Owner description: The Drottingholm Palace is a World Heritage Site because of its beauty and important history. It is comparable to Versailles. Check out the Court Theater and the Chinese Pavilion.

The front entrance of the palace with the lake is quite a picturesque scene. No photography is allowed inside the palace, but that was not a major problem for me. I thought the interior of the castle is average (there are more spectacular ones in Europe). I find the gardens more beautiful than the palace. It is quite a nice stroll. The best way to get there by public transport is to take the T-bana (green line), change at Brommaplan for bus (176/177/301). The bus-stops (both ways) are right outside/opposite the castle. If you visit in autumn/winter, make sure you wrap up warm in the garden!

Our visit was a couple of days after the wedding of the Crown Princess so the castle was still being brought back to normal. The Castle tour was much like the Royal Palace in Stockholm. Despite being a World Heritage site, the palace was devoid of signage, it is a royal residence after all, but the staff were far more helpful than those in Stockholm. A highlight was the tour of the 18thC theatre which is still used today. Because of its age all the sets have to be moved by hand and much of it is done from the area below the stage. I only know of one other in the Czech Republic The gardens are extensive and include a Chinese Pavilion, which had been extensively renovated with Chinese and Japanese artefacts and magnificent screen paintings and silk hangings on the walls. We travelled to the palace by train and bus using our Stockholm Pass.

It's a nice trip there, about an hour by boat, and, once you're there, the large park-like grounds offer a nice walk. The castle itself is below average as castles go, but the pavilion is interesting, and they offered a free guided tour when I was there, which was very helpful in getting the most out of it. You can get a nice photo of yourself and the castle from the walkway as you leave the boat, including a place to put your camera if you're traveling solo.

Drottningholm Palace is definitely worth seeing. The most convenient way to get there is by car and there is a free parking (lots of spots). The Palace itself is impressive. It is also a good example of Swedish history and architecture.

Worthy a visit. Nice place with a fantastic castle and wonderful gardens, especially during fall - so colorful!
