We stayed at this hotel for two nights as part of a Collette Vacations tour. We found it modern and comfortable with a good breakfast. They also offered a secure room for our luggage when we arrived early.
First Hotel Amaranten is well-located. It was a short walk to city hall and the dock area where we took a cruise to Drottningholm Palace. It is also reasonably close to the historic downtown area of Stockholm.
The nearby Pizzeria Corella (just down the road) had surprisingly good pizza for a very late supper.

I stayed at First Hotel Amaranten with a friend while spending some time exploring Stockholm. We were looking for a 'nice' but not too expensive hotel that is centrally located. Overall we were rather satisfied with our stay, although I would probably not return. Amaranten is one of those 'mass production' hotels that offer a certain level of comfort for a decent price, but without much character. If you are looking for a charming, quiet place, you might want to go elsewhere (although you'll probably end up paying much more, especially if you want to stay close to the city centre). It's a ten minute (comfortable) walk from the train station, from where you are right by the main shopping areas and the 'old town'. If you prefer the subway you find the subway station right next to the hotel, which is very convenient, especially at night.

The hotel was VERY busy to say the least, it was rather overwhelming upon arrival (on a Friday evening). The reception staff was very friendly and helpful, but we ran upon some problems while checking in. We had booked our stay through a popular online booking site, but although we had a booking reference (printed), the hotel was unable to find our reservation in their system, despite the staff's efforts. Apparently, "this happens sometimes". Of course this was rather irritating. Eventually they did find a room for us after all, although we ended up with a double bed instead of two twin beds (not what we had asked for). Also, our room had a backyard view, which was very depressing, to say the least. However, ultimately we might have been bothered by the traffic if our room had been facing the street (based on other travelers' comments below), and after all we did not plan on spending much time in the room during the day.

The room was very clean and modern, as was the bathroom. No complaints! A very comfortable bed. (We were also allowed to view a room on another floor, where the bathroom was significantly older - not exactly what we would have expected). Unfortunately the room was very hot and there was not AC (it was around 20 degrees outside, so by no means hot, so the rooms must simply be badly ventilated). The duvets were definitely not suited for these temperatures, so that we found ourselves somewhat uncomfortable during the night. As we were located on the first floor, we didn't feel that it was safe to have the window open all night, either. The ventilation in the rooms could definitely be improved. I'm sure that this would not be a problem in winter, however.

The breakfast buffet was generous and of good quality (large variety of 'continental breakfast' as well as eggs, etc.). You certainly get your money's worth if you are hungry! As the hotel seemed to be fully booked, the breakfast room was extremely crowded, however, so that one did not exactly experience a quiet breakfast. The buffet was very chaotic due to the large number of guests, I was reminded of a buffet in Vegas... Nonetheless, f you are not to fussy and concerned about 'peace and quiet' you'll probably love it.

We also tried the gym and pool/sauna, and were somewhat disappointed. The gym area was not well ventilated, either, so that it was EXTREMELY hot. We did not last long. By contrast, the pool (very small) was freezing, not very enjoyable (not even after some time in the sauna). Also, the sauna could use a 'face lift'.

Upon check-out we were able to leave our luggage in the hotel's luggage room which was very professionally handled, so that we felt comfortable leaving our belongings there for a few hours. This was much appreciated. The staff was generally very accommodating.

To summarize: Good value for a short stay, and the proximity to the city centre made up for a few 'flaws', at least for us. Personally I prefer smaller and more personal hotels and guest houses, but one usually ends up paying more, at least in a city like Stockholm. If I had been on a romantic get-away, for example, I would probably have been disappointed.

Room Tip: If you don't mind (potential) street noise I would ask for a room facing the street, as the backyard is not exactly charming. At least you'll be guaranteed a quiet night if you do get a backyard 'view'.

The hotel was clean, had a good location and nice breakfast. The gym should have better air conditioning, because it was too hot in there (compared to other gyms). The staff at the bar were really nice.

Good Service. Great breakfast. A small walk from the main train station and city centre, but this is great since its away from the main noise. Underground next to hotel. Room slightly small but big enough for 3 persons. A good deal all in all.

The one positive aspect of this hotel is the quality of service offered by the staff, which is faultless. Unfortunately this is not enough to make up for the other shortcomings of the hotel.

A double bed is not, it seems a double bed, but two singles which have a habit of separating.

The air conditioning is very much hit and miss.

The bathroom, whilst clean, had only a partially working shower.

The room was small, but clean.

The room was not very well sound-proofed and it was easy to hear people moving about in the corridor outside and in other rooms.

The view was somewhat interesting, straight into other hotel bedrooms where the curtains presumably would not draw to cover the window completely. I am sure that other guests would have been somewhat embarrassed if they knew what we were able to see from our room.

However, the worst thing about the hotel was the breakfast experience. The breakfast room could not cope with the number of guests, meaning people were standing around in reception eating. The food bars were best described as chaotic, with scrums for the food most of the time. The arrangement of the food was odd, for example, the jams were with the bacon and scrambled egg, at the opposite end of the breakfast room to the breads!

There seemed to be no rush to replace items that had run out.

Leave your tale for a second and the staff are clearing it ready for another guest.

The overall experience was just awful.

It is extremely difficult to believe that this hotel qualifies as a four star hotel. In my mind, and I have a reasonably wide experience, this was a three star at best
