“A Grand Experience”
Reviewed 23 December 2013

We arrived at the famous Grand hotel in Stockholm one day after the Nobel prize ceremony. The hotel was still buzzing with people. It's a beautiful hotel, the rooms are generous, unlike many European hotels and the service was impeccable. Everyone was very nice and accommodating. The breakfast buffet is a must as the spread is impressive and delicious!

This is one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in, delivering luxury in an unpretentious way. My room was extremely comfortable, with a deep bathtub in the bathroom and lots of attention to small details. My morning coffee was always delivered promptly within ten minutes of calling during my six day stay and the phone was always answered quickly when I wanted something else. Jet lag caused me to leave my room only late in the morning, but the cleaning staff always promptly took care of the room.

I couldn't ask for a better location in Stockholm, with Gamla Stan a very short walk away and the Nordic museum about a 15 minute walk away.

This is the hotel where all the Nobel laureates and their guests stay during Nobel week, but the hotel manages to treat all its guests as if they were laureates. The only negative thing I can find to say is that the fitness center has too few machines (three treadmills, for example) for a hotel this size and with the winter climate making outside exercise difficult.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the water rather than an interior courtyard.

We were in Stockholm for a wedding and spent two nights at The Grand. We got one of the less expensive rooms and it was very quiet, spacious, clean, and the bathroom was quite modern.

We only had breakfast one morning, at The Cadier Bar, and the Eggs Benedict were the best I have ever eaten, anywhere. Service at the Cadier was slow, even by Stockholm standards. Lovely view from our table.

First night there, we ordered room service. With jet lag, we were too tired to do anything else. Meal arrived promptly in the time promised and the presentation was lovely. Food was good, too!

The bed was extremely comfortable. The only oddity we noticed was that there were no hand towels --- only Xlarge bath towels and some wash/face cloths. Staff at reception and concierge desks were excellent.
It was a good experience and we would definitely stay there again.

We stayed here for 5 nights at a busy time of the year. Contrary to some of the reviews our room was spacious and very well appointed. The housekeeping ,especially in the evening ,was excellent but the daily cleaning was erratically timed. It was only on the last day that i found the notices to hang on the door to let them know when to clean as they were fixed to the inside of the wardrobe at floor level, not a very obvious place! The last day we were there they didn't come to clean the room until after 2.30 despite our having been out for over 3 hours and almost pushed in to clean. My husband was in the bath and we were getting ready to go out and i asked them to return at 4 when we would both be out but they returned again at 3.30 and were not pleased to be told to wait.

The people at the front desk and all the bell boys were pleasant and helpful but did not always give accurate information. Room service was unable to provide a glass of prosecco and offered only a glass of wine or a large bottle of champagne. For a hotel of this stature I was very surprised at this lack. In the cadier bar they claimed that martinis would be mixed in front of you. This was not done on two occasions. The menu also said you would be served snacks with your drinks but we had to ask for them and then they made a bit of a fuss.

The Grand is grand, but in an English aristocratic way, which means that there is much that is old that could maybe be renewed - some of the chairs and carpets could have done with some refurbishment.

Overall a reasonable experience but I am not sure I would stay there again.

I am lucky to stay here on a regular basis, basically every time I come to Stockholm on an overnight business trip. I get to stay in a lot of nice hotels and I have to say that this remains one of the best ones I know of. Service levels are impeccable, spa is fantastic, the setting is wonderful ... Yes it is pricey (including bar, restaurant and other facilities) and the rooms that havent yet been refurbished are nothing too special - but in my view the overall atmosphere certainly makes up for it.

The Grand Hotel is currently renovating their fourth floor and very loud construction work starts around 6:00 AM. Hammering, drilling and sawing sounds will wake you each morning if you are on the third or fifth floor. I wear hearing aids in both ears and the construction noises woke me very early. Some days were much worse than others. Taking naps to make up for the sleep deprivation is not possible because the noise continues all day.
Unfortunately the hotel was booked solid because it was the week of the Nobel Prize ceremonies. The hotel was full of the Nobel Prize winners and their family and friends. The day of the Nobel Prize ceremony, which lasts into the wee hours of the morning, we were rudely awaked at 6:00 AM and in spite of calls to the front desk pleading with them to stop construction until a more reasonable hour the noise continued unabated.
The staff and manager were apologetic; however, my family is so sleep deprived we will probably skip the dance after the ceremonies because we are so exhausted. The hotel manager promised construction the day after the ceremony will not start until 9:00 AM, unfortunately most of us have early morning flights and have to get up really early anyway. Unfortunately, there was a huge group of us staying at the hotel.
If you normally wake up before 6:00 AM and do not require naps this is a great place to stay. Rooms are nice, service is excellent and the food is exceptionally high quality.

Room Tip: Do not stay on the third or fifth floor, the fourth floor is having a major renovation and inside th...

while we did not stay here, we walked by a few times and even used the facilities once...It LOOKED a little big and dated...I would say older travelers..cruise ship big...I just prefer the more boutique hotel experience...just looked old and tired...pretty though
