Langholmen Hotell
Ranked #73 of 154 Hotels in Stockholm

While this hotel is wonderfully themed as a former prison, the service is good and its amenities are all covered, its one and only setback is location.

Indeed, Långholmen Hotell offers a very nice time while you're checked in. Breakfast is very varied and tasty, they have a nice terrace where you can eat it. Rooms are small, tiny, even, but don't let that worry you, even in a double room with bunk beds it is perfectly comfortable (I for once had fun sleeping on the top bunk). Wi-Fi is very good.

Now, regarding location, this hotel is as far from Gamla Stan, Norrmalm, Östermalm and Djurgården as it gets for any hotel hoping to cater to tourists. Far, however is not a bad thing in Stockholm. The Hornstull metro station is indeed a 10 min walk away, and getting to Gamla Stan or Norrmalm is quite easy. Depending on your visit, you might want to get a Stockholm card for unlimited public transport and many museum entrances.

And then there's Långholmen itself, the island is a beautiful city park with its own tiny beach and walking paths. The setting doesn't get any better.

One slight detail are the windows and the black-outs. They are cumbersome at times and don't entirely do what they're meant for. If you *really* need absolute darkness to sleep, keep this in mind.

As others have mentioned, this is a converted prison on Langholmen island in Stockholm. I stayed in the hotel section rather than the hostel. As you'd expect for an ex-cell, the room was very small - for two people it might be awkward, but on my own it was fine. It still looks a lot like a prison and they use that as a feature rather than a drawback. I found the staff quite helpful and there was a nice complimentary apple on the table when I arrived.

I spent 4 nights here and found the hotel handy and pleasant. Comfortable bed, nice clean bathroom, good shower, working wifi etc.

It isn't exactly central, but the nearest t-bana station, Hornstull, is only about 10 minutes walk and the t-bana seemed extremely efficient - I never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a train, and it's only a few stops to the central station and Gamla Stan. Tip - get a Stockholm Card or some other public transport card and make the most of it. Also, try to do the walk to or from Gamla Stan at least once, as there's a path that takes you up high on the Sodermalm side and gives great views of the city.

Langholmen Island had a very holiday feel to it - lots of kids partying on the tiny beaches, people jogging along the leafy tracks. If you like to kayak, there's a hire place just near the bridge.

The only drawback is something which seems to be standard in Sweden - there's no way to cool the room or get fresh air without opening the window, but if you open the window you can't use the blackout shutters so the light makes it hard to sleep.

That's only a minor quibble. Overall this was a unique hotel, near the city, but with a real holiday feel.

Imagine spending a night or two in jail for a crime you never committed. I think the novelty effect made the stay all the more interesting but the tiny room was clean and comfortable.
The hotel is on a small island about a 15 minute walk from the nearest metro station and about 4km from the center of town.
Breakfast was excellent with a large choice of breads, cereals, jams, cheeses, eggs and even caviar!
Two minor problems- the light came in early and the hot water was not very hot.

My friend booked the flights, so it was my job to book the hostel. Hmmm, aeroplane hostel? Nope, it'll be at a noisy airport. Boat hostel? Nope, my friend doesn't do boats. Central hostel? Hmm, could be busy. Ohh, former prison hostel on an island?!!? She loved it! We got a room to ourselves in the wing where the prison museum is (which does mean you could do the prison museum while wearing your pyjamas.... on the other hand, you might want to take something to act as a dressing gown if you want to go to the bathroom while the museum might be open). Small room (c'mon, it's a former cell!), but quite adequate. Comfortable beds and thick curtains, and secure door (key card per person). Thick prison walls meant it was quiet too, couldn't hear our neighbours. Bathrooms were airy and clean, and directly across the corridor, and the ladies ones at least had hair-dryers. Self catering kitchen up 2 flights of stairs was well equipped (cookers, shelves, microwaves, lockable fridges, sinks, pans / bowls / crockery / cutlery, kettles, TV) although the induction hobs were confusing and could do with instructions. Although it was apparently half full when we stayed, it didn't feel busy. It's about 15 minutes walk to the nearest T-bana (metro) at Hornstull, which itself is about 5 stops from Gamla Stan / T-Centralen T-bana. Within Hornstull station there's a Hemkop (sp?) supermarket, which seems to be the nearest, and we shopped there - it seems, from a British point of view, that everything in Sweden is expensive, so we didn't even think of eating out. Although it was usually -5C outside in the daytime (this was March!), the double sets of doors to the hostel, the triple glazing (I think) and the good heating meant you weren't cold inside.

I was really surprised by how luxurious this hostel was actually. It essentially is a renovated prison and it looks amazing. I have a personal interest in prisons across cultures and have visited. Few renovated hotels and this was by far the best. There were many original features, yet had all the comforts needed. The staff weren't over friendly but this could have been a communication barrier. Would defiantly recommend.

A tastefully transformed old prison (based on American 19th century prison designs with a bright open atrium) on an island close to the centre of city in a tranquil park. There is a choice between a more upmarket & expensive hotel and more affordable hostel; we stayed at a cell in the hostel and it was a great experience. Private bathroom, good breakfast, very peaceful. You can easily walk into centre through Norr Mälarstrand (bridge to the north) or the hipster district Södermalm where you can also pick up a metro.

This hotel is situated on a lovely island that is a park and though it is quite and removed from the busy city it is just a few minutes walk to a busling area of Stockholm, Hornstull, all the restaurants, cafe´s, and shopping you could want and it's a short subway trip to Gamla Stan or a lovely coastal walk there along Lake Mäleran with GORGEOUS views of the city. The place was sparse yet comfortable and spotless. the staff was helpful and pleasant. The best part was being able to take lovely morning and evening walks around the island park, views of surrounding Stockholm abound. A friend who lives in the city recommend it to us and now we reccomend it to everyone we know who is headed to Stockholm.
