Langholmen Hotell

We stayed in Langholmen for two nights, whilst attending a wedding at the same hotel. As a converted prison, the hotel certainly has character! Each room is an old cell - we had a double room which seemed to be two cells knocked through, so was more spacious than our friends' room, which was quite a squeeze with a bunk bed.

The hotel is quite no-frills but very clean and tidy with a fair few reminders of its history, and a nice, relaxing place to stay. Situated on a leafy, quiet island, Stockholm city centre is an easy walk over the bridge. The breakfast was good, although we tried lunch which was not a great experience! I think it was just traditional Swedish food though but not really to our taste. The meal at the wedding though was incredible - we discovered reindeer meat is delicious!

The staff are all happy to please, and everyone speaks English perfectly. Don't miss the prison museum situated in the hotel to while away an interesting 20 minutes!

Room Tip: Double rooms have much more space than the cells with bunk beds

Good - quiet location, unique building, breakfast, atmosphere
Bad - lack of info from staff

The hotel is set opposite a beach and is surrounded by small woods and old-fashioned homes with elaborate gardens. It has a very countrysidey feel. It's about a ten minute walk through the park to the T-Bahn.

The building itself is beautiful to look at and has quite good facilities - good breakfasts (also apparently a restaurant, but we didn't use it), a pleasant cafe with lots of outside seating and pretty good wifi in our 2nd floor room. We booked a two-bed room just for us and although small it was actually slightly bigger than we expected, and the bathroom was a good size. All the other guests seemed to be enjoying themselves; one group had all bought the prison uniforms on sale.

The museum was interesting and you can go in it any time of day or night. There was a laundry room for 35k inc powder. There is a key to the bit where you can leave your luggage, so that's more secure than most.

The only downside was that, although the staff were mostly friendly and helpful, they had a tendency to expect you to know everything rather than telling you or at least putting it in an English-language leaflet. We only found out about the after-hours museum entry when I enquired about a laundry room, and we found out from other guests that we could use the upstairs seating area which looked blocked off. One member of staff for some reason told me there was no boat service to the island, and there is. This cost us at least an hour a day in extra travel and made me walk further than necessary on my arthritic legs. Another member of staff told us to just follow the signs outside to find the station; the signs are all in Swedish and the route to the station isn't obvious at all the first time. We also weren't given the key to the left luggage the first time - apparently you have to ask for it. However, one staff member was very friendly and let us print our boarding passes for free.

We were guests in this hotel for 3 nights while visiting Stockholm. The Hotel is a refurbished Jail that houses a Museum about its unusual history. The rooms are renovated Cells with twin bunks, windows that open, and bathrooms. Our room was smallish and we had rather large suitcases but we fit. There are larger rooms with double beds made from 2 cell areas. The grounds are cared for and the 'exercise yard' is made into private sitting areas. It is on its own island with a small bridge over the water and has walking trails.
It houses a fabulous restaurant, the breakfast buffet is full of choices, and the dinner service was exquisite. We ate there on our final night before departure and it was memorable food beautifully presented, the dining room is lined with original artwork full of color and lovely to admire.
The breakfast room is quite full if the rooms are well booked and we encountered a group of small children traveling as a group with their parents, who ran around without guidance/discipline to and from the tables and the water tap that they played with, distracting all in the room.
The tables have clay pottery oil lamps that you may purchase, along with t-shirts and souvenirs.
It was about 3 blocks from the Metro, 15 minute walk. Lovely to 'come back to' in the evening.

Room Tip: 2 bunk Cells are small but comfortable, not if you are over 150 lbs.

I booked a bed in a shared hostel room, and ended up having the entire room to myself both nights. Very clean and tidy with a great breakfast available at a fabulous restaurant attached to the hostel/hotel.

People of all ages stayed here while I did time. Not the most social place I've ever stayed, but aside from the slamming of the heavy doors, it was very quiet during my stay. I found the bed to be quite comfortable.

The location is beautiful, with a beach right out in front of the property, and an active marina/boat club near by that I enjoyed observing. Otherwise, it's not the most convenient as a base for sightseeing in Stockholm - It's a 10-15 minute walk to the metro station. However, after a day of crowds, the quiet walk back onto the island was a nice change.

I'd definitely consider staying here again.

Excellent, tidy, clean cells. Experience the prison with your preferred company.
Pleasant location and preferable for those love calm and quiet location.
It will be a pleasant experience on full moon day to look at the sky form the window of your cell.
Cool breakfast.

Room Tip: Choose the cell facing towards lake side.

I have never thought that I'd stay in a prison hotel before. This hotel's picked by my friends and we stayed there on my birthday!

But the result's quite unexpected, and quite impressive, not far from the city centre as well.

My friends arranged a surprised little party for me and they even asked hotel to buy a cake - Princess, it tasted really nice!

Services are good, rooms are small if you stayed in a bunk bed room but what do you expect for staying in a prison? If you're looking for a bigger room, book a double cell like me then you'd get a double bed with bunk bed! :)
