We had read the excellent reviews on this hotel and decided to reserve a room for our 5 day visit to Stockholm.

The "double" room given to us on our arrival was really small - with hardly enough room to move around the bed - plus the toilet/bathroom was so small, that it was impossible to have a shower without completely wetting the tiny bathroom and toilet.

We requested a larger room, and the next morning were moved to a much larger room - really comfortable - with a lovely bathroom/shower/toilet.

The hotel is a 5 minute walk from an underground station - which enabled us to tour the wonderful city of Stockholm easily. We also found that one of the nicest views over the old city area was only a 10 minute walk away from the hotel.

The included breakfast was excellent and the service and tourist advice given to us by the lady in Reception was extremely helpful - enabling us to really enjoy our stay in Stockholm.

We strongly recommend that anyone reserving a room in this hotel should ensure they do not end up with one of the very small rooms that this hotel has. The size of that room is a definite "No No" - for 2 people - despite what some of the other reviewers of this hotel have said. Once cannot enjoy Stockholm, knowing you are coming back to such a tiny room in the evenings.

Room Tip: Remember NOT to reserve a small double room - there is absolutely no place to hang your clothes - or have a decent shower

Although this property is located at the periphery of Stockholm, the nearest subway (T) station takes just 5 minutes walk. The famed Old Town is just 3 stops away. There are plenty of restaurants in the neighborhood, which suit international palate including Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Western and even vegetarian. Hotel staff is friendly and offers solid advice on sightseeing tours. Our superior double room is small compare to hotels of same genre in other European countries. Bathroom is tiny with shower space only and small sink. Closet space is very limited, almost comical. Breakfast is served in basement with adequate varieties.

The key word for hotel service here is "self service". Self service with luggage. Upon arrival we had to haul two suitcases across a rugged cobble stone path from the gate to main building. Same ritual at departure as well. Self-service with towels. House keeping simply folded used towels on the rack, we had to make special request for a fresh set of towels. There is no safe box to keep your valuables, nor minibar.

Overall I don't regret having checked into this hotel. But I have no desire returning.

Room Tip: Short stay with minimal luggage is preferable.

Dear,

Thank you for taking your time to write a review about your stay with us. Feedback from our guests is very important for us.

I am glad to hear your kind words about our location and especially about my wonderful staff.

Regarding the size of our rooms Hotel Hellstens Malmgård is situated in a rebuilt mansion from 1770. It is a remarkable historic building which has been declared a cultural heritage site. Therefore the renovation of this house has been done very carefully. Due to this, the rooms are indeed very different both in size and design. Since all of our rooms are unique we do wish for our guests to let us know if they are not happy with the room, and the staff always do their best to change to another one if possible.

We are a 3 star hotel and do not have a piccolo service. However if asked of the receptionist they are always happy to help our guest with the luggage.

Due to environmental reasons we do not change towels every day, but we always change them when placed on the floor.

There is a safe box and bar in the reception area. Since this is a smaller unique hotel we do not offer the same service in the rooms as many of the chain hotel. That is also part of the personal service we like to provide from the heart of the hotel; our reception.

I do hope that you will consider visiting us again, we would love a second chance to provide you with our best service.

Kind regards,
Per Hellsten

We booked this hotel 'blind' through hotwire as a way of trying to find a cheap hotel room in Stockholm. We ended up with a 'small' double at a rate of £72 per night, which was excellent value, especially given the location, as we were 2 minutes from Zimmersdamn T-bana station, which in turn was 5 mins tops from the Old Town and Central Station.

As stated it was 'small' double, but we found the size to be fine, plenty of space to move around the bed, and adequate storage for our long weekend stay. The room was very airy and light with 2 windows, everything was clean, well presented, and nicely done. The whole hotel had a wonderful quirky atmosphere.

The staff were friendly, there was free coffee and tea on tap, and breakfast buffet (continental style, eggs, bacon, cold meats and cheeses) was varied with lovely fresh bread to chose from. Certainly filled us up in the mornings.

Our only 2 minor quibbles were:

1. We were there 3 nights, and they didn't change our towels once. I don't know if it is part of being environmentally friendly, but what with showering every day and washing hair, we could have done with at least 1 towel change.

2. Room temperature was difficult to control. It was very hot when we arrived, so we had the windows open all night, as it was too stuffy to sleep with them closed, which meant the room suddenly became very cold at around 4am. The following day the temperature dropped outside. Our room was naturarlly quite warm, so we were ok when we initially got in from sight seeing, We went to bed with the windows shut, but it soon became too stuffy again, so we opened them to get some air, and it went from one extreme to the other, as it plunged to freezing cold again! Not sure what could be done to remedy this - perhaps small plug in electric fans made available? I imagine the rooms are very warm in the winter.

Dear Sirs,

Thank you for writing this review about your stay, and thanks for your appreciation of our hotel. I am very happy for constructive feedback since this is the way to be advised on how to improve my hotel and its services.
I am very glad that you liked our hotel and happy to read about how much you enjoyed our location, breakfast, rooms and staff.

I am concerned that you were not happy with the cleaning. Due to environmental reasons we do not change towels every day, but we always change them when placed on the floor.

Regarding the room temperature I am sorry to that it wasn’t to you satisfaction. We have a central heating system that cannot be controlled individually, as air conditioning in the rooms.
Some rooms get warmer than others, depending on how the sun shines. The period when you visited we had very warm days and cold nights, and I could understand that the room could feel a bit stuffy. The property is built in the 1770s and we have adjusted ventilation and structure according to restrictions that apply when the building is a cultural heritage site.

Again, thank you for your kind words. We look forward to welcoming you back many times in the future so that we can provide you with our best service.
Kind Regards,
Per Hellsten

Grand manor house in quiet neighborhood converted to Hotel with feel of B&B. Skylighted lounge room with comfortable couch for relaxing to a good cup of tea or coffee after a day of sightseeing. Lovely breakfast in the arched ceiling former wine cellar. Comfortable though small rooms with those crazy lights that only work when your room key is placed in the slot. Easy 5 minute walk to metro station. Great Irish pub just around the corner with fun friendly wait staff and entertainment. I checked out before the breakfast service started and was delighted that they made a couple of sandwiches for me to take-along. Very thoughtful.

Room Tip: Some rooms are very small so if you are a bit claustrophobic, ask for a larger room.

Dear,
Thank you for your kind words, the comparison with Downton Abbey thrilled both me and my staff!
I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay together with us and that you liked our neighborhood & service, it’s very warming to hear.

I do agree that it’s a good idea to request a larger room and especially not to reserve one of our small double rooms if you are claustrophobic.

I hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to us again in the future if you come to Stockholm.

Kind regards
Per Hellsten

I stayed in this hotel for two nights for business. It is not a business hotel and does not have the facilities of a typical business hotel. This is the reason why I've chosen it: I travel a lot and I wanted to stay in a different location. You have the feeling of being in an old abbey and everything is strange. It's very particular but clean and without noise. The only concern is that the rooms are small expecially the bathroom. But it's fair the price you pay to stay in Stockholm and I suggest it if you want something not boring. Obviously forget minibar or a traditional reception. Very nice the cave where the breakfast is served.
