple, furniture and decor is quite old, but it seems clean and cosy in a way. It's also placed VERY central. The breakfast was perfect to my taste. Will stay there again, no doubt.

Room Tip: Ask for a view.

Had a one night stay through booking.com. Very cheap rate for the service and standard of the hotel. Room great size and the bed amazingly comfortable. Bathroom great size. Peaceful and quiet, no noise from inside or outside the hotel. All staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast included which had a great range of food and drinks. General decor I would describe as "classic" a few little sitting rooms around and upstairs lounge room and balcony. Computer/printer free for use if needed.
Just a few negatives;
I could smell cigarette smoke in the corridor as my first impression, although the room did not smell at all.
Quite difficult to find the hotel, only noticed it by chance when I turned around to see how far I had walked. It is located in same courtyard has Hotel Diplomat. So if you keep an eye out for the Diplomat it is much easier to notice along the road. There is a very small sign inside the courtyard for the Esplanade hotel. Although there is a large sign outside but high above eye level and not easy to see.
I would recommend and stay here again.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights after reading reviews on tripadvisor. The rating given on tripadvisor is not high enough. After 2 weeks traveling Scandinavia this was the best hotel we stayed at. The rooms were large, plenty of room for 2 suit cases opened and room to walk about. The bathroom was a good size with bathroom toiletries included. My only complaint was the shower curtain not a screen which was a bit of a problem. Good wi-fi and complimentary. Breakfast was plentiful, meats, cheeses, toast, hot dishes and fruit could not have been better. Located on the wharf there was no noise of a night time and an abundance of restaurants to choose from and all within walking distance. All sights can easily been reached by foot. Excellent!

Room Tip: Ask for a rear room, there was no noise.
